MSNBC Host Makes Fun of Mitt Romney’s Black GrandsonBy L.A. Ross 14 hours ago
MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry concluded the “What’s So Funny About 2013?” segment of her Sunday show with a chorus of laughter at the black grandson pictured in former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s family Christmas photo. The chuckles were directed at baby Kieran – who was adopted by Romney’s son Ben and his wife Andelynne in September.

“One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just isn’t the same,” panelist Pia Glenn offered as a caption for the photo, which the Romneys tweeted on Christmas Eve. (Lyrics of the original Sesame Street song are, “One of these things just doesn’t belong.”)

“And that little baby, front and center, would be the one,” Glenn said.

Comedian Dean Obeidallah joked that the baby is a token.

“It really sums up the diversity of the Republican party and the RNC, where they have the whole convention and they find the one black person.”

Conservative blogs on Monday roundly criticized MSNBC and the panelists for the segment. Commentator Caleb Howe wrote tongue-in-cheek on The Right Scoop: “He’s not a child adopted by loving parents prepared to provide him with a better life in keeping with the family’s values. Nope. He’s just a token. A punchline, not a person.”

“It’s funny because Romney is white and his grandson isn’t, which is obviously hilarious. Because as everyone knows, the races should not mix,” Howe added [emphasis original].

Republican Arizona Sen. John McCain, who ran for president in 2008, also has an adopted child of a different race. McCain’s wife Cindy brought daughter Bridget home after a cyclone relief trip to Bangladesh in 1991.

Glenn acknowledged the controversy on Twitter Monday but fell short of apologizing, instead blaming the producers of the show for springing the photo on her and the panelists.

She wrote in response to a critic, “”Really? You think I’m a producer on the show? You think I chose that photo & new [sic] it was coming?”

“Yes, I sang the song. There are many children in the pic & only 1 black child. I don’t see that as mocking or attacking the baby.”

Harris-Perry and other panelists have thus far remained mum.

Ironically, the segment ends by teasing the next block, an annual “’Look Back in Laughter’ tradition of asking ‘Hey – Was That Racist?’”

MSNBC copying Fox shtick and just as stupid.
Examples of Fox doing anything similar to this?
Really? Are you people serious? Yes Fox has never made fun of anyone's kids. They never do anything racially insensitive. They are so awesome and just misunderstood. You guys kill me.
1. Making fun of someone's children.

2. Making fun of someone's children's race.

Same? Or different?
Look you guys go ahead and pretend Fox is some paragon of journalistic integrity that never crossed a line and enjoy yourselves. I'm done.

Good because you look like a fool already in this thread.

Oh please, give me a break, no one's doing that. We can all say Fox is not journalistically pure or awesome (take your pick, I don't care) and also say they have no similar example of having done this kind of thing. Geez, has MSNBC? Hard to remember, but I'd say no, it was aberrant behavior and unacceptable on any network.

It's inexcusable.

Shameful and classless from MSNBC.
Seems like the norm for this network though

with Martin Bashir wanting to drop a deuce in Sarah Palins mouth coming out on air.

And they wonder why the ratings are so low.
OTOH, who doesn't want to drop a deuce in Sarah Palins mouth?
Let's leave Glen Robinson out of this
Think you mean Glen Rice
Can't believe I blew the joke, damn

There are two lines that were crossed here:

1) You never use someone's minor child as political ammunition; and

2) Ridiculing the adoption of a child on racial grounds promotes racism (not to mention can only discourage inter-racial adoptions).

On the second point, it's more shocking that this is coming from ultra-liberal MSNBC than it would be from Fox simply because the Left supposedly is staunchly in favor of racial equality whereas racism is supposedly expected of conservatives. That they not only crossed this line but used a minor child as fodder to do it shows how desperate these panelists are to make a personal attack on a conservative figure, someone who by the way has been next-to-irrelevant in national politics since losing the election to Obama almost 14 months ago.

Fox News is, stricltly speaking, irrelevant to this discussion, however for those defending Fox, don't. You don't need an identical copy of this incident to know that Fox hosts/commentators engage in plenty of race-baiting and other objectionable commentary and views. I'm sure there are sites out there that compile such things if you go and look.

This is how you can tell that liberals don't view blacks as equal, they just use them for votes.

Probably best to just agree that this is completely classless and not get into a Fox/MSNBC finger-pointing reboot.

I am very similar to Pol Pot and Stalin because they murdered thousands of people and I once got a speeding ticket.

Said another way, this shows how (some) liberals think that they have a monopoly on all things African-American, so much so that they can resent a family member of a conservative politician adopting a black baby. It's disgusting.

NCC, if there's a "side" I'm on yours. But what the hell? This is ####### awful. Please stop with the "you guys are awfuller" stuff. It's a dumb-assed, circular argument that does no one any good.

How did anyone even find this out if no one is ever watching MSNBC? :treefallsinwoods:
I'm pretty sure that a significant % of MSNBC's viewers are conservatives who are looking for opportunities such as this.
And because it's just plain funny. I've long suspected this was more an attempt at comedy than actual news, and now they go do something like this to totally redeem themselves.

These round tables/panels get out of control with their comments on all these cable news networks. I often watch the Fox five group because I love that tall, leggy Brunette, but those people are just up their ranting hoping to make it on the Jon Stewart show. They are all terrible at humor though, the MSNBC comments wading about nose-deep into the stupid waters.

Time for everyone to pretend to be offended again. Someone let Richie Incognito it's safe for him to leave the house now.
