Naples and Sardinia? (1 Viewer)

Probably heading to Naples and Sardinia with the kids in June for a week plus.

Will likely be in Positano to start, see Pompeii and not sure what else. Then head to Sardinia.

I went to Naples for a couple days as a kid, but all I remember was Pompeii and the worst traffic jam in Naples proper I've ever seen.

Anybody spent time down there in either area? Recommendations for what to do and see, where to stay, etc will be much appreciated.

I can’t comment on Sardinia but we stayed 4 nights in Sorrento while we were on our trip to Italy 3 years ago with our two daughters. We also were there in June.

The Pompeii tour and hiking Vesuvius was awesome.

The National Archeological Museum in Naples is quite good and worth seeing.

We rented a boat out of Sorrento to Capri. Beautiful day on the Mediterranean, swimming off the boat, cliff jumping, drinking wine and beer. It was one of my favorite days of the entire Italy trip. Pure relaxation.

Also rented a beach space for a day. We took a 45 minute bus ride from Sorrento to Meta, a gorgeous beach on that north side of the peninsula.

Have a great trip!

I really enjoyed Pompeii last year. They’re making new discoveries all the time.

Capri boat tour is pretty fun: Blue Grotto and Faraglioni Rocks. I spent a couple of nights in Capri and think that was better than just visiting for a day. Pretty jammed during the day, but pretty chill at night (reminded me of Venice in that way).

Thanks all- this is already great info.

Kids have never been to Italy- originally I wanted to do Rome/Florence, wife wanted Rome/Sardinia (also good for me).

Flights to and especially hotels in Rome are crazily priced, especially for a family of 4 (need two rooms) and overbooked.

That promoted my wife to look at alternatives, which prompted Naples/Sardinia. Not cheap, but considerably less and more available than Rom unfortunately. I just have to let go of my kids HAVING to see Rome/Florence on their first trip. To me, It's like going to France for the first time and going to Marseilles and Corsica, but not Paris or anywhere else.

Lake Como and Bellagio was a fun day trip. If I had it to do over again I would have spent 2 more days in Venice and 2 less in Milan.

That's the complete other end of the boot. Not a day trip.

High speed rail is a wonderful thing

Still not a day trip... Even if Como is a favorite spot of mine from my Milan days, where it was actually a day trip. Also not going to go to Venice, Switzerland, Serbia, Croatia, Estonia, Spain, Africa or France.

My family of 5 stayed in Monechiaro in June 2023 for 4 nights. Quiet little town with a couple of restaurants and a couple of smaill convenient stores. The AirBnB we stayed at was great. We had a private pool that overlooked the Gulf of Naples, the owner of the AirBnb made a wonderful breakfast for us every day.

Buuuuut, while only being a short driveable distance from Sorrento (approx 5 miles/8 km), because of traffic (tourist busses and Vespa scooters) it was usually an hour ride into Sorrento. Plus, like I mentioned above, we are a family of 5, so we needed transportation that could accommodate all of us, which meant a van or multiple vehicles, which meant lots of money. And being an hour away, most taxi companies/drivers didn't want to leave Sorrento proper where they could make more money with frequent trips rather than one ride that took 2 hours. We missed our non-refundable ferry ride to Ischia because of not being able to get a taxi company to pick us up in time.

Lesson: if you can, rent a vehicle while down in that area.

We left Milan on a high speed rail day trip to the lake Como region. While in Italy we were in Rome, Pompeii, Florence, Milan, Venice, Sienna, San Gimignano, Lake Como, Bellagio, Pisa, and I’m sure I’m forgetting something. We had at least one day trip from every city we stayed at, except Venice. So that would mean from Rome, Florence and Milan. I probably enjoyed Venice the most, but most of it was great and memorable. If I had to drop one it would have been Pisa. It seemed so commercial and downright boring. Perhaps because it was such a long day.

That sounds like an amazing trip! That was what I envisioned for us- but time, prices and our desire to not be running around and instead spend more immersive time in a couple spots dictates this one.

And again- we won't be up north, the way you were. Will spend our time in the South.

One thing I saw as very unattractive in Italy was too much tag graffiti. Seemed like pollution to me. Even an electrical box in the countryside wasn’t safe.

