It has probably been done before.  I wanted to get this going during the heart of March Madness, but got busy.   We are focusing on movie directors still alive and active today.

What I intend this to be (took the idea from a podcast) is to vote on who's new movie would you want to see today.  Obviously past movies factor into this, but it should be just as much about what they are doing now and what you think their output will be in the future.  Essentially the only information you have about the movie before watching it is "New Movie by ____________".

I loved the individual director threads I was doing and the discussion with each, but I thought this would be a fun way to talk about a lot of directors quickly.  Vote/discuss/debate/argue away!!  Votes will be public, and I included the seeding in the poll options.

I can only do 4 questions each thread, so the intent is to do a couple threads (one corner of the overall bracket) every day or so.  I will give it a few days for voting and then do the next round.

Couple of things here:

  1. Coen Brothers are gonna demolish Gunn.  This has the smell of a 1 against a play-in 16.  Total annihilation.
  2. I still haven't decided between Jackson and Howard.  I lean Howard due to breadth of career and top notch movie making but Jackson's Lord of the Rings was seminal in the way Star Wars made Lucas.  Let's hope Jackson veers away from schlock.   Screw it, I convinced myself, it's Howard.
  3. Nichols is someone I keep my eye on but Lee takes this contest in the here and now.
  4. Ridley Scott by a mile.

To me that 5-12 match is one of the hardest decisions for me.  I think Nichols is one of the best new directors and I am always looking forward to what he does (he has a new one out very soon with Michael Shannon again).  However, I think Lee has made 3-4 epic movies.

Agreed.  In ten years(3 to 4 movies more for each) it could be close but right now Lee is damn good.

They are going to get my vote this round, but just like with Spielberg, I am not sure how long I will be voting for the Coen Brothers.  I just can't do their comedies,  but love their dramas.  I am not sure I would want to risk having to watch something like The Ladykillers or Burn After Reading.

Spielberg-v-Coen Brothers would be a classic battle.  What side of the bracket are they on?
Opposite.  Spielberg is upper left (I called it the NW), and Coens are in the upper right.  These first 4 that I have done are the top 1/2 of the bracket.

So a semi-final it is...
You don't think someone like Tarantino or Fincher will knock either out? I think there are 3 very strong #2 seeds in this thing.  Looking at what I have down, I think the bottom right bracket is the weakest, so that #1 will probably walk in to the final 4.

Tarantino, no.  He is someone I watch closely but he takes forever to make a movie and while his hit rate is likely similar to many of the best in this contest his dearth leaves you wanting.

As for Fincher, I gotta admit, I had to stop and think about his resume.  Or more accurately, I looked up his wiki to make sure it was him that made those movies I was thinking about.   It was him and that made me nod my head.  Could be an upset brewing...

Just saying that there is a strong Tarantino backing on the board.

Understood, and I am one of the backers, but there's no denying he'd get beat, and likely pretty badly, against Spielberg and the Coens.

I voted for Nichols, partly b/c I admire a director who can make a great movie on a shoestring budget.    Lee's Hulk was just awful.   All that said, this was a tough choice.

We managed to get a lot of votes quickly last night, and no close races in this one.  One last bump and will call this one.

I will be the only vote for JC Chandor.  I think all three of his movies have been great.  As far as Scott, I think his prime is far behind him.  I thought The Martian was OK.  Didn't like any of his 4 movies before that: Exodus: Gods and Kings,The Counselor, Prometheus, or Robin Hood.  I will definitely pass on that stretch of movies.
