This letter is to inform you about a lockdown that we had this afternoon. Our school is committed to the safety and education of all our students. We also want to clearly
communicate with parents about safety issues when they arise.
Today, at approximately 1:58pm, Mill Valley Police (MVPD) contacted us to place our campus on lockdown after receiving reports of a suspicious person potentially in possession of a firearm near the Tam High campus.
Consistent with the emergency procedures we practice at least twice per year, our lockdown procedures were initiated and followed. Teachers and staff gathered all students into their rooms, while administrators and school security personnel gathered students who were in hallways or common areas and made sure they were taken to a safe place.
With all students and staff safely locked down, police and administrators worked together to gather information and assess the threat. After approximately 90 minutes, it was confirmed that there was no threat to student safety and the lockdown was lifted. At this time, we have no further information regarding the situation. We will continue to collaborate with our law enforcement partners, to whom we are grateful for their swift response.
I am extremely proud of the staff and students who followed our lockdown procedures, as instructed. Our lockdown procedures were developed with the assistance of local police and fire officials as recommended by the United States Departments of Education and Homeland Security.
Sometimes, lockdown situations can frighten students and generate rumors in the community. Please discuss this situation with your student and let us know if follow-up is needed at school. Counselors and Wellness staff are available for any student who needs a place to check in and talk about their experience.
