Anyone else have a petty annoyance like this?

My first name is odd to begin with, and mostly associated with females. This is largely due to that obnoxious girl on "The Facts of Life" back in the 80s. (Boy was that tough being in middle and high school in that time!!) So jump ahead 25 years and now with kids in school, whenever I send an email to a teacher that I haven't had much contact with, I get a response (Dear Mrs. ....)

I know this isn't the worst thing in the world, thus the title of the thread. but how do I respond without being offensive?

As I said above, anyone else have a minor PITA issue like this and wanna vent?

 
Absolutely.  They always assume.  I sign all my letters and emails with MR. and I still get the Mrs. response. 

I have encountered a good 50/50 mix is not a slight edge to males with my name.

Well, if it bothered me that much and I could predict it, I would start emails like this:

Hi Mrs Garrett,

I have not yet met you, but I am Tootie's father, Blair.  I wanted to ask you about....

This would cut if off.

 
I am yet to meet, face to face, another guy with my name. I have talked on the phone, and met women, but never another guy. There are only a couple of athletes, mostly kickers that used to play for MN, but are now out west in Seattle.

 
The bangs. You're like 70, get a regular haircu........oh, not actual Tom Petty annoyances.........nm

ETA: i grew up with a first name of one of the most popular women on TV @ the time (not Lucy). Taking life personally is a net neg, and i had the kind of life i did by realizing that early on, so it's been a long time since i was bothered by it.

Growing up one of my best friends was named Blair so I always associated with being male first.

I have known 3 guys named Blair.  One growing up and two I used to work with.

I have one. My wife really wanted to give the kids hyphenated names. I hated the idea and suggested just adding it to their middle name with no hyphen. I ended up giving in. Anyway, her maiden name is pretty much the same as my first name. So people always call me Mr. (Maiden name) and get really confused when I tell them my first name.

Send the teacher a picture of your junk and ask that she address you as Mr.

I thought of a petty annoyance that probably fits this thread; people who tell you the same story a second time.

The reason this is a petty annoyance is because it almost always happens to me by friendly, talkative people.  The three people that constantly do this are my wife, a good male friend, and a guy at work.  All are friendly social people with large network of friends.  They probably tell the same stories multiple times, and they just forget.  But it drives me nuts.

The worst is my wife (of course) because I talk to her the most.  Sometimes she knows she is doing it, sometimes she doesn't, but I don't know if she knows she's doing it or not.  It happens like this:

Day 1
Her: So today, such and such happened and it was horrible (I'm yada yadaing the 15 minutes it actually takes to tell this).
Me: Wow that's horrible.  I hope it works out.

Day 2
Her: So, yesterday, such and such happened (and she starts going into the escrutiating detail she told yesterday)
Me: (Waiting as long as I can because I know if I interupt her, she's going to bite my head off) I know all this, you just told me yesterday.
Her: I know, but wait until you hear what happened today now (Then she proceeds to give me a 30 second update).
Me: So, if I hadn't stopped you, you would have spent 15 minutes telling me exactly what happened yesterday, and then 1 minute giving me an update?
Her: Yes, I wasn't sure if you were actually listening to me yesterday.
Me: I would listen to you a lot more if you self edited a little more.

OK, so those last parts only happen in my head, but the rest is pretty much my daily life.

Me 94yo ma had/has an extraordinary memory (the long-term part of it is still extant). Because she's not a gushy sort of person, when she tells someone she cares about every detail of a story involving them, it's her way of saying she cares about every little thing about them. So, if you get a story from 1957 and a meal or a day or a long lost acquaintance is involved, you get every detail of that.

Here's what i don't get - Ma has recounted most of her stories, as soon as she's reminded of them, over&over&over to her loved ones, even before she went senile. Why can't a person who remembers what you ate on that Tuesday with Joyce in 1957 remember that she's told you about it forty times?

Similarly, my wife has a knack for knowing what people wore on certain days.  The above will be my standard response to her when she retells me a story.  Thanks for that, and let me know where to send the residual checks (they will be small, but frequent).

Because she's not a gushy sort of person, when she tells someone she cares about every detail of a story involving them, it's her way of saying she cares about every little thing about them. So, if you get a story from 1957 and a meal or a day or a long lost acquaintance is involved, you get every detail of that.

I'm guilty of this way too much. :bag:  there must be a different part of the brain activated for each thing. 

I'll launch into the story because something said reminds me of it... and then from the look on the other person's face I can usually tell I've told it at least one time before and ask. my wife has NO problem shutting me down before I get to that point.

Shouldn't you be used to it by now?  If not, shame on you.  I've got a crappy first name made worse by a mid-90s movie.  I just roll with it.  Save the outrage for things that matter.

Interesting. My parents told me it means Bringer of Lubricant. In the 70's the country had a shortage of motor oil, so if you had some you were worshipped as a god. Many farmers had to scrap their mechanical plows and rely on oxen. My cousin's name is Vôlomir after the mighty ox. Great kid. Not very strong.

I'm fine with the name, I just get annoyed with Mrs. Whatever. I said it was petty. Just like to vent. And I got a huge laugh out of being called 'Tootie.'

Petty annoyance for me? People who aren't walking on moving sidewalks. Acutally, I don't feel it's even petty, "walk" is part of the thing's name, for pete sake, and it's not a ride on Disney Land, folks. Get your ### moving or my roller bag is going to go right over your foot as I huff by indignantly.
