8.02 Bas EL GUAPO Rutten -- retired / HOF

28-4-1 Career MMA record, and of those 4 losses only one went unavenged.
Arggh, I totally thought he would keep falling. Definitely a guy i wanted to have, and he would be wonderful for your league in so many ways. great pick.

Really wanted Hunt here. Oh Well. I'll go with a guy who has beaten Hunt before. and Couture. and Big Nog.

7.09 Josh "Warmaster" Barnett, HW

edit: sent PM to mo
hmm, let's go with 6.10 Consta Phillipou and let me think about 7.1 for a bit
Really like this pick here, mo. Progressing well and should continue to climb the ranks.
Yeah, they talk about he how he has worked with Weidman for years with his wrestling and how it is at a real high level. His boxing is quality, and he hasn't taken much damage or shown too many weaknesses in his game thus far. He has been helped by the UFC not rushing him along too fast, but yeah, he builds a nice future for the MFC

Went back and forth on this pick a bunch. I'll take the name here:

8.04 Michael Bisping

Love him or hate him (or love to hate him), Bisping always sells a fight and always comes to fight. I don't see him ever earning a title shot, but I do see the UFC giving him one at some point, as sort of a lifetime achievement thing. This is combined with the fact that Silva is running out of people to fight and has been receptive in the past to a match with Bisping. And honestly, who wouldn't pay to see Bisping get lit up by Anderson?

8.05 - TJ Grant, LW

Since dropping to 155 Grant's gone 4-0 and looks like he's making a serious move to contender. His beard has already been one of the UFC's elite beards for quite a while, so he's got that going for him as well.

nice call here. the guy has looked like he is destined for a title shot in 2 more fights, and his stand-up is looking vastly improved. i believe his next fight is against Grey Maynard which is a great measuring stick for him. If he wins that it is hard to argue he isn't in the top 3-4 of the division

We have a trade.

The EYLive Face-Punchers trade Korean Zombie to the bonesman NickNamers in exchange for a 10th round pick and a swap of 9th round picks.

Wow, that is a little surprising. Korean Zombie is certainly a quality guy to have on your roster, I am guessing the main reason for this is because of the depth of that division? That is why i was really on the fence with Cub Swanson, I like the guy a ton, and think he can be in line for title shot soon and may even have a good chance with a rematch against Aldo if Aldo beats Pettis, so i felt he was too good to pass up. But the Korean Zombie is right there too, an injury is the only thing that held him up from nearly getting a title shot. And on a side note, doing this draft is fun and even a little helpful. For some reason i can't figure out which fighters are in the 135 class and which fighters are in the 145 division. I am guessing it is because both divisions are so young, but it seems to be something that i have had to check a few times to figure out if a guy fights at 135 or 145.

Yeah, and it doesn't help that there's been a lot of movement from 145 fighters down to 135.

Yup, the guy is crazy entertaining, but I reached a bit on him. He's perfect for bones' team though.

8.06 Chad Mendes Featherweight Write up tomorrow.
nice pick, he's a hell of a fighter and ought to be contending again pretty soon, and plus he's just hitting his prime. I think he actually has a better shot than most of the top FWs at dethroning Aldo because of his wrestling/athleticism combo, he just got too careless with his TD attempts last time around.

It wasn't even so much carelessness as Aldo saving himself by the most blatant fence grab I've ever seen without a point deduction. If Chad completes the takedown he at least doesn't get knocked out with a second left in the round and that was at a time when Aldo was really struggling with his weight cuts. But that's the only loss on his record. Chad knows he needs to improve before getting another shot and has been taking his time in doing so, the brass also knows it will be a year or two before they can sell him in a title fight. The thing I am most optimistic about is Duane Ludwig joining Team Alpha Male as their striking coach a few months ago. We have already seen vast improvement in the stand up by one of their fighters and I'm excited to see Chad in his next fight so see how far he has come already.I don't see anyone outwrestling Chad at 145, if he can improve his striking to a high enough level the sky is still the limit for him. He has had some incredibly bad luck lately with guys pulling out of his fights at the very last minute.

Grant doesn't really have any weaknesses to exploit and is a very tough out. Standing he should be able to give Grey more than he can handle. That will be a great fight.

So Bonesman passes up Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza? That's a pretty cool nickname.

I'll take Ronaldo. For some reason I really dig the Brazilians, and I really like watching great jiu-jitsu. This guy is amazing (13 of his 17 wins by submission, and five time world jiu-jitsu champ). He fights Philippou next, which should be an awesome fight. He's going to have to work on his standup if he wants to really make noise, but if he does, he is going to be really dangerous.

interesting, I hadn't heard about that. Mendes is going to have his hands full next fight, though - Elkins is no joke. I think 145 has passed 155 at this point as the deepest division with all the guys moving down.

aw man, I was thinking you guys had forgotten about Jacare - good pick. He looked pretty good striking against Ed Herman - like you said, if he gets that down, he's going to be trouble at MW. Only bad thing for him is that he's already 33 years old, so I think the clock is ticking a little bit on his career.

An idea for judging...

I think we have enough nerds in here that some of us could figure out how to use like a World of MMA 3 text based wrestling simulator to match our guys up in fantasy matchups. We could go as far as booking fights with each other's rosters and having an active "league" if we wanted to. Or we could just match up the active fighters with the other 19 guys that were drafted and see how they would all do matched up with each other.

The most recent update for the simulator was late January, we could wait for the next one or fine tune each other's stats at the end of the draft.

In the late 90's I did this sort of thing with pro-wrestling characters using some time of QBasic based program that I can't remember the name of. We would talk trash all week and book cards. It was called e-wrestling back then. The program would give us a move by move breakdown of each fight and we would insert commentary as needed. I was in high school at the time and it was still super dorky but it was a lot of fun.

For the retired category I think we still need to find an objective judge to score it because there are more aspects then a fighter's actual skill set that need to be taken into consideration.

I like it. The only problem is that I think some people are drafting for different reasons (nicknames, favorite fighters, etc.). Either way, if we judged this thing, someone will disagree, so I think your suggestion is as good as any.

That sounds fun.

Shouldn't Tanner be on spring break this week? Maybe he's drunk and passed out at home. I'll PM him again and give him an hour and 5 min before we skip.

Sorry. Meant to post yesterday.

9.01 Michael McDonald (BW)
Great pick.
I thought about grabbing him, but I am nervous he will be out of the fight game soon. His comments during the Barao fight pretty much put it out there that he doesn't really have the desire to fight much anymore and he wants to do other things with his life. It was some weird interviews he gave, and makes me wonder if he really intends to stick around or notETA: just clicked on the link. Good stuff

whoa, I didn't know that - I've only seen a replay of the fight that cut off before the interviews. Did he say that stuff in the cage or at the PC after?

i'd have to look it up. i think it was in the interviews before the fight, about how he didn't care about the belt, or even if he won or lost. said something about how his fighting didn't matter at all and his life was about his religion. paycheck is important of course so maybe he was just saying things, but im not sure he is fully invested

interesting - I think he'll be a star at 135 if he sticks with it. Maybe he'll get revitalized with Diego Sanchez-style vampire hunter religion and start using the power of Christ to beat dudes up instead.

John Moraga - He trains at MMA Labs in Glendale AZ. I've been going there for about eight months. Gotta pick one homeboy.

9.03 Ricardo Lamas, Featherweight

This is who I should have taken instead of Chan Sung Jung. Ricardo would kick Aldo's ### if he ever got the chance.
