Carolina Panthers linebacker Na'il Diggs is fast becoming an expert on injuries to the medial collateral ligament.
In the past year, Diggs has suffered three such injuries to the knee and he's developed the ability to feel the severity right away.
He said Sunday the sprained right MCL he suffered in the exhibition Thursday night against Miami is minor. He's got some credentials to make that diagnosis.
As a member of the Green Bay Packers last season, he missed four games after suffering a sprained MCL against the Panthers. He also missed the first two games of last season after a sprained MCL in training camp.
As Diggs sat on the sideline with a bag of ice on his knee during the Miami game, he said he realized this injury wasn't as serious.
"I knew just from the feeling that it wasn't as bad," he said. "I knew right away last year what had happened. The other night was completely different. It was just a different feel all on its own."
Diggs did not practice Sunday, but the team is listing him as day-to-day. It's unlikely he will play in the exhibition finale Thursday at Pittsburgh, but he said he believes he can be ready for the Sept. 10 regular-season opener against Atlanta.
Keith Adams and James Anderson worked behind Diggs on the weak side throughout training camp, but the Panthers also might consider using Chris Draft at that spot if it appears the injury could cause Diggs to miss time in the regular season.
