NBA's experiment with extended All-Star break worked into '14-'15 schedule. For teams, minimum break between games is 8 days; some longer.
Yuck. That and the baseball ASB in July are the slowest weeks in the sports calendar. Why prolong it? If you're gonna make the season 4 or 5 days longer start to finish why not use that to reduce back to backs?
As a practical matter I don't think it's that bad. The level of play falls off as injuries mount. As for the current day, there are a crop of injured guys like Kobe , rose, and wade that the nba would like healthy for the playoffs. And so do fans. I'm cool with a couple extra days off.

There are a ton of back to backs though. I think I counted 20 for the Cavs. Makes the regular season even more meaningless.

Raptors sign Jordan Hamilton. Thoughts on him Kev?
He jumped right in making a difference for Houston when they acquired him but ended up buried on the bench by the end of the season. He had 24, 24, and 32 mpg in his first three games played with Houston and looked solid. Never broke 20 mpg the rest of the way.

Hes a decent player who I don't think has been given enough of a chance. I don't think he should be getting big minutes anywhere, but he seems like he should be a 4th wing that can hit jumpers. To ever get to that level he'll have to clean up his shot selection though, he reminded me very much JR Smith's shot selection without the talent. Its a good signing on a one year deal, but if he doesn't stick in Toronto, I think we'll have seen the last of him in the NBA. He's only 23, so if given the chance to succeed, I think he'll improve and be a helpful role player for you guys.

My stereotype was a hybrid of "Player Coach" and "Banks In A 3 To Win". Though I will say "Foul Guy" had the ability to turn me into "Rage Monster".

"Player Coach" spread across multiple sports. As the self-appointed defensive coordinator of my high school flag football team, I successfully installed the Cover 2 Zone. This was a nerdier accomplishment in its era since it predated Madden; I went to the library to look up play diagrams of football zone defenses in coaching magazines, reproduced them by hand, and made copies for everyone on the team. I didn't date much.

21 for the Hornets. 18 games in 31 days around March. 9 in 15 days / 15 in 23 days to finish the season.

DeMarcus Cousins hurt in practice today.

Team USA is on life support.
Hopefully this is it for this dumb tournament. Olympics every 4 years and that's it.
Nobody is forcing these guys to play. I guess you could argue that K/Colangelo are by not picking guys who don't play for the Olympic team. But that is his perogative and I imagine part of what made him successful. Even if some players change, I imagine the system is relatively the same. And even if the US stops, the rest of the world won't. Lot of things wrong with Larry Browns team but one of them was continuity.

Hey I'm excited about the basketball but these guys play super long stressful seasons. Seems ridiculous to put them through a month long training camp before their month long tournament that ends a few weeks before their camp starts.

The Olympics are the only tournament the world cares about (I know some people say this is the main event but the ratings and player participation begs to differ). This isn't soccer where the entire world turns its eyes to the World Cup.

It really is shocking to me actually that the owners ok this.

Kings sign Bhullar
If y'all haven't seen this guy play... he is ENORMOUS. On the NCAA court he looked like a bonus character you unlocked in a video game.
Watched him against San Diego St. last year. Guy has skills.

May have been able to play in the NBA 20-30 years ago when the game was slower, but I don't think he's fast enough for today's NBA. He makes George Muresan look like Usain Bolt.

It will be interesting to watch him develop under the veteran leadership and maturity of Cousins.

Yeah if you can wait 45 mins for him to get down the court into position he isn't bad. I'm not sure if his problem is that he's overweight or that he just isn't built to run. The Kings will probably put him in the D League to find out.

FIBA is trying to launch halfcourt three-on-three basketball as its own sport, like how two-on-two beach volleyball spun off from traditional volleyball. Maybe Bhullar's future is in 3x3.

The 1984 Draft

Very interesting documentary on the NBA Network. Four all-time players (Hakeem, Jordan, Barkley, Stockton), Rick Carlisle barely hanging on with the Celtics but using the opportunity to go into coaching; Mr. Irrelevant dying in the WTC on September 11th. A guy I had never heard of--Oscar Schmidt--who is the self-proclaimed greatest non-USA player, and whose dominance in the Pan-Am games prompted the NBA to use its players, and thus created the Dream Team.

I learned that Bobby Knight cut Barkley in favor of Jeff Turner for the Olympic Team, and that Leon Wood--10th pick--went on to become a top notch NBA referee.

Poor Sam Bowie. Seems like a decent guy but will forever be a punchline.

I still expect the Wolves to screw this up somehow
I'll be following the Wolves now, just to see what they do with Wiggins. I read a good opinion piece by a Minnesota sportswriter about how badly Minny bungled their handling of Kevin Love over the years - Wittman holding him back from shooting 3's, Rambis not playing him, not giving him a 5-year extension, but giving one to Rubio... the list goes on. (I always knew they drafted lousy, but I never followed them closely enough to learn the rest.) Anyway, it's sort of a similar story to the Cavs' first go-around with LeBron James. Lousy team to start with (of course), and a terrible draft history (Dajuan Wagner, Dasagana Diop, etc.) Had to dump Ricky Davis so he wouldn't be a bad influence on LeBron. Lost Boozer by tearing up his rookie contract so he could sign an extension, and he bolted as an unrestricted FA. Signed Larry Hughes to a monster contract that hamstrung them right up until LeBron left in 2010. We traded all of our draft picks trying to upgrade or unload a bunch of bad contracts. Looking back at that history, it's easy to understand why he left in the first place - Mo Williams was the best we could come up with for a secondary offensive threat, we were capped out, and we had no draft picks. I don't know how LeBron managed to win 60+ games with that squad.

Discussion I'm having locally - should Dante Cunningham face league punishment even though his charges were dropped? Silver took an unprecedented step to remove an owner - should he also start trying to clean up player's off court activity? Note: the current CBA does not allow him to punish players, so this is more of a question of if this is something that should be incorporated into the next CBA.

In general, I think NBA players are relatively clean (partially because the NBA has chosen not to care about marijuana), but there have been some dark moments that were all magically dropped before trial. These have all happened within the last five years:

Lance Stephenson threw his girlfriend down some stairs; charges dropped; no suspension

Jordan Hill choked his girlfriend; entered a plea bargain; no suspension.

Andray Blatche has a solicitation and sexual assault charge; charges dropped; no suspension

DeAndre Liggins assault with a deadly weapon and kidnapping; he's going to marry the victim - preparing to return to the NBA this season

Jared Sullinger assault charge dropped; no suspension

James Johnson beat up his wife, charges dropped; no suspension

Dante Cuningham arrested twice (choking assault and terroristic threats), charges dropped

I'm not getting much traction - the writer responses so far have been pretty much...charges dropped, nothing to see here. I just think there's too many of these cases that are conveniently dropped when the victim fails to appear in court or help the prosecution.
