Hit a trade the you can easily learn and move up in. Find a decent restaurant. You can work there as a grunt to start but turnover is usually high and you can move up quickly if you want to learn and do your job well. Plus they might feed you.
ive actually thought of working in food prep.........i enjoy cooking i have no formal training though and all ads i see are for people with years of experience in the business
You have to knock on doors and sometimes you even have to kick them open. They usually don't open for you. Go out and give it a shot. Seem enthusiastic, sincere, and a little desperate. Trust me, at every restuarant you go to there will be at least some people the current manager is not happy with. If you get a shot, make the most of it. Good luck.
where thats where social phobia hurts..........im too nervous to go around asking everywhere i can which is why im only comfortable responding to adsthats why ive finally made the decision to seek help i just hope i have enough time for some medication to stabilize me.........if the shrink even gives it to me right away
Call them on the friggin phone. You call 100 places and tell them you are looking to get into the field and are willing to work your way up from the bottom you will have at least 5 interviews easy.

I've had to endure a few of those moments in my life so far. They ain't fun!

Two things:

1. Where do you live?

2. Are you familiar with tensile structures?
i live in bronx nycand no im not familiar with tensile structures as any more than a laymen

my only real skill is artwork if anyone wants to see............i just dont think im good enough to make a living from it
NYC - not exactly ideal for those with social phobias and no money. How about moving to a cheaper less populated place for starters?
how can i move with lint in my pocket? and this computer and internet service belongs to my grandmother by the way guys
Can you live with her?

Look into apprentice linemen jobs at utility companies. I really know nothing about them, except it pays well (80k range) and a gentlemen I know who works for a utility company said they need them badly.

So your grandma lets you use her internet access but wont take you in? How many grandma's even use the internet?

Join meals on wheels as a volunteer. Find some old lady you could convince you are a long lost grandson and offer to pay for a room, tell her you'll pay when you get a job.

so here i am......24 and i dont know how to maintain any sort of lifeive been unemployed for 4 months and im behind over a thousand on my rent. my only work experience is in painting, construction and HVAC and they are all dead industries right now it appears where i livethe landlord wants me out......ive begged and borrowed all i can over the past few monthsif i have to leave i have nowhere to go...nobody in my family is willing to take me in..not even either of my parentswhats the next step? where do i go from here?i just dont see any answersany suggestions? right now it looks like it would be better to no longer exist
Well, it's a bit late to start asking these kinds of questions but as others have already stated.... there are always jobs to be found. There is no shame in taking a job as a janitor, at McDonald's, etc., but do something. Grocery stores are always hiring as are bars and eateries. No matter how menial you consider the job, do it well. You may be able to work two or more of these kinds of jobs at the same time to make ends meet. You're not looking for a career here, but you may end up finding one by accident. As for your living situation, you don't have any friends that you could crash with for a short time until you can make enough money to afford your own place again? Or potential roommates to share the rent/bills with?
both of my friends are married and live in tiny apartments......and i myself live in a one room studio thats about the size of 6 closets......so i dont know how i could have a roomate

any suggestions? right now it looks like it would be better to no longer exist
..... I wish he had told someone, even someone on an anonymous help line, what he was feeling/thinking. Hang in there man.
I meant to add, I think it's great that you've opened up this dialogue in the FFA - I'm just not sure how confident I am in our collective ability to offer the kind of help you might really need. If we can, more power to the FFA!!!

So your grandma lets you use her internet access but wont take you in? How many grandma's even use the internet?
my grandmother uses it for ebay of items she gets at garage sales........and my grandmother is the only person who would take me in except she lives with my aunt who hates my guts because shes super religious and im notonly reason i can use the computer right now is because shes away for the week

how about the 32 yr old that propositioned you?

Dude, you have skills, right? Painting, construction, HVAC? Anything else? List them all. What are else are you good at that someone would pay for?

OK, you need to solve the immediate problem first. Talk to you landlord immediately. He may want you out, but he may also be willing to let you stay if you were to paint your apartment (assuming he pays for materials) or do some light construction, etc.. If your rental mkt is as bad as most others then he'd be foolish to boot someone who could a) improve this apt (and possibly others he owns) b) could be a productive tenant in short order c) would pay back what is owed in rent (if he boots you there's no way he can expect to see the $1k you owe.

