It has probably been done before.  I wanted to get this going during the heart of March Madness, but got busy.   We are focusing on movie directors still alive and active today.

What I intend this to be (took the idea from a podcast) is to vote on who's new movie would you want to see today.  Obviously past movies factor into this, but it should be just as much about what they are doing now and what you think their output will be in the future.  Essentially the only information you have about the movie before watching it is "New Movie by ____________".

I loved the individual director threads I was doing and the discussion with each, but I thought this would be a fun way to talk about a lot of directors quickly.  Vote/discuss/debate/argue away!!  Votes will be public, and I included the seeding in the poll options.

I can only do 4 questions each thread, so the intent is to do a couple threads (one corner of the overall bracket) every day or so.  I will give it a few days for voting and then do the next round.

In this SE region I am very nervous for 2 of my favorite directors getting an early bounce.  Might be Woody Allen level anger if it happens....

I think Guy Ritchie is very under ranked. With some of the other previous rankings, I think he should be in the 8-10 range.

Yea. He got robbed by the committee. Scorsese will bury him but I had to give him a vote. Lock Stock,  Snatch and the Sherlock movies are stylish and brilliant. Scorsese is a legend and I'll watch most things he comes out with.

Yikes.  I am the only vote for Villeneuve.  I thought Sicario was fantastic, and vastly better than anything Eastwood has done since Mystic River.  Also loved Incendies and Prisoners.  He is also doing the Blade Runner movie - sign me up, but I guess I am watching it alone.

I like Villeneuve a lot and am glad he was pegged for Blade Runner, but I thought Sicario was very overrated and Prisoners didn't offer any surprises and even gave in to the pressure of providing a Hollywood ending.  I haven't seen Incendes.

Eastwood gets a lot of undeserved flak. I think a vocal group of people soured on him a bit when Million Dollar Baby turned into a treatise on euthanasia and Gran Torino really bothered some people too (I think the common theme between them of a man who turned away from God is probably a big part of that as well). I think that criticism is unfair, he consistently provides thoughtful well composed films.

I think in a couple of years Villeneuve will be considered a higher seed in tourneys like this but he still has a ways to go to surpass Clint in my book.

Fair points.  I just think a lot of the higher seeds are older guys that I feel we have seen the best of already.  IMO Clint is churning out solid, but underwhelming movies (except Hereafter - that was just a turd fest).  I am pretty sure I am not going to be blown away by a movie of his.  There are a lot of these younger guys that I would rather watch their movies because I think they have a great movie in them - Villeneuve, Nichols, etc..   Like I've stated in other threads, I think Sicario was one of the better movies I have seen this decade so far, so I am definitely going to see that director's follow up.

Looks like the only close match in this corner is the Jonze/Greengrass battle.  I will let the voting go through most of tomorrow in this corner.  I will get up the polls for the matchups that will lead us to the sweet 16 tomorrow night or Saturday.  Here is what we are looking at, so you can start planning your votes and arguments:

NW Region:

Sam Mendes vs. Stevie Spielberg

Alexander Payne vs. David Lynch

Gus Van Sant vs. Alejandro González Iñárritu

Judd Apatow vs. Quentin Tarantino

NE Region:

Ron Howard vs. Coen Brothers

Ang Lee vs. Ridley Scott

Danny Boyle vs. Steve Soderberg

JJ Abrams vs. David Fincher

SW Region:

Francis Ford Coppola vs. Paul Thomas Anderson

Ben Affleck vs. Lord/Miller

Jon Favreau vs. Darren Aronofsky

James Cameron vs. Christopher Nolan

I can just feel heads exploding looking at that SW region.  The Lego Movie guys??!!  The Elf guy??!! People actually want to see Avatar 2-8??!! ;)

Could be.  I guess I had him in the tier of great movies awhile ago, but in a rut of churning out similar stuff now.
Biggest upset so far is Ritchie getting one vote.  I figure a few idiots but 15%?

I think Hugo did him in?  Hugo?

Nothing against Greengrass, but I'm bummed that Spike Jonze seems to be getting an early exit.  If my Spike Jonze alias hadn't been banned, I would log in with it to cast a vote now.

You should rename that SW division the "Charmin Division." We're just missing the director of all those Twilight movies up in there.

:hophead:

For my tastes, it is the most talent at the top, but i get the sneaking feeling you and I don't agree much on movies.
