And I think the health risks associated with sodium are likely overstated, however you are correct that restaurants often go overboard. Oil is a bigger problem as they are likely using low quality vegetable oils but at many restaurants you can ask to substitute with olive oil or even butter (of course you should be prepared to tip more if you are going to be that high maintenance).
As in anything, in moderation, it's not going to kill you. However, the primary problem with combining weight loss with salt and oil is the effect it has on your metabolism. Slows it down significantly.

Nope, on-line NASM class. Processed sugars fall into this category too. There were others, but those were the 3 highlighted items.

National Academy of Sports Medicine. I used to be a trainer, still do some actually but only have a handful of clients after work/weekends and a couple of small groups. Did a couple of nutrition classes because I quickly noticed most of my clients issues were more food related than gym. In fact, fixing the food problems created more energy which made the gym hurdle easier to cross.

Would still like to see some kind of supporting evidence for your claim about salt, sugar and oil slowing down metabolism.

You could research, or just try it. I'm no longer certified through them so I can't access the info. I've had clients do it though. Exact same amount of calories for 2 weeks + workout regimen, one period is salt + oil free and all sugars consumed are 'natural,' the other includes salt + oil and does not restrict natural vs. processed sugars. More weight and fat loss during the natrual period vs. the alternative.

Today is my 8th day and I’m down 6 lbs so far. I stayed under my calorie goal the first 6 days but yesterday I went over by 210. I'm not going to kill myself over that - just going to buckle down this week and keep at it. Thanks to all for the tips. Best things that have helped me so far:

1) Drinking lots of water. Definitely keeps you feeling full

2) Baby carrot snack packs from Wawa (a Northeast convenience store, similar to a 7-11) – only 30 calories for a 3 oz pack – great low calorie snack to hold you over. In the past I couldn’t eat raw carrots without dipping them into a fatty cream based dressing dip, but I am digging the taste of them just plain out of the bag. It’s amazing what a goal will do for your preferences and taste

3) In addition to water, been drinking a lot of unsweetened iced tea. Zero calories and delicious!

Well, I had a bad day yesterday. Girlfriend surprised me with pizza and homemade cupcakes...they were so good.
She is trying to sabotage you. Break up immediately.j/kOn a serious note, I did date 2 women who didn't like the fact that I was starting a workout program. "I don't like ripped/skinny guys". :loco:

Bad day at work today. Caved and hit a drive through for lunch. I'm not sure it is entirely healhy, but I eat very little in the morning, so with a moderate workout tonight, the day is not lost.

Lost two pounds the first week. Want to keep the momentum going.

Dont let a bad day turn in to a bad week... this stuff works, just stay with it overall

Has anyone else noticed a jump in data use on their iphone since using this app? Ever since I added this app, I show data usage (300-400 kb) at about 12:30 am--when I am asleep AND in a wifi area.

Friggan iOS.

My wife is starting to use MFP.

She just logged off for the day and beat her calorie goal

I posted a comment that was suppose to be

"way to go pookie!"

iOS auto correct turned it into

"way to go porkie"

Cool free app my buddy Sucrose just turned me on to: Fooducate
Pretty cool, thanks
Everything in my house is a C or worse except fruits & veggies. I've scanned everything we eat (yea I know :nerd: whatever). Wife has decided to start buying healthy again, we'll see how long it lasts this time. I don't trust everything the app has to say about the food but there is some pretty eye opening stuff in there. For instance, we are big Cheezit fans, buy the big box at Sam's. Scanned it and found out they use an additive called TBHQ in it. It's a petroleum derivative. A healthy alternative is Gold Fish which we like as well. #winning

Went over my calorie limit for the 1st time yesterday by about 400. I know it's not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, but it still aggrivating

Played some pickup basketball for about 2 hours last night. I have an in at a high school gym for a private game, but next Wednesday is our last night. It's a bummer because currently that is about the only exercise I get, and secondly, I can finally go a few games in a row without feeling complete over the hill and out of shape.

I need to find another exercise outlet. I've tried running, lift weights, etc., but I never really enjoy exercise unless I can get my competitive juices flow. Trying to beat my last time out, or lift more than last time doesn't do it for me. :(

Feakin McDonalds. I am on the road today for business appointments. Left the house without eating breakfast. So, I stopped for McDonalds. Not the best choice I know. I got the 2 sausage burrito breakfast with a hash brown and water. 1060 calories for that. Jesus! My daily limit is 1600. To top it off, today is my "off" day from running. I am going to be at least 500 over today. It is what it is but i am pretty sure i am done with the sausage burrito breakfast.

A regular egg mcmuffin sandwich is only 330 or so and a yogurt parfait is like 150.