It did make me search how long a high speed train ride from Naples to Como would take, and Google says minimum of a little over 5 hours. So, round trip for the day would take over 10 hours, not including boarding, etc. Basically would have time for a Chevy Chase Grand Canyon look-see and have to get back on the train back to do it as a day trip.

Yeah, from Milan it wasn’t that long of a trip. If memory serves less than two hours.

 that was the exact same image I had

Only time to Naples was to catch a flight home to US. But Naples looked kind of run down. amalfi coast is amazing including Positano, you can hire drivers to take you to the several towns on Amalfi coast. Capri and blue grotto are excellent, including chair lift on Capri. You can get private boat ride around Capri (a few hundred dollars 7 years ago) and includes blue grotto. You can do day trip via train to Rome from Naples. You can see quite a bit of Rome in a day walking/taxi. Every block seems to have gelato, wine cafe, pizza. I would consider Colosseum and Pantheon. I would not consider Pisa or Cinque Terra which farther up the coast quite a bit.

One thing I saw as very unattractive in Italy was too much tag graffiti. Seemed like pollution to me. Even an electrical box in the countryside wasn’t safe.
We spent 3 weeks in Italy 7 years ago (Venice, Florence,Chianti,Rome and Amalfi Coast) and saw no graffiti except a little in Rome. Absolutely our favorite trip. Only downside was driving thru Naples, it looked kind of dirty/run down.

Plenty everywhere I went. Good for you that you didn’t notice. I’m not making this stuff up. Rome, Milan Floerence, all along the countryside, overpasses, anywhere where there was space not already marked up was fair game.

Where I noticed lots of it was taking train from Paris to Versailles!

Also, we didn't spend much time in Naples. It was the end of the TrenItalia's line from Rome to Naples. Once we got off the train, I had private transportation waiting for us to take us to Montechiaro. The little bit of Naples that we did see was pretty run down.

Yeah.. I was there with my parents 45 years ago. After seeing a lot of other Italian cities, it did nothing or any of us. We'll fly in do like you did- beeline somewhere else.

not much to see in italy. i’d try tunisia or the seychelles.
Day trips!
but really, sardinia is not exactly a tourist hot spot. cagliari is a nice city, but sardegna is really the place that wealthier italians go to vacation during ferragosto. on a trip to italy, not sure it would be on my list. if i’m going to amalfi i’m not staying in naples. naples is rough. even the napolitani don’t want to drive there. i’ve seen nice things about procida.

Last year we went on a trip to London, Vienna, Budapest and Rome. Rome was the worst as far as graffiti but all the cities had a serious problem with it, especially just outside of the main core of the city. That was like our 5th time in Rome and I never saw it so bad before.

americans see graffiti and have been trained to treat graffiti as eyesores and gang tagging for the most part. it is conflated with urban decay and blight. i don’t much like it in rome, but it is a cultural thing…..a sign of expression and viewed differently by locals.

my wife has been all-in about going to Sardinia- looks beautiful, tbh. I was working on some projects in Morocco (never got to visit) and at some point mis-hit the cursor on google maps and found Lampedusa- one of a couple Italian islands between italy and tunisia... that's when I became interested in the southern islands.

I've been through Italy- lived in Milan for a bit in my youth, and also got to travel its length on an amazing trip with my parents when I was a child. Naples is only about having an airport with direct flights from NYC- we wont stay there. Better than Brindisi, tbh. I never got to see the Amalfi coast unfortunately, along with many other parts of the country, including any of those islands.

I've been hanging on and disappointed that the kids won't get to see Rome/Florence this trip- not sure if/when we'll be able to go back as a family. But the reality is- there's still a LOT to see where we're planning on going, and it should be great.

I guess that's the problem. They've learned to accept it.

coming from NYC, graffiti isn't some we'll obsess on.

even the acropolis in athens has a bunch... freaking Lord Byron scratched his name all over europe.

you could always frecciarossa from naples to rome for a day trip.

We were in Naples 2 years ago. We went to Herculaneum (smaller version of Pompeii) and did an underground tour (highly recommended).
The day we were there, Naples was trying to clinch their first Italian Soccer championship in many years that day and everything was decorated in team colors (light blue).
It was very fun.
