Morris value? (1 Viewer)

There are reports out of CBS.com by insider Freeman that Best has been advised by folks close to him to consider sitting out the rest of the season. If Harrison is injured to the point that it negated a trade then Morris must be the man if Best is out. In that offense where would you put his value? RB 3? or better?

I've gone out and picked up both Morris and Williams to try and cover my bases. With that said I am very concerned that Morris' value will be short lived. It seems Det is pretty emphatic about getting another RB in town, hence their move to Brown. I can definitely see them simply making another move in a week or 2.

Who are they going to make a move to? Williams is a returner and the trade deadline has passed. Morris filled in quite nicely for Best last season. Although he is a year older, I see no change in value from last year.

I'm not sure, there my be some FA's out there they decide to bring in though.

:goodposting: Agreed, Morris did a great job and is the one to grab here.

Stefan Logan is their returner and I expect him to get a few looks in the backfield. Keiland Williams is a power back who has decent pass blocking skills, but is more of a plodderreally difficult to tell. If you have room, grab and hope for the best

I meant to say Logan instead of Williams. However Williams is a better FB. Either way Morris is the pickup here.

Per Schefter's Tweet:
Lions -- who lost out on Ronnie Brown -- worked out free-agent RBs James Davis, Charles Scott, Chauncey Washington, and DeShawn Wynn.

I'm not sure what the "health issue" with Harrison was, but if it's something minor and he comes back soon, you have to give him a shot. He's the best pure runner in the bunch IMO.

His value is high.

For teams that are in desperate need of rbs, he is a godsend.

For teams who are trying to prevent others from making the playoffs and have a free roster spot, he is pretty good too. Like Earnest Graham, he will not be available after next week, so grab him now.

The play here, at least in the immediate future, is going to be Morris. He gets the same love as Earnest Graham in Tampa. Whenever they are called to duty, people start looking at everyone else on the roster and WW. But each time they step and and get the job done. If Best is out for the season then I think Keiland will get more touches as the weeks go on, but Morris will run well and I would rather have him pass blocking that Keiland. Pettigrew and Megatron are the real winners in all of this. But it's just my :2cents:

Linehan: Morris will 'take reins' at tailback

Lions OC Scott Linehand confirmed that Maurice Morris will start at tailback against the Falcons this week.

"The thing I'm excited about whenever you called on Maurice he stepped up to the plate and performed,' Linehan said. "He's ... back to his form of end of last year. ... You know what you're getting with Mo I'm looking forward to seeing him take the reins." Keiland Williams could be worked in as the short-yardage back against a Falcons defense allowing the 17th-most fantasy points to opposing backs. We don't like Morris as any more than a flex option this week.

Was listening to Sirus Fantasy and they were talking about Morris vs Williams and they too are saying William most likely will get lion share of carries over the course of time if Best is out long term. Fran Tarkington was commenting that William is better suited because of his size and age, he kind of compared Williams to a Michael Turner type.

That kind of back just doesn't make sense in this offense to me. I think the bruiser/plodder type is there more for a change of pace and maybe even goalline work.If you look at the last 4 years Morris has managed over 4 yards per carry.

Williams had 39 receptions last year. And averaged 4 ypc. As far as style, he is a good fit in the same way Barber was with the Cowboys when Barber was good.Of course, he is a terrible RB. But so is Morris. Neither has the talent or pedigree to make any definitive statements. Both are getting reps and whoever looks better will get more carries.

Maurice Morris(notes) has played well the last two weeks, averaging 4.9 yards per carry. But Morris, while a much better pass protector, is not nearly as dangerous catching the ball as Best is. That has been an element of the Lions attack that’s been missing the last three weeks.

It will be interesting if the Lions might use recently signed Kevin Smith(notes) for that purpose at some point Sunday. Smith has been out of football since the Lions released him after last season, but he knows the system.

ALLEN PARK — The last time Detroit faced Chicago – a month ago on Monday Night Football – running back Jahvid Best was dynamite for the Lions. He carried the ball just 12 times, but made the most of the opportunity, rushing for 163 yards, including an 88-yard touchdown run.

But the speedster is all but ruled out of Sunday's meeting between the NFC North rivals, which leaves Detroit without the explosiveness in the backfield.

Or does it?

Head coach Jim Schwartz thinks Maurice Morris and Keiland Williams can still provide some pop from behind the line of scrimmage.

"I wouldn't say we don't have explosiveness," said Jim Schwartz. "We haven't had anybody break off an 88-yarder, but we've had guys break off a 30-yarder, and things like that."

Morris, the Lions' well-rounded backup tailback, reeled off a 31-yard run against Atlanta and has averaged 5 yards per carry since spelling Best in Detroit's starting lineup. Williams had an 18-yard run in the Falcons game and has averaged 3.6 yards per carry in the last two games.

"All our guys have a little different skill set; different things that they do well; plays they run differently than others," Schwartz said, "but all our guys have the ability to break long runs.

"Jahvid obviously has more speed than our other backs, but all of them have the ability and all of them have broken long runs for us this year."

I think the Lions have been playing it very safe with their RBs since the departure of Best. They realize that their depth was pretty thin the last few weeks so they didn't lean on Morris or Keiland too heavily in order to preserve them to a certain degree.

Having said that, Morris is certainly a more capable 3 down back and now that they have added some depth with Smith, they can lean a little more on Momo going forward.

Look for this:

Morris 12-15 touches per game

Williams 6-8

Smith 2-4 depending on if he shows anything.

I hate to disappoint the Best owners but as a Lions fan, the tea leaves are saying that he might not return at all this year. I think that even the Lion's brass know that their true contending season will be in 2012 when Leshoure gets back and we add to the offensive line. The front office has done a great job of keeping their vision focused on the long term.

Morris has more value that people are giving him credit for. The Lions are a team that is going to try and make a playoff run whether it be for the division or a Wild Card and Maurice Morris will be in the thick of that. He makes for a decent RB2 or flex play depending upon matchups from here on out. He was solid at the end of last season and I expect him to be so this year too.

To me, he's a guy who's still under the radar and someone you can get for cheap who should be someone you can rely on to put up some points down the stretch.

Seems like his value has really dropped. Is this guy droppable now?
There are a few different ways to view the second half snaps against the Bears. Clearly it was game that got out of hand, and it's a very small sample size, but the two explanations I feel make the most sense are:1. Kevin Smith will be the normal third down back for the forseeable future.2. The game was out of hand and Smith could use the work as almost a preseason game for him.Apparently the Lions are confident in Smith's ability to protect Stafford on pass plays.I'm not convinced Smith will inevitably get the most touches here, assuming Best is out of course. However, it looks pretty clearly that Morris will lose some opportunity. It's hard to see one clear winner among the Detroit running backs.By the time the fantasy playoffs arrive, Best could possibly be back, although to me it seems more likely he gets shut down entirely. Smith probably has the highest ceiling, but a fairly low probability of reaching it. Morris has the highest floor, but seems unlikely to exceed it by much. An emergent goal line back could tilt the scales here, or it could be Williams, just to totally annoy everyone. Plus, it's not clear Detroit will have an abundance of goal-line type plunges in its future.Dropping Morris of course is dependent on what the alternative waiver wire options are, but he seems less likely to be a major positive contributor to fantasy teams this week than he did last week, and last week the odds already were fairly low.

He plays the worst rush defense in the league this week, so I think he's a definite hold. In fact, this week I think he's a start, a good fill-in for guys who have leaned on Foster or Mendy of late.
