Tonight is Tony Kornheiser's first appearance on Monday Night Football.

Loved his column in the Post and I like PTI quite a bit.

Discuss.

I think Tony will do well and will be entertaining. It's Theisman I'm worried about. He is such a pompous ###. I suspect the producers have instructed these two to have a running comedic banter while Tirico plays straight guy. It could get boring very fast. Then again, it may work. Who knows? But if this line-up ends up sucking, I'm sure it will be Theisman's fault.

In before an ignorant comparison to Dennis Miller. :bye:

If you ever had the pleasure of reading his Sunday editorials or listened to his syndicated radio show, you would know he is not Dennis Miller. Tony Kornheiser is a journalist and writer first and he knows a thing or two about sports even though he often plays dumb. He is far, very far from being dumb. He'll do fine on Monday night and will likely be less annoying than a number of past MNF broadcasters.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement Doc.

 Theesman = :yucky:

I'm a fan of Tony. The reason why I like him is because he doesn't take himself too serious.

Anyone know if he will be doing "Old Man Radio" during MNF?? The guy can't focus on one thing for more than 10 minutes, he will be all over the place on a 3 hour show. ADD. Can't wait for Riggins to replace Tirico for a all skin homer lineup. I think it might make me look back fondly of Miller's days.

It's "Old Guy Radio" and amazingly 10 minutes is the approximate time of a break in his radio show. So it works out perfectly.

I like Mr. Tony but I think it's not a sure thing that the format will suit his talents. I just hope they haven't been making him watch old Howard Cosell tapes. Let Mr. Tony be Mr. Tony.

I just hope the penguin dance becomes a staple on MNF.

:sarcasm:

But I really do like Tony on PTI. MNF should've hired Wilbon instead of Theisman. Wilbon did well during the NBA finals and he can name drop on almost every guy out there since they hang out in his hot tub. But I know they think they have to have an ex-quarterback in the booth. They should've made a run at Aikman because I think he rocks on FOX. He is head & shoulders better than Theisman.

Don't know much about Tirico's work but everyone seems to be high on him.

If the crew doesn't work, it will be because of JOEY T. There is just something about him that rubs you the wrong way, kind of like off-brand toilet paper.

This is it. He's great at *acting* like a pompous ### on PTI, but he always lets you in on the joke. You *know* that he's acting.

I love TK, but he is admittedly somewhat an acquired taste, sort of a sports intellectual. When he had his radio show it meandered over politics, history, etc., and by no means stuck to sports. It did very poorly in some major markets, I think because it lacked mass appeal.

I frankly don't think he'll do real well on MNF, although I'll be rooting for him. I think, like Dennis Miller, he's operating on a different wavelength from joe sixpack.

But unlike Dennis Miller, he's got a background in sports and a background in sports broadcasting. He's certainly not an X's and O's guy and will probably screw up more names than Miller did, but he'll be coming at it from a sports perspective rather than trying to work "the Sword of Damocles" into an overwrought one-liner about Kurt Warner's wife.If he plays it right, he might actually do well with joe sixpack, because he has never been afraid to point at someone and say "that guy stinks". There have been lots of times when watching football and you know a guy screwed up and the announcers just kind of dance around it. I hope they let Kornheiser rip people in those cases. (Particularly if he's ripping Theisman.) The main thing that worries me is that whether they let him ramble enough to get going in full Mr. Tony mode because he's never been real quick to the punch. Even PTI he has a good 30 seconds per topic.

I'm cautiously optimistic that it will go well. although I agree having him and Wilbon in the booth would have been :moneybag:

Agree about Joey-T. Even (or maybe especially) Skins fans have a difficult time with him. Ever since Sonny and Billy worked him over during his rookie year in the NFL he's had a chip on his shoulder.BUT, he did win a Super Bowl for my team and got them to another the following year. For that, I'll refrain from ripping him too much. I have chosen to just ignore him when he's on air. Never listen to the NFL broadcasters anyway...

part of his charm, is that he "spins a yarn". i think he will get frustrated not being able to take the time to be creative as he normally is. it takes him time to say something that is entertaining and when you are the 3rd guy in a booth that is shared with Theesman, he isn't going to have the time to say what he wants to.i like him a lot, but i don't think this format is a good fit for him. having said that i hope he does well and i hope it does work out for him.

:goodposting: My feelings exactly. He's at his best when he has a 2 hour radio format where he has plenty of time to ramble on about a myriad of diverse subjects. I really don't think MNF is the best stage for him but I hope he does well.
