12.09 - Gabriel Gonzaga

The pickings are getting slim at HW, but I think Gonzaga is really the class of what's left. Besides losing a decision to Brendon Schaub, his other losses read like a best of the HW division card (Werdum, Carwin, Couture, Dos Santos). No shame in losing to any of those guys.

I'm not sure what his deal is lately - seems like he only fights once a year or so, but he's only 33, and has looked good in his last few fights.
Fantastic Pick. He's a level above several HWs picked before him and has been very impressive since coming back to the UFC. A top 10 HW in my book.
Thanks. I've always liked watching him. I'm not sure if he will ever get a title shot, but his fights are usually exciting and he's pretty darn good.

Well, I have my upper weight classes all filled. I am really not a fan of the little guys, but we have to fill out our cards. So, I'm going to pick the hottest 145er ever for this pick. She is not officially retired yet, so she still falls in this weight class. And with a record of 7-1, she's actually a decent fighter.

AhrnCityPahnder can have Cyborg all day. I'll take the girl that Cyborg beat to hang out with my fighters:

Featherweight - Gino Carano
She's pretty damn retired, last fought 4 years ago.

With this pick, all the female fighters worth picking have been selected, IMO.

Well, she was supposed to fight in 2011 but there were some shenanigans going on and the fight was cancelled. So technically she was still fighting then.

Melvin Guilllard - LW

He's been in a bit of a slump lately, but he's in amazing shape and has awesome hands and power. If he can get it back together, he could make another run and start moving back up the ladder. He's always exciting though, and that's what I like in fighters.

Sucks that Greg Jackson wouldn't let him back. He is training with Grudge now in Denver.

He is also facing felony assault charges in New Mexico.

Nice. here we go:

11.10 I can't figure out how why this guy has lasted so long. My guess is he is down on most rankings and off the radar from the Varner fight, but that was a fluke. With him training with Edgar and upgrading his training all around, he is only getting better and better. I figure i could let the LW class go a bit more because it is real deep, but this guy is too tough to pass up. He should be back in the top 8 after his next win, and i don't know if he will slow down since he is beginning to enter his best years. welcome Mr. Edson Barboza

12.1: No doubt this is a reach here, but I am worried he will be grabbed soon and this is a guy i don't want to miss. I actually don't like doing this with no WW or Flyweights yet, but this guy really is going to be champ someday and may be there for a bit. We haven't seen his all around game too much, but he is training with the right guys and has nowhere to go but up. Welcome to the now #1 MMA league in the world, MW contendor Uriah Hall

15.05 Rickson Gracie- Retired

Royce was chosen by the family to represent BJJ in UFC because Rickson was much more physically intimidating. 11-0 as an MMA fighter in pro sanctioned matches. All submission finishes.

I was hoping one of you guys would grab Kimo. Not sure how many are left, but he deserves a home

As a TKD guy back in the day I was definitely considering it. He should def go if Tank Abbott went.

15.06 Josh Thomson, LW

the Punk is the former Strikeforce LW champ and has been one of the best lightweights outside the UFC for years (and will be fighting Nate Diaz on his return to the octagon this year) - very well-rounded guy with good athleticism. He's a little injury-prone, but I like his style and he usually puts on exciting fights.

15.07 Darrell Montague

Only 25, "The Mongoose" is considered the best flyweight outside of the UFC. Given the company's lack of flyweight depth, we should see him there sooner rather than later.

aaargh - good pick, I've had my eye on him all draft long.

he's got some slick standup (plus his nickname is awesome), but I'm a little concerned that his stick and move style might get smothered against the top wrestlers at 125 - we'll have to see if he can stay off his back there. But I totally agree that there's no reason for him not to be in the UFC right now - not sure what Dana's waiting on there.

15.08 Pat Healy, LW

He's on a nice win streak and will make his UFC debut against Jim Miller this month. Straight to the top, baby!

15.09 Douglas "The Phenom" Lima, WW

Only 25 years old and already has 29 career fights. 24 wins, and he finished 21 of those. He's a legit threat everywhere in a fight -- heavy hands, great muay thai and dangerous submissions. He's a lot of fun to watch. I've had my eye on him since he beat Ryan Ford at MFC 26. I think it won't be long until he's getting a phone call from Dana White.

