I am at a point where my daily goal is 1330 calories (set my goal to lose 1.5 pounds/week) but I usually finish between 1200 & 1300 (don't remember going over) but I am on my 2nd period of plateauing (I am down to 175 from 195 and am 5'9'). My wife and I recently added 3 days/week of some home cross fit (I am up to 50 kettle bell swings, weightless squats, pushups and situps and am working up to 5 minutes of each) - this is in addition to me walking 4 miles/day for 3 or 4 days per week. I assume the plateaus are from muscle mass but confirmation would be nice. Any "tricks" to get past these points? Also, I have had the feeling the last 2 weeks that I don't have enough fiber going on (the last couple of days were better) - any good suggestions on fiber for the diet and not supplements?
For fiber, look at nuts and most fruits/veggies....especially broccoli and apples.Regarding the plateau, I heard of some people having success by varying up the calories. For example, let's say you are on a strict 1300 calorie diet and eat exactly 1300 each day. You could switch it up by doing 1000 on day, 1600 the next, then 1100, and then 1500....or something like that. I can't vouch for it personally but it works for some people.Another option to break through the plateau is hard core lifting and HIIT.
Almonds is my "go to" during the day and I have increased the fruits and vegetables a bit. More wouldn't hurt and I realized that recently - so thanks for confirming. I will try varying the calories. Someone said earlier they "tricked" their body by doing a binge and going over for a day or 2 - sounds similar. I think I would personally like that as well. Appreciate the thoughts.
I think it was body for life that recommended one binge day a week - not a total slop fest, but much higher calories - just to reset your metabolism, plus it gives you something to look forward to and remind me of how much of a slob I feel like when I eat lots of greasy food.
If got a "reset" weekend coming up in two weeks. Should be fun.

does anyone know how to "reset" the original weight in the app (or on the site). I have my correct goal in there, but I had originally signed up for the app a long time ago when I weighed less...so the little motivation things and reports are slightly off
The FAQ is great for these type questionshttp://www.myfitnesspal.com/faqQ. How can I change the starting weight or goal weight on my ticker?A. To change the starting weight or goal weight on your ticker, go to "Tools", then click "Tickers" in the light blue bar below the tabs. Next, click on "Update your weight data" and you'll be taken to a screen showing the starting weight and goal weight we have recorded. Just make whatever changes you'd like to those values and click "Save Changes."Your ticker will then be updated to reflect your new starting and goal weights. The changes will be reflected everywhere you have displayed your ticker automatically - you don't need to do anything else.
Awesome...thx

Well I got on the scale tonight. -14 lbs. So walking, counting calories and what not works. We should write a book.
I am going to write to Mt Dew and come up with a new diet book called "The Diet Mt Dew Diet". I have one every morning and have lost 55 pounds. Of course I will put in small text "along with a healthy diet and regular exercise" but still it all starts with that Dt Mt Dew in the morning for breakfast.

How long to drop the 14?
couple days short of a month. I was on schedule to lose 10lbs per the app with ZERO exercise when I started with the app. The best part is that I am not missing any foods that I enjoy. I have had sushi, steak, General Tso's Chicken, pulled pork but all in much smaller portions. Yesterday I was out on the road and I had forgotten my lunch in the office. Looked up chicken fingers from Chick-fil-A and McDonalds saw that 3 of those were only 350 calories. Not the best lunch but it was quick and easy and I didnt do anything stupid while in the fast food lane.

little annoying they don't have sex as an exercise.

seriously.

eta - pushups is my codeword from now on.

Might get a little odd if it would show up on the status updates:0tis burned 12 calories doing 2 minutes of "Sex". :P

I have had two bad days in a row with yesterday being horrible. I will get back on track today. Next week is vacation and I am pretty sure it will be a disaster calorie wise. I really need to do cardio every day. Without that I am ####ed.

I just got a new pair of trail shoes and decided it was time to go for a jog in Bidwell Park in Chico CA, my new town. I haven't jogged in about 1.5 years and that was only 2-3 miles a few times a week. I still have 1.2 miles to get back home(currently stopped at a Starbucks for a non sweetened ice coffee and banana), but I started jogging and just kept going since I felt so well. Two weeks of Insanity and eating right made it so I feel great after doing 7+ miles(didnt keep track) and had to slow it down because my feet started to take a beating from not being used to the pounding. Cheers.
I was thrilled when I played my first soccer game after losing 25 pounds. A teammate on the coed team asked if I had lost weight, and when I confirmed, she said it showed - I was a step faster to the ball. It felt great.

Congratulations to those finding success. I have been using the app for a couple of weeks now and have not weighed myself (more fear than anything) but I do know that I have come several hundred calories under my set goal every day. What really scares me is how much I was eating on a daily basis. I went back and for a day and put in what I would have eaten on any given day:

Average Intake during the week!

