Naples and Sardinia? (1 Viewer)

We were in Naples 2 years ago. We went to Herculaneum (smaller version of Pompeii) and did an underground tour (highly recommended).
The day we were there, Naples was trying to clinch their first Italian Soccer championship in many years that day and everything was decorated in team colors (light blue).
It was very fun.
today also has naples going for the scaduto. they are 1 up on inter, both play tonite.
ah yes, the ol' 23 scaduto

for some reason I thought the games were this Sunday.
season ends sunday
Ok, things are rounding out. Capri and Pompei tours booked.

One bit trying to figure out- well likely take the train to somewhere on or near the Amalfi coast... Where? Positano? Sorrento? Somewhere else?

From there trying to decide what to do and see. Boat tour of Amalfi coast? Driving tour of the coast (floppinha gets car sick)? Is it best seen by boat or by land? Recommended places to see and things to do?

We're renting a car on Sardinia and will explore. Anything specific in Sardinia we should see?

If johnny mentions Como again I will stab a *****
If you are going to the Almafi coast, make sure to get up to Ravello, It's a higher up town with incredible views.

We took the train to Salerno and took the sita bus to amalfi where we were staying. The sita bus is very practical and goes everywhere but I wouldn’t recommend it for sight seeing or for the car sick prone. The ferry from positano to amalfi is scenic but probably wouldn’t blow you away. We really enjoyed ravello. Artsy, beautiful, fantastic views. The restaurant in positano is da Vincenzo. No view, but we had an amazing lunch there. Getting beach chairs might be a fun activity. I tipped the dude that I paid for our chairs and he put us in the 2nd row and our server was actually attentive. Fun and different day at the beach. DM me your number if you want some pics of these places.

Also, lake como is allegedly beautiful.

Enjoy the trip, Flops.

I will say, riding a public bus in Naples in July was a novel experience in togetherness + scents that wasn't wholly prepared for. Lots of armpits.

Capri was stunningly beautiful and I'm glad I spent the money to stay for 2 nights there. Night time limoncello was noice.

My mother's family hails from Puglia so I've actually spent more time on the other side of the boot. Way less touristy but good ocean life. There was an article in NYT about tourism growing in Bari and changing the city in good and bad ways.

My kid is in the air as we speak. She’s doing London, Paris, Rome, Sicily. First time to Europe. Boyfriend has family in Sicily. Super excited for her

Very cool. For many Americans, the first time visiting Europe on vacation is pretty special. I hope she has a great trip.

Landed in Naples this am on zero sleep.

Our hotel is lovely, right across the street from Pompeii with views of Vesuvius. Checked in, changed into shorts- baking hot here- got a late breakfast at the hotel (surprisingly good buffet) and headed over to the ruins.

We hired a guide- who was amazing, but sadly wasted on us. We're fried, so his historical and mythological minutiae soon turned into internal monologues of- where is some shade, where is something cold to drink. Still amazing, and hopefully the kids appreciated it.

Tomorrow is boat trip to Capri. Monday is boat tour of Amalfi coast (decided against car due to traffic and car-sickness concerns). Leave for Sardinia on Tuesday.

Soooooooooo pumped to be back in Italy.

Holy hell.. Capri is otherworldly.

I've seen and done some things around islands... But wow, this place.

Halfway into our boat tour, now having lunch.
One of my favorite memories from my visit to Capri was renting a small boat and exploring around the island, simply amazing. Enjoy!!!

Still going to Sardinia? Pretty sure golf is not your jam but I stayed at a resort next to Pevero GC (Robert Trent Jones design.) Beautiful spot to relax, enjoyed it slightly less than Palma de Mallorca or Kefalonia but definitely a charming place. Not a lot of historical stuff and not much by way of nightlife / entertainment, but you’re on a Mediterranean beach in June, what’s there to complain about?

You’re creating great memories this week that will last the entire lifetime of your kids. Chapeau, Flop.

Sardinia, yes. Golf no. Can't wait

Just finishing lunch at cafe de Ciro.. on to the rest of the boat tour (we got out of castigliamsre) including a view of casa malaparte and home to crash out.