Highlights:

I have to see what i need, but i will go with my first pick as:

15.10 : Daniel Kimura - we can dispute if we need to. I swear they said he was fighting above his weightclass and was coming into the UFC as a flyweight, but he looked real impressive in his UFC debut (and cost me some money too). I'm thinking that he is going to be a flyweight, but he fought his last fight at 135 or possibly 145, so i can pick a new one if need be. i could have swore this guy was a flyweight when i thought of him :sadbanana:

Do you mean Dustin Kimura? If so, he's fought at featherweight most of his career. In his first UFC fight he fought at bantamweight, where he weighed in over the 136 pound limit by 3.5 pounds. Safe to say he's not a flyweight.

arghh, yes. Not sure why i put Daniel, but when i looked up his fight i knew it would be a stretch. Sucks because i had him as my flyweight the whole time

well, this is getting tough. one last LHW i have on my list, so i'll grab:

15.10 Thiago Silva - Guy has looked dominant at times, only reason he isn't talked about more is because of his drug test failures. I can't remember his Lyoto Machida fight off the top of my head, but his only other losses are to Rashad (who he almost beat if he didn't fight like an idiot in the 3rd round), and Gustafason. He is 30, so still in his good years, and only has fought 17 times so he can hang around a bit longer.

i have to see what WWs are gone or grab a flyweight, so i'll do 16.1 in a minute

man, hard coming up with flyweights. most of the guys left are gatekeepers at best, which won't cut it in Mo's FC. So i will go with upside here (at least i have heard that about this guy):

16.1 Azamat Gashimov - fights out of Jackson's MMA which is always a plus. he's 7-2, last loss to Ivan Menjivar. So i got some new blood dropping in weight and will prove himself at UFC on FX 8. Rather have him then a gatekeeper who is hanging around because they need depth at flyweight. Dude is 23, so he has plenty of time to grow too

ETA: i only know about 4 or 5 more flyweights, so the next one could be a bad one

ETA2: :lmao: Just looked and I see Gashimov is 4'8". Would love to see the d-bag who makes fun of him at a bar for being so short only to see Azamat light him up like a Christmas tree. All that said, 4'8" is pretty short. Nice to see that if anybody has a son who is shorter than 5' that there is a good sport for them to get into beside being a jockey

16.02 Bibiano Fernandez, BW

Multiple time Brazilian National, Pan American and World JiuJitsu Gold Medalist. Former DREAM featherweight Champion, cut weight down to 135 and now is the current DREAM Bantamweight Champion. He hit a few speed bumps very early in his career but once he righted the ship he has won 12 of his last 13 fights, including victories over Joe Warren and Joachim Hansen.

lookin beastly man... Anderson isn't going to be afraid of him though like all these TUF guys are. A lot of them are defeated before they even enter the cage.

We're getting close to the end, folks. Might even finish by this weekend.

Did you guys want to have some judges come score/rank our rosters? I think it would be pretty easy to get some mma fans from the UFC thread to judge next week.

Who is going to judge from that thread that isn't already here?

I'd say all of us that drafted should rank them and then do an average of those ranks if we are going to do it that way. Not everyone would have to participate, but why not?

I agree with the stipulation that you have to rank your own team last.

Marlon Moraes - BW

First let me say that I really don't like the little guys. I think they should have kept the WEC going and kept the little dudes there. It is really annoying to me watching them fight. I'm not sure why - maybe I really like to see the big knockout, or at least I like to know there is the potential for a big knockout. Also, watching guys fight that I outweigh by 80 lbs is just a little weird.

Anyway, Moraes isn't in the UFC, but he does have 8 first round finishes, which is rare for the little dudes.

I like this idea. The participants can judge too, but bringing in some judges who aren't directly involved will bring some good insight into analyzing the draft. I'm not if we determined judging criteria yet, do maybe that is next to figure out at some point

I have 100% confidence in Carlton as a judge.

:goodposting:

I think we should let the judge(s) figure out the actual criteria. We should give them the same "instructions" we had and let them determine how to judge it. Otherwise, our personal biases will get in the way.
