Morency emerges as Pack's No. 1 ball carrier (1 Viewer)

"Morency emerges as Pack's No. 1 ball carrier"

Where did you read that in the story?

LOL It's just mini-camp. I'll wait until August to see who will emerge. I think it will be two to carry the load anyway.

I think that is the way that web site re-packaged the original article ...

The title of the article reads: "Versatile Morency emerges as Pack's No. 1 ball carrier." That may be where he got it from.

from the original SI article used above:Morency also could be benefiting from Jackson's absence this weekend. Jackson was required to attend a promotional event in Los Angeles with several other top draft picks this year.

"It comes with the territory. We all have to fulfill our NFL dues and needs," Morency said of Jackson's situation. "I had to do the same deal, too, (as a third-round draft pick in 2005), so I understand what's going on. I know he wanted to be here, and we can't wait until he gets back."

:banned: Don't shoot the messenger, guys. All he did was post some news. We're all aware that it's May, and Morency being #1 now means very little.

he posted some re-packaged news. If it was the original SI article at first, there would be less confusion. That is where the confusion came from. It said it was written by someone other than SI. The link has been changed ... thankfully.

I find it interesting that in the "Jackson's job to lose" thread, we didn't find a reaction like this... most of the sentiments there were: Morency sucks. Obviously it is Jackson's job for the taken. But now that we see a thread from the opposite point of view everyone is jumping down this guy's throat.

Can't be the fact that it is the "Overvalue Rookies" time of year or anything?

He isn't there, so the headline basically amounts to: "Morency has early lead over Noah Herron in RB race."Good to know, but the more interesting battle will be between Morency and Jackson.

I fail to see why it is obvious that it is not a competition.

If you're a bargin shopper searching for "value"... it looks like Morency is the buy over Jackson. Think of a slower, less skilled, less depended on version of Deuce and Reggie Bush last year.

Say it with me Ray.. K-Mart sucks.

i checked out deshawn wynn's highlight reel and he showed me something. i think this is a wide open race for RB#1 with jackson the obvious choice considering when he was selected.

I look at it this way. We have seen Morency in a limited role and he seems to have very little upside. Guys who creep around like he has don't suddenly become super studs overnight. Has he really flown enough flashes to get anyone excited about this fantasy value?

I think it is boom or bust with Jackson by default from a fantasy perspective. If Morency wins that job then the Pack is in trouble and the running game will be pedestrian at best.

we must have been watching a different guy. To me Morency has tons of upside. He's a duel threat and has solid speed. His only problem last season was putting the ball on the carpet. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he wins the job and puts up solid all around numbers.

OK...let me put my scout hat on.I think Mornecy is your classic "change of pace" back. He has the speed to break one for a TD anytime he touches the ball, but he lacks the toughness to be an every down back. He also doesn't have experience in the Packers zone blocking scheme and I don't believe his running style is suited for it. He isn't a very patient runner and often fails to let his blocks develop in front of him. It is VERY difficult to change a back's style of running because it is something that is instinctive. Once a back starts having to think back there, then they become indecisive and the game speed in the NFL doesn't allow that.

 Didn't the Slack trade Gado for Morency because he better fit the ZBS than Gado did last year?

Morency did not too shabby in with this offense last year spelling Ahman Green also.

96 carries 434 yards 4.5 YPC 2TD 17 catches 118 yards 6.9 YPC

I think Brandon Jackson is going to be better than him but Morency isn't garbage.

The more important question here: Why or why not will the Pack have a strong running game this year ---where both players could do pretty well when they play? It's possible the Pack could be good again on the ground but ...BTW: Morency is as close to garbage as "non-garbage will ever get.

You're right in that Gado was definately not the right fit in that scheme and Morency ran in a different version of the zone scheme in college. So I think the Packers coaching staff thought Morency could pick up their "west coast" version of the zone and be productive, but he is still struggling a bit. Here is an article from back in March with McCarthy commenting on Morency's style of running:--------------------------------------------------

Backfield seeks help from draft

By TOM SILVERSTEIN

Assuming the Packers draft a running back to help replace departed free agent Ahman Green, they better not count on him being the answer. Of those 16, six haven't been able to top the 400-yard mark in a season yet.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy seems to understand the odds, but he isn't ruling out a rookie making a contribution.

"If you go through the history of guys that have played well (as rookies), a lot of it is they were given an opportunity - maybe even before they were ready - and they overcame that," McCarthy said. "Look at the situations they're put into to succeed. I think that's a huge factor."

McCarthy appears more than willing to give returning running back Vernand Morency - one of those 16 first-day draftees - an opportunity to rush for 1,000 yards next season. But his desire is only to be productive and if it takes two or three backs to make it happen, he'll go with that.

Morency, a second-round pick of the Houston Texans in '05 who was traded straight up for Samkon Gado, reported to off-season workouts in peak condition and is taking his status as lead back seriously. But before anyone starts thinking he's ready, Morency has to continue making the adjustment from a lead-draw system to the Packers' zone-blocking scheme.

"The thing about 'Mo' and Green, they're different runners, different style runners," McCarthy said. "With a lead-zone running game, there's a lot more track running and discipline and 'Mo's' probably been better with lead draws and things like that, where he's setting guys up.

"So when you have that, obviously when he gets to the second level, he's as good as guys I've had in years at making guys miss in the open field. So it's just the improvement on the lead-zone footwork and discipline. That's going to come with reps."

And if there's a rookie?

"You could take and give him opportunities of getting the ball in his hand because obviously if you draft him the first day, he's probably a pretty productive player, so you could do that with him," McCarthy said. "But if you go in and say, 'I need this guy to play first, second and third down,' now you're weighing him down a little bit mentally. So that's where you have to find out about the guy (and) what he can handle."

both of those scores came in the same game (against Detroit).... for whatever that's worthEl-Gato's scouting report is pretty accurate... it's also sounds like what a lot of scouts say about Brandon Jackson.

There was a Brandon Jackson >>> Antonio Pittman thread around here pre-draft that was good.

Packers :: RB

Packers Morency Bulks Up To 220 Pounds

Pete Dougherty, Green Bay Press-Gazette - [Full Article]

Green Bay Packers running back Vernand Morency has added approximately 10 pounds of lean muscle mass from last season, increasing his weight to 220 pounds.

Morency will see touches, so will Jackson.

Morency is a better pass protector.

I think this has the makings of a poor Ahman Green being dealt from Seattle cause he fumbled and "wasn't good enough".

Could Morency be the next Ahman Green?

I fail to see why you didn't mock his poor english.Job for the TAKING....not "taken". Boobs.

When you're using sayings get the words right.

People forget how young/green Brandon Jackson is...he'll be part of a committee at best his rookie year.

Trust me, I was the original Brandon Jackson pimp on this board.

This looks like Barlow/Gore in year 1 for Gore while he gets his feet wet.

Famous line from Barlow last year a week or 2 before the draft with some noise that the 49ers could take a RB: "Me and Frank got it covered...."

HA! More like Frank's going to take my job. ha!

I see RBBC this year. Morency is better than he's being made out to be on this board.

Morency may not be all world, but unlike Barlow, Morency actually has talent . . .
