Most Overrated Cuisine (1 Viewer)

I had a double order orange chicken 2 item combo from Panda Express yesterday and I'll be damned if Chinese cuisine isn't the best in the world. That stuff is like crack.

Holy crap.... a couple of weeks ago I brought home a bucket of chili from Wilson Farm. My wife had never heard of chili before, but after seeing that I liked it so much, she says, "I can make that for you."

Now... my wife is a damned good cook. I'm not slamming her here. Quite the opposite. She put together probably the best chili I've ever had in my whole life. Jeebus Chrise. She used a slow cooker... gave me a little taste around 3:00pm.... "tasty, but not quite spicy enough" I tell her.

Well, she's from Hunan province... known for making very tasty food that's spicy enough to grow hair on your chest....

"I have homemade pepper powder from my home town." she says.

Get the final thing for dinner.... holy cow! Great flavor AND hotter than hell.

No, chili is not overrated.

Chili made by the big franchises may be overrated, however.

Based on several workplace chili cook offs I'm amazed at how bad at chili some people are
I was a judge at a cookoff in Texas, like a dream come true. Like 20 terrific chilis of varying degrees of ingredients, heat, and awesomeness. Then the 21st tasted like somebody made it with decomposed seal meet and diapers. Luckily I just went back to the hottest of the previously tested chilis and got the taste out of my mouth, but I burped it for 48 hours. :X

Ethiopian

I'm not convinced Ethipiopians are actually starving. They just don't want to eat that crappy food.
Ethiopian food is some of the best stuff out there, dammit.

It's very tasty but the lack of texture (or maybe the lack of variety in texture) is kind of a turn-off for me. Nothing crunches or snaps or takes much in the way of chewing. It's just flavorful but mushy stews with non-descript injera bread. There are some cuisines that I could eat just about every day but Ethiopian food isn't one of those.

I'm basing this on a sample of 3-4 places I've been to in SF, not the entire Horn of Africa so don't go hijack my boat to avenge the insult.
We have some good Ethiopian places in LA but I get what you're saying. I like the food but the bread gets to be too much.

German food is pretty disgusting.
I wouldn't go so far as to say it's disgusting, but I find it really bland. I like schnitzel, but spaetzle is blah.
Plus, it's not prevalent, so it can't be overrated. "hey honey, let's hit the German restaurant for dinner tonight"
If it was any good, you would be saying that
I agree, but my point is... there are no German restaurants.
I ate at a German restaurant the day before yesterday. It wasn't very good
I can see over-rated but how you #### up sausage?

The sour tang of the injera and rubbery texture is a turn off.

Plus, the traditional way to eat is to have all your dishes in one giant injera lined plate. You're basically using your hand/injera to grab wet food which eventually turns into a mushy mess that has been in contact with everyone's fingers, and likely some saliva. You want to eat fast, cause no one wants to get stuck eating the communal mess left over.

:yucky:

I like Ethiopian food a lot. I agree that its texture is something that I couldn't have every day. But I'm not Ethiopian, so its not a problem.

I don't find sharing a plate of Ethiopian food any more unsanitary than sharing an order of nachos.

Really good, homemade chili is amazing.
My sister makes very good chili but onpy simmers it an hour and ive been telling her to simmer 3-4

Can chili be all it can be without a long simmer?
IMO, very few stews really develop particularly complex flavors simply by simmering longer. If I really want a flavorful chili, I don't simmer it longer. I just make it a day ahead and reheat from the fridge.

Nachos are dry and you can grab individual chips fairly cleanly. Most of the Ethiopian dishes I've tried are wet. This is more like sharing a bowl of chill with 4 buddies and no spoons.

Sweet mustard

I'm over half German and I hate German food (I've been to Germany). However, I agree that it isn't overrated...everyone thinks it sucks.

But I agree with the OP, Indian food is severely overrated. Just ate at an Indian restaurant yesterday and liked maybe 2 out of the 15 things I tried...and those were basically grilled chicken. Granted it may not have been the best Indian restaurant on the planet, but it was very busy and everyone else seemed to think it was good.

I really want to like Ethiopian food, and I don't mind the messiness of it.

I kind of like eating with the injera, but is it always so bland (the other food mainly, I assume the injera is always bland)? Can any of you metropolitan city slickers verify that I just haven't eaten good Ethiopian food? Or should I just give up?

From my limited experience, Ethiopian food is just bland.

Yeah, it's actually pretty spicy in my experience. And it's in the first sentence of the wikipedia entry.

My "most overrated" is Korean. And not just because I'm getting the watered down version of bulgogi and bibimbap at the local sandwich and salad shop. I've been to Korea and everything. Don't get the appeal at all, have been totally befuddled by its newfound popularity in the US. The liquor is tremendous, though.

Haven't read the thread, but it has to be French.

Just because they invented many aspects of modern cooking like 200 years ago doesn't mean it's worth $500 a plate now.

If you are paying $500 per plate for anything at any restaurant then it is overrated.

The point is, French is the cuisine which typically reaches those heights of cost and why? Most of it is history and hype.

That's why I love L.A., and my part of L.A. in particular. I have a German/Swiss restaurant up the street from me, plus a Burmese spot, Indian place, Himalayan restaurant and Pakistani place within 10 minutes. And yes, they all taste different.
We've got everything covered except good Italian - really tough to find good Italian restaurants in L.A. for some reason.
