MixTape Draft - 6+ word titles. Finish your draft and listen to mixes! (1 Viewer)

Got through 3 mixes today and started the 4th now.  For some reason I wasn't following Raging Weasel's mix, so I added that now too and will get to that.

@rockaction

I'll be honest, I thought I was going to be in trouble after the first couple songs.  Just not my cup of tea.  Never really liked S&G for whatever reason.  Then Deftones hit and I was more along for the ride, and liked just about everything else.  I was hit or miss with the instrumental songs.  It's something else that I appreciate more than I like, which is ironic coming from the guy that says I barely pay attention to lyrics at first, but I guess there has to be something there for me.  Anyway, just like in the past drafts, I am going to try to list my favorite 3 new songs I got out of the mixes, so...

1.  Modest Mouse - Whenever You Breathe Out, I Breathe In.

I have gotten more and more into Modest Mouse over the last couple years, but when I was looking, I guess it was mainly just 2 of their albums, and hadn't heard this song before.

2.  Dillinger Four - The Great American Going Out of Business Sale

Already mentioned my daughter and I rockin' out to this one.

3.  Mission of Burma - That's How I Escaped My Certain Fate

Like somebody else posted, I really liked the punk stuff on the mix.  I don't know how I know that kidzbop song, but yeah... There were a couple songs on here that I had written down before I went with the short songs, so glad to see them drafted - Deftones, Weezer, The Who.   Good mix!
Seriously, I love that people are listening and giving feedback. Post-rock and punk are not everyone's cup of tea, so I expect hits and misses by both genres. Dillinger Four is one of my favorite bands ever, so I'm glad to see them there. Glad you got to get a kick out of your daughter rocking out to them. Hopefully the studio recording with the children singing was an interesting part of that track. I'm almost through The Dreaded Marco's mix, so I'll be able to leave my own review in a song or so.

eta* The kidzbop song is Taylor Swift. That's how you probably know it. It was ubiquitous a few years ago.

For some reason I thought it was The Biebs when it started.  :bag:

@sn0mm1s mix was next

This one was a very familiar mix, but in a good way.  There was a lot of stuff on here that I had thought of drafting when this started - Primus, U2, The Smiths, and others.  One of the oddest reactions in the mix was the Cheap Trick song.  Evidently I am just used to hearing the live version.  I swore it was a cover when I listened the first time.  As much as I hate musicals, I do love me some Grease, so I "dancing" around a bit while cleaning today when that came on.  My favorite new songs..

1.  Violent Femmes - I Held Her In My Arms

I think I say this every ####### draft - I need to listen to them more.  It seems like every time we do these drafts, some of the songs I love the most are from the Femmes.  Maybe this time will be different and I will start listening to them more...

2.  MC Breed - Ain't No Future in Yo' Frontin'

Loved this one.  Never had heard of this artist before.  It is really buggin' me the the beat/sample sounds familiar but I can't place it.  Sounds Snoop Dogg-ish?

3. Pixies - Bird Dream of the Olympic Mons

I have a very hit or miss relationship with the Pixies, and it's mostly miss.  Seems like a band I would like more, but only like a couple songs.  This was one that I really liked.

The other big surprise for me was that KT Tunstall song.  Not something I would usually dig, but I ended up listening to it a couple times today.

@KarmaPolice

Top 3 songs that I wasn't too familiar with

Buzzcocks- Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't Have)

Sleater-Kinney-  I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone

Neil Young- What Did You Do To My Life?

Thoughts

There's a lot of gritty rock stuff, so the country, blues, soul songs umped out. I'm pretty picky about the punk I like so there were a few tracks here that just weren't my thing. Bonus points for that Cars song. Was there a particular theme I missed?

Best 1-2 punch

The Aretha-Muddy combo is very good, but this playlist storms out of the gate with one of the best Talking Heads songs and follows it up with that awesome Buzzcocks song. So edge to Talking Heads/Buzzcocks.

@dal_boys_phan  was the 3rd one today.

Another one that was very familiar, but it was good to hear some 80s in the middle of the mix that I usually don't listen to.  Loved the start of the mix with the oldies too.  A lot of great short songs that I was eyeing up for my mix like Otis and James Brown.  GB that Cinderella song being drafted too - had a flashback to HS dances there.

1.  Sadler Vaden - Nobody Gives a Damn About Songs Anymore

Probably the surprise of the day.  Not something that I usually gravitate to, but a damn catchy song.  Kinda had a Tom Petty vibe for me.  Liked it enough that I listened to the album this song was from today too.

2.  Grace Potter & The Nocturnals - The Lion The Beast The Beat

Another one that surprised me and I had never heard of before.

3.  Lucero - When Looking for Warren Zevon's Los Angeles

Great song name, great tune.

This mix was an eye opener just because a lot of the stuff that I hadn't heard of was toeing that country line that I am always saying I won't cross, but still enjoyed the tunes.