I encourage all of you to Google healthy choices [your favorite fast food chain here] and get it in your head what is healthy and what is not. I typically forget until I'm in line and then it's too late. Most all of them have something reasonably healthy on the menu. In McD's case I recently discovered their chicken bacon ranch salad for dinner. Get a nice grilled chicken breast cut up and with the packet of dressing it's 400 calories. Sweet deal for a filling dinner option on the road.

Why didnt you punch into myfitnesspal to see how many calories it was before you went to McDonalds? There were no quick delis or bagel shops you couldve went to to get an egg white omelet or something? Planning ahead is very important. You need to dedicate yourself to planning your meals just like you do your business appointments. Im sorry to sound harsh but its the only way its gonna work.

I know, I know. I should have checked. Just a momentary slip. I was 500 calories under yesterday so the week will balance out overall just fine for me. Just one of those things. Good tip on the googling healthy meals. I need to have some ideas in my head of what is okay to get before i get somewhere.

You can only do this if you have a smart phone, wifi, and Netflix or Hulu, but I really enjoy watching some tv shows that I have missed out on since I don't have cable/satellite. So when I do the treadmill(I would rather be on the trails) or elliptical with my girlfriend at the gym, I get to catch up on stuff like firefly and breaking bad. The time flys by.

Double double, protein style, no spread, and with grilled onions is my go to for when I need a burger fix. Lots of protein, a decent amount of veggies and something like 430 calories. Add the bun and it's near 600.

I have tried that, but it doesn't work for me. TV is a relaxing hobby. I didn't get into the multi tasking. If I'm going to waste time watching TV, I'm going to kick back in the reclyner while I do it. Plus, I ditched out treadmill when we moved last year. I still have a bowflex, so I have that option (with a Netflix hooked up TV in the same room), but I'm too easily distracted by lifting to stay on task. I don't mind running, but I rarely get any daylight hours to run, and don't particularly like running at night.Long story short, I am good at finding excuses NOT to work out.

Why an egg white omelette? The whole egg yolk is bad thing is way outdated thinking.

One egg yolk fine. How many eggs are in an omelette? People are trying to lose weight in here by cutting calories. Egg yolks have alot of calories. Now multiple that by 4 (however many are in an omelette) and compare those calories to that in 4 egg whites.

I have 2 eggs every morning witt some low(er) fat sausage and a bit of cheese (1 oz cheddar). It's around 400 calories, is chocked full of great nutrients and keeps me well satisfied until lunch. If you want to dump the calories dump the bagel, not the egg yolk

good for youwho said anything about a bagel? I said have an egg white omelette. Compare the calories & cholesterol of a 4 egg white omelette vs a 4 whole egg omelette then get back to me. Both keep you full.

egg yolks have very good fats that help to keep you full. An egg is only about 70 calories. Also, the cholesterol in egg yolk is not the bad kind. Whether your eating egg whites or egg yolks, as long as you keep the calories low your good. I personally do 4 hard boiled eggs for breakfast. 280 calories and very filling. but when im traveling i tend to do an egg while omlette with lots of veggies and it usually comes out to about the same calories. To each is own.

Who the hell eats a 4 egg omellette? That 2 egg with yolk omelette is going to give you far more nutrition. The 4 egg white omelette has, what, 60 calories considering just the egg whites with little nutrition. What's the point? The only reason to go with 4 egg whites is if you still believe that dietary cholesterol and saturated fat are bad with you despite no evidence to support that outdated misconception or you are trying to keep you breakfast under 100 calories because you are also working under the non-fact based misconception that you need to eat multiple small meals all day along to "keep your metabolism going".

:kicksrock:

I don't like this feeling.

I am working out. Pounds are peeling away and I am easily beating my calorie goal and doing my best to eat two or more times a day.

I rarely feel hungry anymore but I also never feel full.

I used to look forward to my one meal dinner like a terrorist looks forward to 40 virgins after he dies. Now I spend more time measuring than I do enjoying the food I cook.

That part of the reason why some people advocate a cheat day every once in a while, or even once per week. It won't torpedo your goals and let's you enjoy yourself with abandon every so often.

I have a cheat meal every Saturday night. That's also the only night I get drunk.

Is there something you guys recommend I drink?

If I'm relegated to Ultra and its ilk, I think I'll just do water. :(

Have you ever eaten at La Hacienda de Los Barrios?Mexican food and addicting margaritas... I can EASILY torpedo an entire week in one meal.

Well - I just finished up dinner - an omelet. I am 89 calories over for the day. Will need a mid evening snack. Probably some yogurt. So, I will end up about 200 calories over. Not too bad considering my freaking breakfast was 1000 calories of my day.

Tossed some baseball for about 20 minutes with my son. MFP says that helps. Will do some push ups and sit ups as well. :smallrecovery

How does MFP make money? Everything appears to be free and I don't see advertisement on the app.

The code base is way too clean for this to be a labor of love for a single person.
