Most Improved O-lines? (1 Viewer)

Big Worm

Footballguy
First time caller, long time reader. I'd like to start a discussion on teams that have improved their o-lines the most over the off-season to gain insight on the RBs and QBs that will benefit. Or converserly, if there are any red flags out there, who is at risk? I'll hang up and listen, thanks.

I think the popular answer will be the jets, although maybe that one's a little overhyped -- we'll see.

washington and st louis had injury problems last year, so they should both start off improved.

welcome to Footballguys. I think the Chiefs OLine has to be at the bottom of the league. Tough for LJ. Rookie Branden Albert still is out with injury.

Dolphins OL is much improved. Jake Long will start at LT as a rookie, allowing Vernon Carey to slide back to the right side. They also gave a big contract to OG Justin Smiley, who will take over at Guard. Overall the line should be much improved.

That's one of the benefits of hitting rock bottom.

What's everyone think of Carolina's line? That's one that has been bad (and still has no depth) but they've tried hard to improve.

Titans O-line (D-line too) could be one of the best. Roos has an injury he's working thru but, should be back. Mawae with two very very good fairly young Ts that seem to be coming into their own, Jake Scott and longtime quality backup Amano at the other G. On top of that, they have one of the best OL coaches in the league in Munchak. It's a very tough group

Do you even know who their starting five is without looking it up?
Herbert Taylor, the Chiefs’ new starting left tackle, looks like he might be very good. He reminds me of Derrick Deese, the former 49er and Buc. He’s a bit short for the left tackle spot, but very athletic and knows how to play.
http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/2008/08/tape-time-2/Things change. Last year, the Browns O-line was dogchit. They might have the best line in the leauge right now. You know, change IS possible, at varying levels. The Chiefs O-line looks much improved this year, with only one position -- right guard -- not looking better on paper. And that assumes Adrian Jones performs as bad as John Welbourne, which would be hard to do, and that someone like Herb Taylor, Branden Albert or Barry Richardon doesn't take over during the season.

this time last year you had this to say about the KC OL...."McIntosh > Black

Shields = Welbourn

Terry > Turley"

... and I'd be remiss without this quote...

"People continue to claim that the Chiefs OL will be much worse in 2007 than it was in '06. That's what I am straightening out."

Supposedly they're moving Travelle Wharton from left tackle to one of the guard spots, which is good; he's been their weak link for like 4 years now. I still think they're going to struggle; apparently they're putting Gross at left tackle again. Last time they tried that he really struggled. And their right tackle (Otah) is a rookie so who knows what you're going to get there. I do really like the kid from USC at center.Could be a nice unit but looking at the schedule, they're facing a murder's row of good defensive fronts.

You win some, you lose some, right? McIntosh WAS better than Black, and Terry was marginally better than Turley (they shared the duties at RT and were more or less equally as bad). Shields was not very good at all in his last season, and Welbourne was solid in his play before 2007. As it happened, the post-roids Welbourne was an absolute abortion and far worse than Shields even of 2006.Now, let's look at what I said.Branden Albert > Damion McIntosh. Do you disagree? Brian Waters 2008 > Brian Waters 2007. This is somewhat personal opinion and somewhat based on his supporting cast. For instance, I also like LJ to improve in 2008, while I suspect guys like Patrick Surtain and Donnie Edwards will get worse. Rudy Niswanger > Casey Wiegmann. I'll stand by this as will anyone who watched the Chiefs last year. My concern here is leverage given Niswanger's rare height for the position, but I don't see him being worse than Wiegmann, who was absolutely awful last year.Jones = Welbourbe. Welbourne was freaking disgusting to watch last year. I'm not saying Jones will be any better. He won't be worse. That's fair comment in my book.McIntosh > Terry/Turley. This isn't even debatable. McIntosh is a ##### and a candybone, but when he plays he'll be no worse in the running game (says a lot) and a much better pass-protector. Again, I think you win some and you lose some. I'm sure you've nailed the rise of some Bolts and whiffed on others. I was telling people Jared Allen was one of the best DEs in football this time last year, and no one agreed. Now he's playing on the biggest contract in NFL history for a defensive player.

OL thread, 2 pages

There was a good discussion going in there...also there is a link within that thread to a site that is named Ultimate I think...there was an excellent team by team write up including depth, some adjusted rushing yds, and there were some Aug updates. I have used that site for most of my groundwork and then I also used some of what Chris SMith put up at FBG.

Welcome, always try to use the search feature...still free to start a new thread on the same material, but people might not want to repost everything they already put up.

Enjoy, and again welcome

Parcells/Sparano will get them to stop doing dopey stuff. Just in that, I think there will be a noticable improvement. I'm a big fan of Parcells and think he's terrific at building OLs. I think the Jets OL and Dallas OL were excellent when he left.If he doesn't have a prototypical C, G, or T to fill a spot he gets what he calls a street fighter. I don't know the Fins linemen well enough to know who is a "street fighter" but, I'd bet you will when the season is over.

I fully expect the Dolphins o-line to have gone from putrid to average (not a put-down) by mid-season, which should be enough to support a decent fantasy running game and maybe a modest passing game in that offense. That new regime won't put up with bad line play.