Now, how about a roomate to defray costs?

Once you have the apt issues settled (and it shouldn't take too long) you can then focus on getting a job. Word to the wise...the days are for job seeking...night are for working on the apt. Do not spend all day painting and all night watching TV and then wonder why you can't find a job.

As for the food...there are likely many local food pantries or other charitable institutions that can help you out here. Don't be ashamed of your situation...don't be so prideful that you are afraid to ask for help.

As always, just my two cents.

Good luck.

Seriously, why aren't you applying to stock shelves at grocery stores at night? You won't see many or all customers, pay is pretty good, it's not a skilled job and grocery stores aren't going anywhere.

Fair enough. Are you willing to travel? Can you drive a manlift? Lull? If so, I might be able to help.

And for what it's worth, I'm also broke in NYC.

As far as what's going on inside your mind, I can also point you in the right direction to places that'll help out here in the city.

Almost every restaurant is always in need of a dishwasher. Its not glamorous, its most likely minimum wage, but it will probably be enough to help you tread water for now...experience is rarely needed, and you can do 2 things once youre in:

1) Volunteer to work overtime if they allow it. Time and a half adds up quick. As long as you show up on time for your shifts, and are a good worker, its a fairly secure job with a chance to move up.

2) Help the cooks in any way you can with prep, etc...its easy to learn, and most restaurants have strict portion control and recipes, and you would basically be following simple instructions. If management sees are motivated and want to move up, they might let you split time between washing dishes and prep cooking, and might even promote you to full time prep cook. Once youre there, start helping the line or station cooks whenever you can, and then you might be able to move up another notch. All the while you will be gaining experience, and may then venture out and look for a cook job that pays better.

One perk of being a cook is waitresses like to have teh secks with cooks. Even average looking cooks. Ive seen it many many times. Alot of young single girls wait tables.

Dishwashing is one of those jobs just about anyone can get -- from high school students looking for their first job, to senior citizens and retirees looking for something to keep them busy and make a little extra cash.

If nothing else, you can do this and keep looking for work with better pay.

i have applied at a couple in the area........one is actually run by my sisters friend but he said they just dont need anyone.....another place actually promised me a job in 2 weeks and when i showed up when they told me to last month they told me they couldnt put me on after all

Sorry dude but I found this funny.

my grandmother uses it for ebay of items she gets at garage sales....
On a more serious note, another thing you can do is offer to help her with her ebay venture in your spare time, or do the same thing yourself. Its not like youre gonna knock your granny out of business. It can be a little extra cash on the side, and every little bit helps.

Anyway you can parlay your skills (HVAC, painting etc) into getting a break on rent? Maybe look for a superintendent or maintenance job in an apartment building or something like that.

Only two stores in the Bronx, eh? Huh.Dude, step your game up.

And while your at it, read some narratives of the young men who grew up during the great depression. Get a sense of the hardships THEY endured. It'll make your problems look like a pimple on a giant's butt. At the very least, I hope it inspires you to try harder than you're trying now.

Sounds like you should get a job in IT where you don't have to work with people. Like I said earlier, go back to school. You're going to be a loser the rest of your life if you continue down the path you've been on.

You should start contacting temporary services. Here are some that came up at yahoo yellow pages in Bronx, NY. You can usually start immediately with these places. They will place you in some sort of warehouse employment most likely.

Plenty of people get jobs that they don't have many skills in and are able to make rent. If all of us waiting until a job came along that pays well, matches our exact skill-set, is in our home city, allows us to be socially comfortable, etc, etc... we'd be posting an awful lot on here through the weekdays due to being unemployed. I'm not trying to be harsh, but these are not the times to be picky.

Like others have said, take a crappy job that nobody else wants... start paying off your debts... and in the mean time, keep applying for better jobs until you land in one that you can stand.

You might be surprised and find that you actually are quite proud of yourself for banging out a 40 hour week and cashing a paycheck, even if its from McDonalds.

You could do this and write a book about it, publish it, and make boatloads.

If you sell plasma, they will give you  and give you something to eat. This is how my BIL built his vast CD collection back in college.
