Mount Rushmore Comedies (1 Viewer)

You Me and Dupree has gotta be schtick. Don't even think that would make my Top 500 comedy list.

Mine:

Caddyshack
Animal House
Office Space
Old School

Top two choices were to obvious for me. Had to really think about the last two. Both were major watches for me in my late teens and twenties. Oddly, haven’t watched or thought about them in awhile but they were so big for me they I eventually opted for them. Other considerations:

The Big Lebowski - I don’t really consider this a comedy. If it’s a comedy then it’s probably ahead of Old School for me.

Role Models - I think this is the most underrated comedy of all time. Love it.

Superbad - probably just one notch behind old school and office space for me but it’s right there with them.

American Pie - I recognize this isn’t the greatest movie, but my roommate and I watched it nearly every night (he introduced me to the concept of a “sleepy time” movie) so there’s a lot of sentiment attached to it for me.

Office Space is another great one I forgot to mention. That would definitely be high for me.

American Pie is a good one as well, although I haven't seen it in quite a while.

Outside of the Hader/Rogen scenes, I didn't really like Superbad. I never got the hype with that one, but I know many dig it.

Office Space
Anchorman
Dumb & Dumber
Happy Gilmore

Feels wrong leaving Dazed & Confused, The Big Lebowski, and The Hangover out but there's only 4 on Rushmore.

All of mine already popular choices. In no particular order:

Fast Times
Trading Places
Fletch
Office Space

Tough call between Fletch and Vacation. Others I love but haven't seen mentioned: My Cousin Vinny and School of Rock.

As someone who went to school and now lives (again) where Animal House was filmed, I always wonder if I overestimate it. Hell I even went to a toga party in the same room that scene was filmed while in college, and have been to the Dexter Lake Club. So it’s great to see all the love here.

I think most of mine have been mentioned, but it’s also too hard to narrow it down to four, but I think these six would be the top.

Animal House
Real Genius
Fletch
Napoleon Dynamite
Office Space
Step Brothers

Bridesmaids, Wedding Crashers, and The Hangover might be the ones that I saw in the theater with the most laughter, all three of them the whole place was dying.

Dumb and Dumber
Fast Times
Superbad
Step Brothers

For most of my life, Caddyshack would have been the first mention, but it's been fading on me the past few years.

I see a lot of love for Dumb and Dumber. I would put that on the Mt Rushmore of movies that are a lot funnier quoting lines and talking about them than actually watching the movie. I didn't think the movie was that great while watching it but there are so many quotable lines that it gets better after the fact........still not good enough for making the list though.

Animal house is super over rated too. It gets the boomer nostalgia vote and has a couple good quotes but overall it was a big letdown

My Cousin Vinnie is one of if not the most accurately portrayed court procedural movies ever made. I used to use it as teaching material in a criminal procedure class I taught. So, yeah, I suppose it's a comedy, but I think of it more so as one of the few "good" law movies (along with A Few Good Men, 12 Angry Men, and A Time to Kill).

Ghostbusters
Young Frankenstein
Step Brothers
Bruno
Have more time to explain mine.

Ghostbusters - Not getting enough love as a comedy. Peak Bill Murray IMO. Quotable for days, still makes me laugh. Is also a really cool movie that holds up so well.
Young Frankenstein - Again, so many quotable lines, Probably the movie I can think of that has the best comedic timing.
Step Brothers - This was my last one in and its kind of tied with Vacation. I can watch this and go back to being a kid and loving what makes an 8 year old laugh.
Bruno - A bit of a dark horse, but getting Paula Abdul to sit on a naked Mexican will never not be one of the funniest things on film. Also the fact that the stunts were mostly real and also targeted at a demographic I dislike makes it so much better.

I saw the other Vacation movies get a mention but I'll throw in Vegas Vacation as an honorable mention. The blackjack scenes alone are classic.

Quotability was the #1 criteria I used in whittling down my list. It's really the only reason I bumped Dazed & Confused. The other squeezes were more challenging since they're also staples in our every day vernacular. i.e. just finished a road trip with the fam...

11 yr old son: **looking at google maps** How far have we gone since our last stop?
Me: We grabbed a bite in Dubois and are almost to Harrisburg- figure it out and tell us.
11 yr old son: **calculates** Wow, we never go 150 miles without stopping!
Me: Nah, **points at phone** according to the map, we've only gone 4 inches.
**Wife and 14 yr old erupt in laughter**

In my mind, that^^^ is the difference between a good and great comedy.

But you have to be able to like the movie while watching too. I didn't think the movie was very good. So while there are quotes that are good the movie wasn't great. It's a fine line but you need a movie to do both to get to the top of Mt Rushmore. D&D just didn't do that for me.

With respect, if you're actually uncertain about whether My Cousin Vinny is a comedy, you might be taking the courtroom procedural stuff a little too seriously.

I undoubtedly am.

As somebody whose jobs is very often made more challenging by completely awful representations of the court process in the entertainment industry, I have created a sort of separate genre in my mind of "movies that are actually pretty realistic - hooray!"

And, if I had to pick 1 actor that would make up my Mt Rushmore, it would have to be Eddie.

Harlem Nights
Coming to America
Beverly Hills Cop
48 Hours
I have an unnatural fondness for Boomerang, and would replace Harlem Nights with that.
I do too. Can't argue against your preference.

Huh, me too. I'm sure it has nothing to do with peak Robin Givens and pre-peak but adorable Halle Berry.

It's also very funny, especially the John Witherspoon scene. "You got to coooooooordinate...." and "why don't you....reverse it...."

I just assume that most trials go as they are shown on Law and Order -- with the defendant openly admitting his guilt on the stand after an especially clever line of questioning from the prosecutor.

Bang, bang, bang!

I also laugh a bit at the Asperagus tips and billards scenes. Imo very underrated movie.
