Most Underrated Player (1 Viewer)

REDSKINS:On offense: OT Jon Jansen. He is quite possibly the best RT in the league, but never gets any credit come Pro Bowl time, since only LTs get the spotlight over the course of a season. On defense: DT Joe Salava'e. He is a monster in the midde, and constantly gets his big paws up to bat down passes. He has been instrumental in batting balls that have been picked off by the secondary. Especially over the last 3 weeks.

Russ Hochstein. All the guy does is whatever's asked of him, whenever. And does it well.Runners up: Troy Brown, Mike Vrabel.

Steelers- Roethlisberger

2nd year QBs aren't supposed to be this good.
I almost said Big Ben, but with the exposure he gets anyway, I wanted to shine the spotlight on a more unheralded player.

Steelers - Aaron Smith. A very underrated DE.I was going to say Jeff "Skippy" Reed because the guy really is a good field goal kicker. Unfortunately his kickoffs stink.

Most Underrated PlayerPete Kendall. The guy was so steady last year next to Mawae and then came in and was better than average at center by the end of the season. There were a series of terrible snaps in the first two games though. :o

Seahawks: Mack Strong, FB.Lead blocker who paves the way for all those yards for the RB's for the last decade - the main reason the Seahawks have been so successful running the ball over tha span, since he predates Walter Jones. Used to be the best player in the NFL who had never made a Pro Bowl - going this year. Good pass catcher. Best name for a fullback ever.I seriously doubt any Seahawks fans will pick anyone else.

Before this season C Jeff Saturday was the easy answer. But, since he was named to the AP All-Pro team this season, I can't say him now. I'm going to say MLB Gary Brackett. A part of the reason for the improvement of the Colts D is that he replaced Rob Morris and it has made a big difference. Runner-up: DE/DT Raheem Brock - he plays multiple roles and allows DE Robert Mathis to be a pass-rushing specialist.

Giants - Offense: OL Dave Diehl. Has swapped back and forth between Guard and Tackle without missing a beat. Has started since his rookie year. Defense: LB Antonio Pierce. He's starting to get recognition but more than anyone else, he's the reason the Giants run D improved this year. Oustide of Urlacher, he's the best MLB in the NFC.

Curse you Red McCombs and your staying $22 million under the cap! :shakesfist:

Agreed on Pierce. He was fantastic before he got hurt.

Green Bay - Offense, sheesh. Uh. I guess Anotnio Chatman. I'm not a big fan of the guy, but he's improved as a WR.Defense-Aaron Kampan, no question. Plays hard, brings it every week, and has improved every year in the league. Pay the man.

How can he be underrated if he made the Pro Bowl this year? If you are recognized as one of the two best FBs in the game, I find it hard to justify that he is still underrated.I picked JJ and Rocky

Jake Plummer. Everyone thinks he's still the same Jake that Arizona had. He is a huge reason that the Broncos were 13-3 this year. He still gets little respect nationally. Maybe that will come if he can find a way to beat the Pats.Honorable mention to Keith Burns. He is the heart and soul of a very solid special teams unit.

I guess that's a point, but he's been so underrated for so long, I think he's the right answer - and I'm still not sure that many people know who he is. I like Bernard a lot but it's kind of tough to determine what his proper rating is yet. I'd like to see another season before saying this guy is a great DT.

JJ is rated about right, a solid WR who's a #2 or #3 on a good team.

If I was going to go another direction, I might go with another O-lineman.

New York Jets - WR Jerricho CotcheryNobody knows about this dude cuz' the Jets burried him at #4 on the depth chart behind Chrebet. He broke virtually all of Torry Holt's records at NC State and you will have a hard time to find a more sure-handed WR in the NFL. Cotchery drops NOTHING.HTH.

HTH.
With Chrebet out of the way, his opportunity begins in '06. We'll see. Only 19 catches in 16 games (1 start) is tough to call him underrated. Unrated I believe.Did have a nice ST return for a TD

San Francisco 49ers: Bryant Young- Even at his age, he still plays at a high level and is a motivator and a leader. Not surprisingly, this was a lot tougher to decide than most overrated player. However, I would also say that at some point during the season the said could have been said about Derek Smith, Shawntae Spencer, and to a lesser degreee Tony Parrish.

I thought about Kendall as well, but I just couldn't give a nod to any offensive player this year.My vote would go to Ben Graham.

Very :goodposting: You beat me to it, Trap, on all 4.

Cowboys:Terence Newman. The only time opposing teams got anything off him this past year is when he released the receivers to the safeties (supposedly) behind him. No one got anything off him when Dallas went man this year. He was as close to a "Shut Down Corner" this past year as anyone has been in several years. But does he get any pro bowl consideration? Nope. National media attention? Only Dr. Z seems to have figured out he's pretty good. Underrated? Absolutely.

Cant say Briggs anymore since hes goin to the pro bowlIll go with DT Ian Scott. Plays on 1st and 2nd down/obvious running downs and is the primary run stuffer on the line

Broncos-Hmmm... tough one. Jake Plummer and Al Wilson would have made the list, but Plummer's in the pro bowl and Wilson is an all-pro, which sort of precludes being "underrated"... even though a lot of people don't understand that Plummer is a "pro bowl" QB, and it's silly that he makes it as an alternate and doesn't get an asterisk.Regardless, I voted Tom Nalen. The guy just had the best season of his hall-of-fame career, and didn't even make the pro bowl. Matt Lepsis is another big one. He's been a common denominator with every single Denver 1,000 yard rusher. Dr. Z called him the best tackle in the entire league this year (ahead of Walter Jones). He's never been to a single pro-bowl. Underrated. On defense, Gerard Warren. No one has a higher ratio of double teams to words typed about him. Most of the time he doesn't even get his name mentioned, he's just part of those Cleveland Browncos.

