*NBA THREAD* Abe will be missed (1 Viewer)

I'll take the over on 20 wins.
Really? Man this seems like an 18 win team to me. Who is going to score here?
You have to be really, really bad to win fewer than 20. LAL and UTA won 27 and 25 games respectively, last year, with terrible rosters.
:goodposting:

People always overplay how bad a team will be. I remember Simmons and Joe House declaring Philly under 16.5 or something like that last season as their lock of the year, talking about how they might challenge that 9-73 mark. Philly had 12 wins by the first week of January, needed a historic losing streak to even come within shouting distance of their preseason over/under mark.

I just don't like this move by Cleveland. But then, I'm primarily an NBA playoffs guy, not a guy who sits around and watches a lot of regular season basketball....so I haven't seen Love play much.
I'm not a fan of the deal either. Love and Irving miss too many games.
Love had one injury plagued season with the broken hand...he played 73 of 82 games in 2010-11, all 55 games in 2011-12, and 77 of 82 games last year.
There were 66 games in 2011-12 and 2009-2010 he played 60 games.

Two of the seasons where he missed 10-ish games, he was shut down for 7-8 at the end of the year with nothing on the line but draft position.

I'm not sure id call the cavs the overwhelming favorites in the east. Chicago would be my pick.
Who is your pick to come out of the West Abe?
It's obviously quite early but I think the moves OKC made are really strong. Wait, no, that isn't right. IMO, OKC has done everything short of telling KD, "we aren't interested in having you stick around here in a couple years." Just awful awful effort by that front office in recent years.

Hard to pick against the Spurs but that's a chalk selection which is never any fun. I actually think that the Mavericks are being overlooked a bit as well and I hope the Rockets continue to improve as their chemistry comes together. Gun to my head...

And there it is, from Woj:

The Minnesota Timberwolves have reached an agreement in principle to send All-Star forward Kevin Love to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett and a protected 2015 first-round draft pick, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Cleveland is making the deal with Minnesota with a firm agreement Love will opt out of his contract in 2015 and re-sign with the Cavaliers on a five-year, $120 million-plus contract extension, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

The deal cannot be finalized until Aug. 23, because Wiggins, the No. 1 overall pick, cannot be traded until one month following the signing of his rookie contract. The two teams have agreed to the deal, but neither would have recourse if the other decided to pull out of the arrangement before it can be formally completed this month. No third team is involved in the Cavaliers-Timberwolves trade agreement.

The precise deal terms have been agreed upon for weeks, but the teams and Love plan to stay silent about the particulars until the trade is announced in 16 days, sources told Yahoo Sports.

Love will join superstar LeBron James and Kyrie Irving to create the most devastating trio in the NBA and will instantly make the Cavaliers frontrunners to win an NBA championship.

Part of the Cavaliers' motivation in making the deal for Love was a belief Love would have ended up with the rival Chicago Bulls in a trade and created a significant obstacle in the Eastern Conference, sources said. Cleveland wouldn't have had the salary-cap space to sign Love next summer and could have only obtained him through the trade with Minnesota in a deal now.

Wiggins, the No. 1 pick in the 2014 NBA draft, is the centerpiece of the package for Minnesota. The Timberwolves see superstar potential in the forward out of Kansas. Bennett, the No. 1 pick in the 2013 draft, has shown signs of progress after a difficult start to his rookie season.

The T'wolves had hopes of unloading contracts in a Love deal, but that won't be happening. Minnesota still has a goal of freeing itself of J.J. Barea, Luc Mbah a Moute and Alexey Shved, league sources said.

Love informed the Timberwolves he will not return to the team after opting out of his contract next summer, and pushed them to make a trade for him before the start of this coming season.

Love, 25, is a three-time NBA All-Star. He averaged 26 points and 12.5 rebounds for the Timberwolves last season. For his career, he's averaged 19 points and 12.2 rebounds.
Unbelievable haul for Minnesota.
Just as great for Cleveland IMO. Love is very under-appreciated on this board.

This ensures Cleveland should be in the NBA Finals for the next few years at minimum.
Yep. Basically Wolves get to try and rebuild through Wiggins and a late first round pick and the dream that Bennett becomes useful. I'm happy in that's about as good as we can do, but it makes me chuckle to see the "unbelievable haul" comments.

Now excuse me while I get on the WIGGINS HYPE TRAIN

A lot of guys who were slightly better than the Wolves without Love. Without Love on the court last year, the Wolves had 101 oRtg; Utah was 103. Without Love, the Wolves has an eFG% of .458. Utah was at .484. I could go on, but it is safe to say that the Jazz where better last season than the Wolves - Love.

