Movie Theater Behavior... Really?!? (1 Viewer)

you gotta question your addiction to a phone if you do these things:

1) use it during a movie

2) use it while driving

3) use it at a dinner/date/social gathering

It's at the point where it's ridiculous. I don't understand it one bit, but then again, I'm the guy who leaves his cell in the car whenever I go somewhere.

I honestly think people don't realize how bad they are with these things. My wife and I often go on driving trips on the weekends, and it was always fun to be together, listen to the radio, comment on the scenery, etc. Lately, she's been on facebook constantly while we were driving, and even though she's in the passenger seat, it started to bug me - like what we were doing wasn't fun anymore, and she needed to continually see who commented on her last post or whatnot. I brought it up to her, and she honestly didn't even realize she was doing it. It's become *that* automatic. Have a down second? Check facebook.

My wife is the same way. She is addicted to her phone, especially facebook and instagram. She's is basically checking them every five minutes. She uses almost 3 gigs on data alone just for that. In the car, at the movies, watching TV with her, at a restaurant. It's fairly sickening. Then again i go on this site and rotoworld every chance i get. Walk to the bathroom at work? Walking outside? Waiting on line? I'm on my phone

My wife and I go to the theater MAYBE once every other year. We just can't stand the high cost and obnoxious people.

We wait for it to come out on Redbox if we are interested, and Netflix if it seems 'watchable'.
High cost? Well it is more than $1.00. But please. People don't complain about spending $11.00 for lunch at Chipotle but $7-$12 on a movie is high cost? That narrative is getting old. It's one of the cheapest entertainment options out there.

I really just wanted to see what people thought about the doctor issue but since there are those that want to know exactly what I did, here you go.

First, I switched seats with my wife. Second, I told that jerk what I thought of him and his actions, I think "arrogant #####" were the words I used. I also asked them to put their phones away, which all of those around us supported. Apparently, even the row behind us could see the light from their screens. The usher came down due to the commotion and he told them that if they did it again, they would be asked to leave the theater. They did stop for the remainder of the film. When the credits came on they hurried out the other end of the aisle and took off. The last thing I saw was the son checking out his phone as they left the theater.
Sounds like you did the right thing here....No need to blow the situation up any more than necessary.

Movie tix here are generally about $16 for the stadium seating. Family of four that comes to about $60 assuming kids are cheaper. Add popcorn, drinks, snacks you are talking $80 for two hours of entertainment.

Went to see Vacation with me wife. There were 8 people in the theatre including us. These three idiots walk in (1 20ish guy, 2 girls) and proceed to sit right in front of us. I said "there's a whole theatre, you know." Just got ignored. So we got up to move down the row further. I decided to keep moving, circled around the end of the row and went and sat right next to the dude.

My wife started laughing. THen I got up and moved back to be next to her. I should have stayed until he moved. And flipped open my phone.
what the ####?

I'm really not, and maybe that's why I notice it more.

I'm here during my workday on my desktop, but I work for myself at home, so it's not at the expense of interacting with others.

I think a "five foot rule" is a good one in general terms. If you are within five feet of someone you know, put your phone away, as it's really kind of rude (and of course, turn it off at the theater / concert / etc).

I would avoid taking the family to anything but matinees - which even here in LA you can get somewhat cheap, $8.29 before noon at the AMC I go to.

What does it cost a family of four to do other things? Throwing a frisbee or playing on the swings are free, but what else?Mini golf is about the same price pp but without the snacks.

College hockey game is $120 plus food and drinks.

Dinner at Olive Garden-type place is about the same.

Trampoline park is about the same for 1 hour.

It was $6 a ticket to get into my son's hockey games five years ago and we still had to volunteer x times, pay $400 and pay for all equipment and clothing.

Just sayin, it's not like we're talking Lakers or Knicks court side prices here. Pretty reasonable given the quality of the entertainment and venue.

Plenty of stuff to do that is low cost. Grab the local free newspaper/letter. There is always something going on. Family art classes, local museums, pottery classes, volunteer at the local soup kitchen, the list goes on and on.

Here is the big picture: I said earlier the movies are too 'high cost'. Money is only part of the equation. A movie is a dark room where you are forbidden to interact with people. Yes, you are entertained(hopefully) for a couple of hours. However, you are missing the opportunity to build relationships with your family/girlfriend/wife/friends.

No kidding. Who would pay good money to see "Vacation"? Pretty obvious from the trailers that it was going to be a turdfest.

the other side of that is that movies are a chance to escape from daily reality and have a shared experience, like riding a roller coaster.

I would have pooped in my popcorn bucket and then switched it with his while he was looking at his phone.
