My countdown list of one hit wonders- 1. Play That Funky Music (Wild Cherry) (1 Viewer)

68. “Walking on Sunshine”- Katrina & The Waves (1985)

FTR- the song this band wrote that was covered by the Bangles was “Going Down to Liverpool”. That in turn got them noticed by Capitol Records and the rest was history.

Couple things I really like about this tune besides its cheerful upbeat lyrics and melody: the fast speed that the band is playing, particularly the drums, and how sweet the vocals are: she sounds like Smokey Robinson to me. A timeless classic.
Obligatory link from High Fidelity :D

Not who you mean, but Tony Burrows had 1hw's as lead singer for Edison Lighthouse, White Plains, The Pipkins, Brotherhood of Man and The First Class...and at least 3 of those were on the charts at the same time.

68. “Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)”- Edison Lighthouse (1970)

Check out the groovy girls in this old video- so awesome. This is a happy snappy tune, makes me feel good.
One down, four to go.  I actually dated a girl named Rosemary a few times when that song was on the charts.

On a completely unrelated note, Grant Gustin of The Flash got caught vaping in an airplane bathroom

i guess he is not as fast as his character, who is said to be as fast as lightning....

Was that number used in your local area code?

It was in mine.

Changed very soon afterwards.

I'd like to think that I had a small hand in that.

Good times.
I was a little too young to partake in those sorts of shenanigans when Tommy Tutone was a thing.

But did you know ... that Squeeze's last top-40 hit was titled "853-5937"? I knew very well indeed, because my best friend was dating a girl whose family owned that number when that song was released. And for not more than two weeks thereafter.

Well at least it was not a Burger King bathroom.

Joe Bidens favorite song! ;)
Could probably do a whole Joe Biden album, no problem:

"Kiss You All Over", Exile
"Creep - Radiohead
"If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body, Would You Hold it Against Me?" - Bellamy Brothers
"Captain Howdy" - Twisted Sister
"Only Sixteen" - Dr. Hook

What else we got?

Then there are us oldtimers who have never heard the Brooks and Dunn version...and never want to.
Brooks & Dunn do a solid job with the song ... it's a faithful cover, a little slicker with more contemporary production.

Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin

Cotton Eyed Joe

65. “Kung Fu Fighting”- Carl Douglas (1974)

There are some very politically incorrect lyrics in this song “They were funky Chinamen, from funky Chinatown” but that’s ok because they’re hilarious. I also love the producer’s explanation for all of the loud “huh!”s and “ha!”s in the song: It was supposed to be a B-side so he didn’t care.

The other great one hit wonder with an oriental riff can be found a little higher on the list...

Up next: in addition to the song chosen here, this band is probably best known for writing the theme song to the 80s show Square Pegs.

It's been in like 60,000 movies/t.v. shows/commercials, been covered a billion times, appeared on pretty much every Christmas music compilation ever, has its very own wikipedia page - plenty of exposure. Plus you knew exactly which song I was referencing without me so much as linking to it.
Agreed - the Christmas song is very ubiquitous around the holidays. In fact, probably more popular overall than the boys one.

i guess the definition of "hit" sometimes transcends peak chart position.....

these things are hard to measure,  as bands like Free and The Grateful Dead are technically one hit wonders if we go strictly by chart position.  I am OK with being somewhat subjective on the definition.

That’s true. And honestly I hesitated before putting the other song on my list for that reason. But the other song fits at least one of my criteria and it is also cited by VH1 as one their top one hit wonders and is on at least 2  lists I found: VH1s top 100 one hit wonders of all time, and MTV’s greatest one hit wonders of the 80s. So i feel safe selecting it.

If we're going by VH1 and MTV, we've got much bigger problems here.

VH1 and MTV are essentially the same thing. And neither should be cited when executing the appeal to authority logical fallacy. Nya nya nya nya nyaaaaa, nya nya nya nya nyaaaaaa...

I’m going to state right now, so you guys know what’s coming, that I took opposite approaches to these two bands.

The Grateful Dead has several songs that received radio play and they are not especially known for their one hit, so it’s not on this list.

Free, on the other hand, despite being a great rock band (with many songs I love) got radio play for one song only, and they are known for that song, and since it’s their only hit I felt it deserved to be on this list- pretty high up in fact.