I think both teams are happy. I wouldn't call it 'unbelievable'. They got a much better young asset than normally goes in these type of deals, but they normally involve multiple picks. For Cleveland to only give up 1 pick means they still have at least two firsts next year (or 3 if the pick is their own 2018). Plus not having to take back any bad contracts, and keeping Haywood's $10.5 expiring to use next year? Home run for the Cavs.
:goodposting:

Cavs will be fun to watch.

Yes, I'm sure the Timberwolves backups were not as good offensively as then Jazz's starters. That's not very interesting. (would be more interesting if you pulled their lineup data with the other 4 starters in it.) The Jazz top two guys in terms of FGA were worse offensively than Kevin Martin. And that team cleared 20 wins by a very comfortable margin. Can't find 2014/15 over unders yet, but the Wolves still have better odds to win the Western Conference than Utah/Sacramento, teams that will have over unders in the high 20's, so I'd be pretty surprised if the Wolves' final line came out as low as 20.

I don't think it's merely a dream that Bennett becomes useful. I'd be more surprised if he doesn't. Kind of semantics here I guess but he seems a good bet to be a solid rotation guy at a minimum.

Plus you know the commissioner will rig the lottery for the Wolves to get #1 next season since that's what they do when teams lose a superstar.

So the Cavs don't win the title, Lebron takes his ball and leaves, Love follows suit, and a team that actually had some stuff to build around is basically Kyrie Irving and nothing again. How many times can Lebron screw this franchise?

I hope you're right. If he's your 8th man or something like that for the next couple of years, that certainly lessens "THE HAUL".

So the Cavs don't win the title, Lebron takes his ball and leaves, Love follows suit, and a team that actually had some stuff to build around is basically Kyrie Irving and nothing again. How many times can Lebron screw this franchise?
Come on, you can do much better than "basically Kyrie and nothing".

Of course you can, that's why they'll blow when Lebron ditches them again for not being able to win a title as currently constructed.

LeBron James, Kevin Love & Kyrie Irving combined for 36.9 win shares last season, more than 11 entire NBA teams had.

Also a big fan of the "You've been so ignored, I'm going to keep talking about how much I've ignored you" schtick. This is how you know you're in someone's head.

Count me in the "blown away by the haul the Wolves got" camp. If Wiggins is indeed the thoroughbred he's been hyped to be, this is the best move they've made since taking a skinny HS teenager at #5 overall back in '95.

Far more going on behind the scenes than we know about, b/c on it's face, I have no idea why the Cavs don't wait and let this play out much longer to see what they have in Wiggins and a supposedly improved Bennett. Perhaps part of LeBron "coming home" was tied to Clev promising him Love.

I agree with you but I can definitely see the other side. They want a title ASAP and are willing to sacrifice some long-term potential and flexibility to maximize their chances at a title during the last three or four years of LeBron's prime. Makes sense.

Assuming Love was out the door at the end of the year, which appears to be the case, this is pretty much a best-case scenario for Minnesota. They are very lucky that Cleveland won the lottery.

brohans so i think it goes cleveland and chicago sort of the two best pick your winner then washington then i think you have charlotte and then after that a big traffic jam of the rusted out brooklyn jalopy and the knicks because i think phil ends up coatching it eventually and the hawks because they are normally just shooting for the six seed and maybe the bucks and celtics i think the bucks have a shot because they should actually be healthy hopefully and parker is probably going to be good and that guy with nine consonents in his name is supposedly looking a lot stronger this year so hey that is what the old swcer says take that to the bank bromigos

1. No cap room to sign Love after the season

2. East rival Bulls likely land Love is Cavs don't before the year anyway.

3. The earlier you get Love in house the more time they have to "gel" and get right before the playoffs.

Really, the smart move is to do exactly what they're doing and get Love now.

Wiggins has a ton of hype, it's true. But that's all it is at this point, They don't really lose anything else in this deal (Bennett is redundant with Love and they still have a load of picks)...still have more depth than the Heat ever had, more inside presence, more shooters and more players with upside.

I cant go through all of that. Just one question you might be able to help me with:

Would it be more benefitial in terms of win shares to be the #1 guy on a bad team or the #5 guy on a good team?

20 wins is going to be tough to reach, imo.

Excited to see what Rubio can do lobbing to Lavine and Wiggins though.

As I said to Frosty, next step is to somehow not give Rubio the max. Everyone knows it would be a terrible move, but I'm still scared they do it.
If Bledsoe isn't getting more than 4/48, I think that should set the ceiling/market for what Rubio will get.

well my bulls keeps on missing to land that 2nd superstar, looks like its time to now wait for Durant 2016.

the new Cavs team scares me but not as much as those heat teams.

congrats to cavs fans on a great ofseason

From a purely basketball standpoint, I can't wait to see Love throwing bombs off defensive rebounds to an open LeBron on the break.

I think it has more to do with Love being better right now than Wiggins ever will be, and nobody cares about that turd drafted #1 last year.