Typical Breakfast - Two Mcdonalds - Sausage, Egg & Cheese McMuffins: 900 calories - Large OJ: 280 Calories --- Total: 1180 Calories

Typical Lunch - 2 Big Macs (yes I know): 1100 calories, Large FF: 500 Calories, & Large Coke: 310 Calories --- Total: 1910 Calories
You never saw the movie Super Size me did you? :)
watch down size me,4 parts on you tube

Unsolicited complements like that definitely give you the motivation to keep going

When I was jogging two days ago in the park I got offered a phone number and told I looked great by two coeds as I was running by. Both had the hot/athletic look going on to. I felt amazing! :headbang:

Yeah but I am kind of doing a hybrid now. I did the first two weeks religiously and now I'm probably doing it 4-5 days a week instead of 6 and adding in a long jog for a day and going to the gym twice a week for upper body and core work. My girl friend commented on that I have lost weight but I have only lost a few pounds but have been toning up. The first time I did Insanity I completed it when I started at around 195 pounds I believe. People have started much heavier but just remember to make everything flow so you don't trash your joints. Also, if you need a extra rest day somewhere, take it, it won't hurt and if you feel that way then it is what your body needs to heal. But be prepared to feel like a robot on day 2-4 and then by day 5-6 the initial crazy soreness should go away and you will be able to have a much greater endurance.
To all those that mentioned Greek Yogurt.
 I have 1-2 of the fruit on the bottom cups everyday for my snacks now. I catch them on sale and stock up with enough to last two weeks.

Would also like to mention Almond Milk (Unsweetened) and Chocolate Almond Milk as great alternatives. Here is a great low calorie dessert:1 or 2 Segmented Frozen Bananas (depending on size about 4 pieces per banana) and 1 cup of Chocolate Almond Milk. Toss contents into blender and blend until smooth. Results are a great ice cream like shake or smoothie with 210 to 310 calories.

Tried Greek yogurt yesterday, strawberry.

I never have eaten a bloody tampon but I'm pretty sure this is as close as I'll ever get, ####### awful

That was my response the first time I tried it (well, not that drastic maybe). When you eat it expecting yogurt, it's nasty. But, once you get used to the difference, it isn't bad. I haven't tried the plain in replace of sour cream, but I could definitely see that working.

Never could like yougurt either. I'll have to try the "dip kind" - I don't like sour cream either. I have very plain taste but trying to expand but this was brutal, for me...

What kind was it? I ate yoplait strawberry granola greek yogurt for the first time a few days ago and it was great. I'm actually having it again for lunch today.

I have been eating Yoplat and think it is great. I was never much of a fan of yogurt.

1 week in and I had my first weigh in this morning.

I dropped 4.5 pounds of lard from my ###.

My entire goal is to drop 16 pounds so this was a nice start.

After the good news I went on my longest jog since I started this plan and finished 2.5 miles.

I will be joining a gym next week to keep things moving. I am worried about this week though. I will be in DC for the weekend with my two brothers which means eating out a lot.

Any recommendations on how to handle restaurant food?

I have not been pooping regularly since I started the program. I use to be a consistent once per day, but now I can go 2 or 3 days. I pretty much went cold turkey from eating junk to eating very healthy. You would think with all the fruit I have been eating, mostly grapes and apples, that this wouldn't be a problem.

Any suggestions?

Farfalle with chicken and roasted garlic "was" my favorite dish at the Cheesecake Factory until I found out that it was 2193 calories. I've stop several times on my way home to eat that, a salad and a few beers. Not to mention bread.

This is why I'm fat.

What is the perceived problem with eating at a restaurant? You can substitute vegetables for pasta, rice, potatoes etc. Order salads with a protein source as your meal. Ask for all sauces to be served on the side. Stuff like that, it's pretty easy.

Wife and I were out shopping so we stopped for a bite at Texas Roadhouse. Here was my meal

12 oz NY Strip 292 Calories I ordered the 12 oz and only ate half

Texas Roadhouse - House Salad W/ Croutons W/Bleu Cheese Drsg, 4 cups 201Calories

Longhorn Steakhouse - Sauteed Mushrooms & Onions , 1 Cup 90 Calories

So 583 calories for my meal and I was more than satisfied by it.

What is the perceived problem with eating at a restaurant?
Restaurants tend to cook with an abundance of salt and oil, to add flavor to entice the consumer to come back. I don't think this is a perception, I think it is likely pretty true.I understand I can substitute like crazy. I just hate the thought of spending money on stuff I don't like. At least at home when I am cooking I can control the ingredients. I have no control over how a restaurant prepares food.

A couple of questions not really related per say to the app.

1) If you could choose only one, which would be better for weight loss

a) Hitting your calorie goal and beating your fat goal by 10%

or

b) Hitting your fat goal and beating your calorie goal by 10%

2) Does the ambient temperature you work out in affect the amount of calories you burn? I was wondering if I am burning more calories when running around a outdoor track at 90 degrees than doing the same distance and speed inside an air conditioned gym.

What's not to like about a protein (steak, chicken, fish) and vegetable meal? And I think the health risks associated with sodium are likely overstated, however you are correct that restaurants often go overboard. Oil is a bigger problem as they are likely using low quality vegetable oils but at many restaurants you can ask to substitute with olive oil or even butter (of course you should be prepared to tip more if you are going to be that high maintenance).

c) hitting your fat and calorie goal but beating the carb goal by 75% (at least according to what MFP is telling me which is that I should be eating in excess of 300g of carbs daily)

This is another problem that I need to get past. I hate bothering people. I tend to cringe when I hear other people bugging to "switch this", "put that" on the side etc. I know this is my mental block. I can barely get out "medium please" when asked how I want something cook with out twitching :(
