16 yo old daughter was dragging by the end of last week; getting stuffed up sinuses and a fever Saturday. She got worse Sunday, and Monday morning she had to brace herself to even swallow her own saliva. Called Dr's office, got in to see nurse practitioner. Tested for strep and flu, both negative.
Blood work showed positive for mono, and to make matters worse, her liver enzymes tested high. She had an ultrasound on her liver and spleen Wednesday morning, it was bad enough to warrant a follow up ultrasound tomorrow morning...doing blood work again, too.
She had mono back in the 6th grade. Week of school off, plenty of rest/fluids, and she was good to go after a week. My questions:
When mono recurs, is it always worse? Do recurrences happen often?
I feel absolutely helpless. All I can do is make her comfortable. I'm flying solo here as the Mrs is out of town until tomorrow. The Mrs feels helpless because she can't do anything either.
