It has probably been done before.  I wanted to get this going during the heart of March Madness, but got busy.   We are focusing on movie directors still alive and active today.

What I intend this to be (took the idea from a podcast) is to vote on who's new movie would you want to see today.  Obviously past movies factor into this, but it should be just as much about what they are doing now and what you think their output will be in the future.  Essentially the only information you have about the movie before watching it is "New Movie by ____________".

I loved the individual director threads I was doing and the discussion with each, but I thought this would be a fun way to talk about a lot of directors quickly.  Vote/discuss/debate/argue away!!  Votes will be public, and I included the seeding in the poll options.

I can only do 4 questions each thread, so the intent is to do a couple threads (one corner of the overall bracket) every day or so.  I will give it a few days for voting and then do the next round.

Michael Bay should be jailed for his crimes against cinema.  How he gets any votes is beyond me. :X

I am disappointed there isn't many posts on why people voted the way they did.  Is it a vote for Bay, or a vote against Aronofsky?

Did you not even like The Rock?

I went Aronofsky for the originality factor. But I love a Bay film when I'm in the right mood.

Favreau v linklater is an interesting matchup. I went Favreau as I think Linklater has lost his critical editing much like Crowe has.

Also Cameron v Wheedon. I love Buffy and firefly but I don't think joss has found his feature film legs yet. Avengers was a mess. I have not seen much ado.

After looking at Bay's filmography I gotta say The Rock is the Only movie worth a damn to me, and that is large part due to Sean Connery and Ed Harris chewing up the scenery.  Even Armageddon was annoying in it's eye rolling bombast.  Trust me, I'm not one to shy away from sci-fi schlock but you don't have to use a sledge hammer the whole damn time to make your movie a spectacle.

Take the Core for example.  Now that movie was ridiculous in it's"science" and it was over the top in the expedition deaths but the director, Jon Amiel, gave that movie some life and  color by softening the edges a bit.  I've watched The Core a few times tv and am still entertained by it.  Bay, on the other hand,  just plows his through hi movies with BANGS!, CLANGS!, LIGHTS!, and heavy handed exposition.  Gives me a headache and makes me feel stupid for giving him my money.

You know what KP, you're right.  I was voting against Bay rather than For Aronofsky.  That was my knee jerk reaction which is the way I look at this tournament's  purpose.  Having said that, Aronofsky is a Very good director and I am always intrigued when I hear he is attached to a project so I guess that counts for a vote For as well as a vote Against.

I agree on your take on Wheedon, Nick, even though Cameron was in a good place to win no matter which lower seed he went up against  His catalog is too impressive to not warrant interest when he has a new offering coming out.

Cameron is the same as Bay to me. All sizzle no meat.

Any new Nolan movie is something I will line up to see.

Aronofsky was one of my top 5 favorite directors.  I thought his run of Requiem ---> Black Swan was fantastic.  Then came Noah.  Now I have to temper expectations a bit.

Hey KP, did Duncan Jones make your list? Probably be a high teen seed but I would watch any new movie he does based on his short resume. Even a Warcraft film.

Very close, but was trying to trim it down to directors with 3+ movies under their belt so we have more of a sample.

Cameron has turned into that, but his early career movies had some surprising heart at their core.  The Abyss, T2, and Aliens all had a good story and characters to go with pushing the envelope on f/x.  Then he seemed to turn into a director like Lucas - too busy putzing with his toys to care about the story.  Avatar looked damn good, but was dumb as hell.

Nolan is teetering on the edge for me now.  From the 2nd 1/2 of Dark Knight on, I have been losing more and more interest with him.  Still love the guy for his dedication for practical effects and pushing the IMAX format, but didn't like DK rises or Interstellar much.  I still am interested to see him tackle history with Dunkirk.

Bumping this one.  Seems like we only have about 1/2 the votes in here vs. #5.
Good move. Missed this bracket.

Are we getting seven and eight soon? I'm hoping a certain director makes the list, because she might be my favorite of anybody going today.

Oh no!

Oh well, this has been well done regardless, but that might be an oversight.

I'm going with Kathryn Bigelow (Point Break, Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty) as the play-in seed. I'd go see a full-length feature by her before almost anyone on the list so far, but taste is subjective.

I thought maybe I missed someone else.  Bigelow is in the bottom right, and she gets a pretty good seed with a match against an "artsy" director.

Sweet. This has been fun.  :)

eta* Please tell me it's not Whit Stillman. I can't vote if it is.

I'm guessing Bigelow's illegal benefits to AAU(Amateur Acting Union) actors led to her suspension and thus made her ineligible for the tourney.  Tough but dems the breaks.

Nice touch.

I guess I should delete my post now, but I won't. :P
I wouldn't. Saved for posterity. Just make sure you throw away the burner phones the kids are using, and we'll all be good.

A lot of votes in the NE corner, so I will call that one.  No real upsets there all the 1-7 seed won easily.  Winners:

1 - Coens 67-4

2 - Fincher 75-2

3 - Soderbergh 70-7

4 - R. Scott 67-4

5 - Ang Lee  50-21

6 - Boyle  47-30

7 - Abrams 68-9

9 - R.Howard 47-24
