Most overrated movie you’ve seen? (1 Viewer)

Only the people in Minnesota didn't like it and it's because the movie went over the top with the accent and sayings.
I love Fargo. I grew up across the Red River from Fargo.

I love that the only thing Fargo has to do with the movie Fargo is that Jerry met Gaear and Carl in a bar there. I suppose he traveled through there when he tried to escape through Bismarck. I'm guessing he was headed either for Minot or Williston.

Saw Arrival on Hulu last week. I enjoyed it but also found it didn’t live up to the hype. I was very dissapointed with the ending and it reminded me of the disappointment of the movie Contact.

Maybe, but if you didn't grow up with them, I don't think they are that funny if you see them for the first time now.
the physics of comedy is surprise. the problem with hit comedies is that they become templates for comic styles. watching classic comedies decades on, therefore, is watching comedy without surprise. no surprise it don't hit with some folk.

ETA: The key to most hit comedies is that they usually have high likeability factors, which is why people can enjoy them without the comic style being new to them

I agree it's tough with older movies. It's sometimes hard to separate the story with the technology.

Citizen Kane is an old movie that's often been considered a classic, but I think it's complete trash. Hard to know if that's just my modern bias. But then I see Casablanca, which came out only a year later, and I consider it to be all time great.
Casablanca is just a miracle. Pretty much every line in it would be cool if you said it today and that's almost impossible 75 years on.

Kane is all about the moviemaking, about unlocking the power movies have to make things bigger than real. Folks were largely trying to capture life on film til then. Welles used light & perspective & bombast to add scale to human endeavour. More an achievement than an entertainment and, though i find it to work on both levels, i totally understand how it could be tedious to some.

Maybe it's part of being a Boomer, but i doubt i'll ever understand the perspective upon perspective of the generations on either side of me. Gimme Buxtehude, Giotto, Moliere, Mozart, Stephen Foster, Ibsen, vaudeville, Picasso, Dixieland, Nosferatu, Duchamp, swing, Beckett, Hank, O'Keefe, Berry, Beatles, Ferlinghetti, Lucy, Elvises Presley to Costello, MCs Biggie to Li'ls, Andrews Sisters to Avett Brothers. I want to understand each & every frikkin one of them IN CONTEXT to their times & mine. nufced

Dunkirk....WTF..?

.....15...25....35 Minutes.....i’m Out.!!

What a bunch of crap....Christopher Nolan....Blah Blah Blah..

30 minutes in I was begging to be strafed by the Luftwaffe.

Zero plot...crappy characters....I could of written a better script on my toilet..

Pretentious film making at its best.

that was JimmieB from NYC ...comin' in hard.  call back anytime JimmieB.

This thread is inspired by the “ worst movie you’ve ever seen” thread.

The big Lebowski is by far the most overrated film I can think of. I’m a huge coen brothers fan and I’ve seen Lebowski 5 or 6 times and I just don’t see why it’s so revered. I think it’s one of their weakest films.
Adding you to my ignore list

Ibsen & Beckett; from Enemy of the People to Dante & the Lobster... :grad:  &

I always found "The Princess Bride" overrated.  It has about 5-6 funny lines and the sword fight scene was pretty good, but I never really got why it's considered a cult classic (and the 5-6 funny lines get quoted all the time; I'm probably setting myself up for an "Inconceivable!" reply).

Characters are all pretty uninteresting.  They never really address that the "good guy" is some awful pirate who has been away murdering people.  Buttercup seems kind of high maintenance and needy, and not really spousal material. 90% of the writer's intended jokes fall flat, and the writing is also kind of hacky, with characters doing things that no rational person would do, or knowing things that they have no way of knowing.

I know a lot of people love it though.

oh, and #### Billy Crystal.

There's a handful of movies I remember being blown away seeing in the theater. This was one of them.
My girlfriend at the time and I went to see it at a local theater with no knowledge at all what it was even about (guess we just wanted to see a movie) - same experience.

Inception
i really wanted to love this flick because i reallyreally   Ellen Page, and i think Nolan is a very innovative cat ... but it fell short - i didn't dislike it, per se - but i can dig folks deeming it unworthy of it's (mostly) lofty praise.

PS- did i mention how much i love Ms. Page?

Me as well, went in a slightly altered state of mind with no clue what the movie was about. Anthony Hopkins completely freaked me out, genius level acting there.

I waited too long to see it and it was all hyped up. Really respect Nolan for being different and the scale of his movies, just didn't love this one.

Not to mention that the history books totally spoiled the ending.

For me, almost all the superhero movies. Iron Man, Batman, Wolverine, Superman Xmen, etc.... They have like 1000 decibel scores and previews promising all dark and tense and edgy. Watching them you know exactly what is going to happen with little depth or creativity. I try to go for the 'entertainment value' but I don't get it.

People actually clamor for Logan as Best Picture. Really? Saw it. Didn't do anything for me.

I enjoyed Lego Batman though.

Did you see it early, or a few years later?

It's not great, but it blew me away visually... now everybody copied it and the one amazing thing about it is commonplace.

Early. Braveheart is my favorite movie so that’s my measuring stick. To me, 300 was trying to be like Braveheart but just missed in so many ways.