True enough, but he is at least respected by most. I vote for Terry Glenn. Man, Parcells killed his reputation with the "She" bit. He finished ten yards behind Harrison and tied with Boldin for TDs, and he had Drew Bledsoe for a QB.

Does Chris Chambers still rank as underrated now that he's been voted to a Pro Bowl?
He can be. But, for example, a player that was voted 1st team All-Pro probably can't be considered underrated.

The Vikings punter. He is so under the radar that I forgot his name. Great season for a walk on F/A punter.

Does Chris Chambers still rank as underrated now that he's been voted to a Pro Bowl?
No, he ranks as inconsistant.I would vote for Traylor off the dolphins. He just had one hell of a season, and like all big-bodied DTs, he gets no recognition for it. He may never put up any stats, but I didn't see anyone on that defense who so regularly altered plays.

I think B. Westbrook is underrated. He is not your typical RB in a good way and therefore I don't think he gets enough credit for how much he changes and impacts the game. Westbrook was the MAIN reason that Philly was in the SB last season and is the most important puzzle piece on that team, yet he was playing second fiddle to Donovan and Owens for the last year and a half. The real football fans know his importance but the average football fan does not truly know how great he actually is.

No, he ranks as inconsistant.
I disagree that he is inconsistent - he has had inconsistent quarterback play, but every game I saw this year, when the ball was within his grasp, he got it.If the ball aint placed properly, there aint a receiver in the league that can have consistent performance.

When Frerrotte was on target, Chambers was consistent.

That said, he seemed to consistently run his routes well (that I saw) and was fairly consistently open and, pretty much, uncoverable this past year - and he did everything asked of him (downfield blocking was an especially improved area for him).

Oakland:3rd string QB Andrew Walter ® - Looked pretty sharp in his rookie pre-season games. Very tight spiral balls seemingly always on target. As he gets more and more reps, and becomes more familiar with the playbook, he could very well leapfrog Tuiasosopo to become the starter.

You must have missed week 1, then.Wes Welker and Chris Chambers both had the same QBs throwing to them all season. Welker caught 56% of the balls thrown his way. Chris Chambers caught 49% of the balls thrown his way.

If you're a fan of DVOA, Welker finished 20th in the league in DVOA, Booker finished 49th, and Chambers finished 72nd, right between Arnaz Battle and Jabar Gaffney.

Don't tell me it was a function of tougher coverage, either. Running down the list of DVOA, the only teams whose #2 WR finished with a higher DPAR than the #1 WR (excluding Seattle, which was a mess because of injuries, and Chicago/Atlanta because I have no idea who their #1s are) were Jacksonville (Wilford finished 22nd, J.Smith was 23rd), New Orleans (but Horn was injured all season), NYG, and Miami (whose #2 AND #3 beat out Chambers!). All #1s face tougher coverage than the #2s, and at least 25 #1s still had more value than the #2s.

Totally agree with this. I think he had an okay rookie season, a pretty rough year last year, and people sort of forgot about him. But this season, with a decent (not great) corner opposite him, he really blossomed.I honestly can't think of anybody else on the Cowboys that is underrated. . . Canty, maybe??

I wouldn't call it tougher coverage, but a ball "thrown his way" as a target does not equal a ball that was catchable.I watched that entire first game - Chambers had THREE passes go his way in the end zone that were just enough off target that Chambers had to make an amazing play just to get a touch on the ball.

Meanwhile, Welker was the underneath guy who was wide open a LOT in the 4th q. when the Broncos were looking for the turnover/stop and the Dolphins were not going downfield anymore. Randy McMichael was HUGE in the 4th Q of that game due to that factor.

I did the FBGuy game recap for that game, so I am intimately familiar with how

that game went.

My write up on Chambers:

Chambers is the prime weapon in this year’s Miami Dolphin offense – especially with QB Frerotte’s strength being good touch on the downfield pass. Chambers seemed a step faster than almost all other players on the field as he was often behind the Broncos’ defenders during his routes. Though he caught only five of his 15 targets, there were several passes that were barely misses, including what was an absolutely beautiful effort at a touchdown pass. Chambers made the diving catch, but landed just out of bounds – had Frerotte put the pass an inch or two closer, it would have been a touchdown. Chambers was also the main target inside the 20 – sometimes on consecutive red zone passes - but Frerotte was unable to get him the ball.

Glenn.Parcells, too, now that this whole "what has he done without Belichick" nonsense has sprouted up.

I think that William Henderson is, and has been for years, the most underrated player in GreenBay. Sure, he's been to the pro bowl, but the FB position in general is far and away the least glamorous "skill position" in football. Henderson is a great blocker, has great hands and still plays special teams. I think they will miss miss tremendously when he's gone.

Bears -WR Bernard Berrian. Injured earlier in the year, but this guy has speed and good hands. Give him consistency and talent at QB, and watch out (IMO).

C'mon, you have to think of William Henderson when thinking underrated on the Packers.Kampman i agree with.
