Money Buys Red Sox a Pennant. Will It Buy Them Love? (1 Viewer)

I told you people.. but you didn't listen to old Darth. "oh the idiots are so great". "Cowboy Up". "Manny being Manny", "We're dirtballs". "There's the loveable Caveman patroling Center". "Arryo's album is great", " THE BLOODY SOCK OH MY GOD THE BLOODY SOCK". All you fool fans of other teams were ecstatic that the RedSox embarassed the Evil Empire in 2004. You lapped it up like nickle beer happy hour. But... the worm has turned. Little did you realize you got rid of one monster and replaced with another one. Maybe next time you'll root for the natural order of thing.
The "natural order of things"?????????????????????????Jealousy is not your strong point.Let's let the evil empire embarass themselves. Nice job of treating your manager by the way.
Alot of that's hyperbole, but the root message is true enough; the rest of the league treated them like darlings and didn't realize that they were as bad as the Yanks. As far as Torre goes...I'm waiting to see. If they continue with the status quo and go out and buy a few big name free agents andact as if othing is wrong then it was a mistake to let him go. If they make a committment to a small rebuilding with younger talent and go with a manager they feel is better with yongsters than Torre would have been and it works... then it was the right move.

I don't hate you..........hell, I envy you.
yikes. that's pretty sad.
Hey, I wish my team would buy a championship too  It's only been 100 years
A-Rod is there for the taking. I'd love to see the Cubs make a legit run. 100%
If they hadnt spent so much on Soriano, who isnt a difference maker, they would be the frontrunner for A-Rod. I dont know if the Cubs want to pay Soriano, A-Rod, Ramirez, Zambrano along with what they are paying Lilly and Marquis.

Probable World Series MVP at this point is rookie Jacoby Ellsbury - making the league minimum. Runner up is Pedroia. Another rookie making peanuts. And did you hear about these guys Papelbon, Buchholz, Lester, Masterson, etc?

Should I continue?

In '04, the Boston payroll was much closer to the rest of the league. In the last few years, the revolving door at short (will they be paying the Tigers for Renteria this year?), the Drew & Lugo contracts, and Dice-K have brought them into the NY range. I do find this bothersome on one level but I wonder how avoidable it is. Use Damon as an example, the Yankees were more than willing to "steal" him by paying a couple million per year than other teams may have been willing to spend and/or putting an extra year on the deal. Consider Clemens as another example... There is real inflationary pressure to compete in the AL East.I think it was the right time to move on without Torre. He had a great run but sometimes it is just time for a change. Good point about a younger manager being a better fit with a younger team.

How do you argue that Boston is closer to NY then the rest of the league?Yankees payroll is 44% greater then the Red SoxSox payroll is 24% greater then the MetsYankees - Sox = 64 millionSox - Mets = 28 millionLook at the percentage difference....Yankees:Sox = Sox:TigersAll of this is ignoring Luxury Tax (which makes it a fair bit wider)There is no one that compares to the Yankees. That said, this offseason to be determined, Yankees have money coming off the books. The gap may be narrowed soon where that statement can be accurate. Or the Yankees spend a bunch in the offseason. Time will tell

Yankees - Sox = 64 million

Look at the percentage difference....Yankees:Sox = Sox:Tigers

Thats not what I said... "In '04, the Boston payroll was much closer to the rest of the league. In the last few years, the revolving door at short (will they be paying the Tigers for Renteria this year?), the Drew & Lugo contracts, and Dice-K have brought them into the NY range."

My point being the payrolls were quite different 4 years ago... now, not so much. And yes, that may change as some $ comes off the books. List the payrolls if its handy. I've seen lots of numbers but they don't always agree.

I hope someday the Sox have the highest payroll in all of baseball.

Higher payroll = better team.

I dont get the hatred towards high payroll teams. If they can still make a profit, why shouldn't the spend more? Because Kansas City only sells 2/3 of their home tickets? Or because Pohlad is a cheap-### owner? I have never once begrudged the Yanks for spending more than the Sox. I have always enjoyed the aspect of knowing that they were the team to beat.

Parity sucks.

388 consecutive sell out crowds at fenway park. you know what that means? the team has money to spend. Your team will have money too, go to some games and support them instead of bashing the teams that have support via forums.

I think you've got the equation backwards. An owner needs to spend money first, get talent, and then people will show up. There is a healthy segment of Red Sox fans, like any fanbase, that are not unconditionally supportive of their team.