I'm sure it would be incredible just taking the ferry in and seeing the island by car/bus... But having just circumnavigating it by small boat- I can't imagine NOT seeing this place without doing it. No hyperbole, and again- I've been fortunate to do a lot of island traveling in my life- Capri is absolutely unique and amazing.

Got to Sardinia yesterday... Hotel is fantastic with pool and beach (in Chia).

At spiaggia Su Giudeu today... Absolutely unreal beach and especially water (flat, crystal clear and shallow) in beautiful cove with pinkish sand. Everything we've done has exceeded my middle aged jaded expectations by a ton. My wife nailed every part of this so far.

Did another boat tour, this time of the lower south east coast nearish our hotel.

Another baking day, another trip where every turn into a new cove was a new jaw dropping adventure of glass clear water and dramatic coastline.

We didn't get to experience a lot of culture other than eating out (and tbh, sardinian cuisine didn't jump out at us)- will have to save that for another trip. But damn... The water and coastline is epic. Hotel was really nice too.

In Barcelona starting today after a short flight over. Had been here once before- saw all the Gaudi, la ramblas and Barcelona pavilion. Hotel is near the gothic quarter and my son and I walked around most of the day (before his HS friend arrived- he's staying with her and other friends at nearby Airbnb). Can't believe I didn't see the gothic quarter last time... Just amazing. And what a beautiful city.

My son and I brought our own squirt guns and spent the day in shootouts with the protesters. Kidding. No protestors.

Amazing last day to myself, with my son off with his friends and my wife and daughter in London (daughter doing an art program at St Martins).

Took the metro to Mies van de Rohe's masterpiece Barelona Pavilion in the arts district. As stunning as I remember.. but again, cooking hot today. Had to hide out in the gift shop for a bit to let my phone cool off and figure out next steps.

Decided to go to nearby Joan Miro foundation/Museum- itself a really cool piece of early 1970s brutalist architecture up on a hill in a park with other museums. Loved seeing so much Miro and the building (eta... DIDN'T ) disappoint. Also got out of the sun for a while for lunch.

Base of that hill was a subway stop and really cool, seemingly less touristy neighborhood, taking me to Gaudis Casa Milla by metro.

I was cooked by the time I got there, and I'd seen it before...but still inspiring and beautiful. My phone died just as I left, so I stumbled blind towards where I thought my hotel was (memory of the map in my head). After a bit, I stopped for some ice cream and decided I was lost...asked for directions to the major road my hotel was on. They pointed me that way...and I had somehow willed myself around the corner from the hotel!

Everywhere in this city is just stunning- architecturally especially, but also the overall vibe. Amazing place I'd love to explore a lot more. Sad to hear back to NYC tomorrow.

Capri boat tour is pretty fun: Blue Grotto and Faraglioni Rocks. I spent a couple of nights in Capri and think that was better than just visiting for a day. Pretty jammed during the day, but pretty chill at night (reminded me of Venice in that way).
Lake Como and Bellagio was a fun day trip. If I had it to do over again I would have spent 2 more days in Venice and 2 less in Milan.
That's the complete other end of the boot. Not a day trip.
High speed rail is a wonderful thing
Still not a day trip... Even if Como is a favorite spot of mine from my Milan days, where it was actually a day trip. Also not going to go to Venice, Switzerland, Serbia, Croatia, Estonia, Spain, Africa or France.
We left Milan on a high speed rail day trip to the lake Como region. While in Italy we were in Rome, Pompeii, Florence, Milan, Venice, Sienna, San Gimignano, Lake Como, Bellagio, Pisa, and I’m sure I’m forgetting something. We had at least one day trip from every city we stayed at, except Venice. So that would mean from Rome, Florence and Milan. I probably enjoyed Venice the most, but most of it was great and memorable. If I had to drop one it would have been Pisa. It seemed so commercial and downright boring. Perhaps because it was such a long day.
how long was your trip?

Sounds like an amazing trip. I'd love to get your top picks for each location. Oldest wants to go there for spring break next year, so i need to start booking things if not already too late

Slightly over two weeks I believe.

Flight was delayed so I got an extra hour wandering around the Borne district near my hotel this morning... I'm still amazed at the city.

But now back in rush hour traffic in NYC trying to go get home.