That damn picture still cracks me up too.  Adam Duritz is putting on some weight there - he is doing a great Kevin Smith impression in that picture.

I just took all songs that had run times of 3mins and under.  So the theme was the title - songs that are overcompensating (long titles for short songs).

Thanks for giving it a listen and for the feedback!

Glad it was enjoyable.

The particular sample is from:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSIb4T5vu9E&feature=youtu.be&t=134

The artist:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohio_Players

Love the Femmes. Their first album is awesome from beginning to end. Literally, not one song I don't like and a number that I love. Their subsequent albums as a whole are hit and miss for me. There are always a couple gems on every album - but the top to bottom genius of the first album never got replicated. Not that that is a bad thing. I can't think of another artist where I like *all* their music on one album and then feel the same way about a later release.

Pixies Trompe Le Monde is an underrated Pixies album. UMass, their awesome cover of Head On, Trompe Le Monde, and Bird Dream are my top songs of the album.

:lmao:

Good info.  So I was way off on that sample (unless Snoop or another artist used a similar sample, and that's why it sounded familiar)

I thought NWA or Eazy-E might have sampled one of their songs but there was so much sampling going on in those early rap years I wouldn't be surprised if several other artists sampled them.

THIS is what I was thinking of.  I googled it, and it showed Funky Worm being sampled in 235 songs.    Couple times by NWA and Cube like you said too.

@JZilla

Top 3 songs that I wasn't too familiar with

Hawkwind- The Psychedlic Warlords (Disappear in Smoke)

Steve Harley-  Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me)

Super Furry Animals - The Man Don't Give a ####

Thoughts

Lots of variety, but it flowed really well. I was really surprised where it went after starting with Judas Priest and a second song with the word Warlords in it  (had me worried). That Hawkwind song was cool and then it got jazzy. Good stuff.

Best 1-2 punch

Lots of good options. The Small Furry Animals song by Pink Floyd song followed by a song by the Super Furry Animals was cute, but that Floyd "song" was something I never want to hear again. So the winner is the great and clever combo a great Beatles song and a song called "Bring Me the Head of Paul McCartney."

Gonna probably get through one in the morning, one at night.

@The Dreaded Marco

I loved this mix. I was going to write an imitation of a real pop culture music review, but I'm not feeling well and will edit in a day or so. I'd never heard The Feelies nor A Sunny Day in Glasgow nor Galaxie 500 and those were my three favorite new tracks. I'm definitely going to check out A Sunny Day In Glasgow, as In Love With Useless was my favorite track on the whole mix.

Damn, Marco, good job.

Apologize for not being around the past few days, on vacation.  Will listen to the mixes on my 13 hour trip home Saturday.

Started with Fogerty and will end with Fogerty, plus heard Centerfield at the Twins spring training game today in Ft. Myers.  Gorgeous day for baseball!

20.11 John Fogerty - The Old Man Down the Road

Bean Cake Mix

For the most part, I was choosing songs and artists that I love but I was also trying keep the playlist as soulful as possible.

The progression of the themes start with love songs, which lead to heartbreak songs (Blues and then some) then end with "the single life" songs. Hopefully it flows well enough.

Enjoy!

Glad you found some new stuff you liked, and thanks for the review.

I plan to listen to every mix but it's going to take me a few weeks--I can't listen much during the work week.  I hope to find at least a few gems that I'm not familiar with on each one.  Thanks to all that drafted. And thanks to KP, Mr. E and NV for their work on the draft.

Thanks KP.  Appreciate you running this thing as well.

When I started setting up the playlist, after song one I realized that I needed a picture.  The avatar pick did not fly, so I found the closest one I could get.  Figured that I may as well stay with the "brand".

Appreciate the comments as well.  That Lucero tune is one of their slower ones - they ride an alt-country/punk line pretty well.  It's from their recent release which is a little more sedated than their "Live In Atlanta" which was my introduction to them.  Even though they are a recent find to me, probably in my Top 5 for favorite artist right now.

Happy that you enjoyed the Sadler Vaden - almost didn't pick it, but wanted to add some unfamiliar stuff to my mix that was probably a too bit heavy on classic tunes.  And loved the title.

Grace Potter is an interesting one - great in concert, hope she stays with the type of stuff she has done with the Nocturnals than her most recent solo effort which was more pop oriented.

Need to sign back up for Spotify Premium so I can listen to these mixes on the commute and give my own feedback...

@sn0mm1s  <---- need an avatar. Maybe Morrissey?

Top 3 songs that I wasn't too familiar with

Cracker- Don't #### Me Up (With Peace and Love)

Violent Femmes-  I Held Her in My Arms

The Specials- Enjoy Yourself (It's Later Than You Think)

Thoughts

Wasn't much here that I was unfamiliar with. It has a solid vibe to it (Grease and MC Breed notwithstanding). I'm not sure I had ever heard that version of "I Want You to Want Me". I guess it's a live version that normally gets all the play? You have made me rethink my somewhat negative stance on Violent Femmes. As for Primus, still don't get it.

