Most painful loss ever? (1 Viewer)

Vikes losing to Falcons in the NFC championship on a Gary Anderson missed FG hurt quite a bit.
Anderson's missed field goal isn't what hurt.....it was Denny Green ordering Culpepper to basically run out the clock with over a minute to play and wait for overtime because "the Falcons had the momentum" (never you mind that the 1998 Vikings had the most explosive offensive in NFL history until the 2007 Patriots). THAT is something that has left a deep and painful scar on the minds and hearts of so many of us Vikings fans. :horns:
CunninghamWont get over the loss til we win a SuperBowl, atleast we are no longer the best regular season team to not win the superbowl.

The loss itself is not the killer - it's just the reality that the pats were no the verge of beyond immortality. Sure, they can come back and win a Super Bowl, or 2 or 3. But they will not (in all likelihood) be UNDEFEATED. They had a chance not just to be a champion (again), but to be in such rarified air and that dream is lost.

Lost not just for this year, but likely forever. Can't ever recapture this.

The Chargers' loss last year to the Pats in the 2nd round was the most painful loss I've ever experienced. Worse than the holy roller.

Bills loss to the Giants was more painful. Pats have won many Super Bowls of recent times, which softens the blow a fair bit
I think that Bills loss got more and more painful after the other Bills superbowl losses because it became very apparent that was the closest they would ever be to being Superbowl Champions.
 Actually, it grows more painful every year.

The most painful loss EVER is the Colts to the Jets

AFL vs. NFL

The "Guarantee"

Changed the entire NFL's history...

An undefeated season pales in comparison IMO

In the scheme of losses as a NE fan this hurts, but not significantly worse than last year and less than the 1986 Red Sox world series. I think most losses in championship games are hard, especially if your team is the favorite or has the game in hand. One think that takes the sting off a bit is that the Giants just played great, both on Defense and on O when it mattered most. You can point to a number of plays NE could have made, but the Giants played very well and you have to give them credit.
Good points, but you're thinking of yourself. You think Junior Seau and Randy Moss share your viewpoint? You have to look at just this game and what it meant to NFL history.I can't think of a bigger impact on a loss. I'm glad that Patriot fans aren't super upset as I don't like anyone to feel bad but whether Pats fans are down or not, that doesn't diminish how big of a loss this is.
Its a big loss mainly for Seau given he's probably done. Bruschi has 3 rings and was on only the 2nd team to go undefeated in the regular season. The Yankees ALCS loss was huge. The Bill losing 4 SB in a row was huge...esp the last one.for the majority of the team it will hurt far worse than a normal SB loss but it is offset by the fact that they are a lock to make the playoffs next year and a fav to get back to the SB. Hell its not even out of the realm of possibility that they could make a run at going undefeated again given they have the weakest schedule of all 32 teams.

I'm actually amazed at how bad I don't feel about Sunday's outcome. The loss to the Colts in last year's AFCCG, giving up the 21-3 lead, not converting the 3rd-and-4 that would have sent the Pats to SB41 and then giving up the ensuing game winning TD drive felt much worse two days later (and several more). I'm surprisingly not all that upset at missing out on history, both from a Montana/Bradshaw-matching 4 SBs for Tom Brady and the 19-0 season.

Maybe it has to do with age. When I was 16, watching the ball go through Buckner's legs crushed me. I'm not that kid anymore. Maybe it has to do with recent success. Despite the missed chance at history, I'm sure every other team's fans would cherish the opportunity to root for a 4th SB in a decade. Now I'm supposed to cry in my beer because they didn't get it? Kinda lame. Especially considering that they won SB36, a game most considered they had no business winning much like what people thought of the Giants in SB42. So they've been on both sides of huge upsets. I guess it evens out. :P

Believe me when I say that for us Steeler fans there was nothing more gut wrenching than to watch Dallas gather the Lombardi in '95 when the Steelers beat up on the Cowboys all game, holding Emmitt to 48 yards was unheard of that year, too bad O'donnell wasn't on the same page as the rest of the team that night otherwise it would be 6 SB trophies for Pitt right now...

For Patriots fans, this loss has to sting more than it would have had they not been going for a perfect season. I can not imagine a more painful loss than this, other than maybe a team losing their 16th game in a season...As a Dolphins fan and Patriots hater, I would not have scripted it any othe rway...this was truly a perfect season. Thanks Giants!!!