Best 1-2 punch

Everybody Wants to Rule the World and Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want. Funny little interplay on the song titles there and both songs are genius.

It grows on you

Not really, I was mostly being cute.  Though I did kind of like the idea of an "intermission" leading into the quiet start of The Man.. 90% sure I've never listened to that whole Roger Waters Ummagumma experiment all the way through until this last week or so.  Somebody had to take it

I hope @Limp Ditka is doing OK.. I'm adding my 20 leftovers to the mix tomorrow, and there are a few things I expected to be gone.. some might think side two is better than side one, a few biggies in there

@Raging weasel

For someone who grew up hating -- and I mean hating -- the limited radio selections and record stores in his small town, classic rock was king. And this is a classic rock mix, for the most part. Completing the syllogism, one would draw the easy conclusion that I wouldn't like it. But on balance, it's very strong and well-done. Classics like "Got To Get You Into My Life" by the Beatles and "Another Brick in The Wall, Pt. 2" are stone cold great songs, no matter the genre. "Don't Come Around Here No More" is a long-time, I-grew-up-on-the '83-'84-version-of-MTV personal favorite of mine. But there are other highlights on this mix. Discoveries like P.J. Harvey "The Whores Hustle and the Hustler's Whore" (my favorite song on the mix) give it diversity, "The Sniper At The Gates Of Heaven" by the Black Angels give it a serpentine feel, much like an FF draft. Monster Magnet is also in fine form, blending -- as they are wont to do -- right in with the classic rock feel of the mix. Ozzy's trademarked tracked vocals dominate "You Can't Kill Rock N' Roll;" a wait-for-it-you-know it's coming guitar solo illuminates "I'd Love To Change The World" by Ten Years After at the 2:15 mark. Nirvana's classic cover of Leadbelly is here, as is Soundgarden. It's a strong, strong mix with very few blips (I'm supposed to like Traffic, but I can't). This really is a sublime draft of the radio-friendly, classic rock genre. Very impressive. I enjoyed it.

My top three:

1) PJ Harvey - The Whore's Hustle and The Hustler's Whore

2) Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night

3) The Beatles - Got To Get You Into My Life

I liked @simey mix for work listening today.  Haven't heard that Marshall Tucker tune in a long time.. very cool.. and the U2 song was perfectly placed, the mix peaked there.  Will crack into another mix now

By the way, I have a relatively simple policy. You review mine, I'm definitely giving yours a try, time permitting.

On the freaking wagon for a while.  :kicksrock:

Enjoy this cluster:

6IX
I started from this one. I'm starting from the bottom, now I'm here.

Anyway, I knew most of these songs fairly well, so my true favourites are probably "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way", "Is She Really Going Out With Him" and "Don't You Worry About A Thing". "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature" was for a long time one of my very favourite classic rock songs but it's gotten a little overplayed round here with the CanCon laws (we'll call this "the Rush effect")

For ones I don't know so well:

Fooled Again (I Didn't Like It) isn't a Tom Petty song I know well, but it's damn good.

In Hell I'll Be in Good Company - was surprised to see these guys are from Regina, Saskatchewan.

That's Just the Way of the World - not so much new to me as one of those songs I've never known the name of.

In any case, this was a good mix and flowed really well   and even though I did know most of the songs, it was a lot I don't necessarily listen to regularly just because of genre/era.

rockaction mix is good drunk listening

funny mine was made with the idea of being good stoned listening, and I'm out of that business right now

simey mix was good pleasant but unintrusive work listening

NV new stuff mix looks like good plane listening for thursday

Meant as a compliment, I am enjoying it   Ah right I get what you're saying though

It's really up and down, pace-wise.. clearly by design..  I don't think I could listen to it at work, but I can't listen to 75% of what I like at work because it's distracting.  slow-fast-slow-fast

Refused and Mission of Burma are high points so far (on MOB now)

No, I know. :) I'm on the wagon for real. It sucks.

Far Out Mix

Went for a psychedelic, protest thing.  Kinda loses its vibe after the Bright Eyes tune, but I like it.
Favourite two new to me songs here are actually the first two on the mix:

Are You Gonna Be There (At the Love In) is a very very good early Rolling Stones song, regardless of who Bonzai/Spotify said sang this

I'm Five Years Ahead of My Time nails the awesome psychedelic song with a ridiculously catchy chorus better than the more recent GBV/Foxygen stuff on here (which is also very good).

All of My Friends are There isn't completely new to me but I probably haven't listened to it in 10 years and that's a bad call by me.

The best not new to me songs on this IMO are "Pints of Guinness Make You Strong" (which I spotlighted the #### out of earlier), plus Neil Young  and The Beatles, who still stand out among a bunch of their contemporaries/peers on this mix. Other than that, Pavement song felt like it was building to a bigger climax than it did. Bright Eyes song is great but not new to me and 1 minute too long (which to be fair, it's 10 minutes long and 9 are great...)
