*NBA THREAD* Abe will be missed (4 Viewers)

SA cannot convert on the misses or stops on OKC.

the problem with timmy being the only big and running these p n r's? he's drawn away from the basket and unable to rebound. there isn't anyone able or willing to get around the basket on their misses.

Wow the calls have gone all OKC. To bad the Spurs are having to play against 6! OKC is good enough they dont need the help!
Oh come on
I see you cant argue with facts.
I can be entertained by whining.. I guess the fans take after the team. Maybe if san antonio spent less time whining to the refs and more time going back to defend their season wouldn't be over. Take notes for 2013. The sun has set on San Antonio's run.... blow it up.

Please don't care me to him. tia.

Durant is the best scorer at his age since I've watched the NBA.

Just incredible.

Durant's already in the conversation for best player in the league. How much better will he be at 26 or 28? Seems like sky's the limit.

That OKC team is going to be scary good for a long time. They have most of their players locked in for at least the next two years. Congrats to them. They have a heck of a team.

Wouldn't surprise me. Timmy put up decent to good numbers this series but they were also pretty damn quiet. Splitter was supposed to help him inside but doesnt seem to be nearly as good as advertised.

Outside of their top 7, Popovich only played the rest a total of 6 minutes in this game.
The big thing that turned in this series is SAS's depth disappeared. All the good minutes and plays they got out of guys like Danny Green and Matt Bonner went away. Meanwhile, OKC's role players improved, especially once Brooks realized Derek Fisher was lying when he told him about the guaranteed playing time clause in his contract.
Can't complain about the minutes Fisher played in the last quarter.

I'm hoping some lovers of basketball here (like Ferris and others) will come in and comment about what we're watching here. I don't know enough to comment intelligently myself, except to say I get this is really special.
I try not to get too crazy about the home team winning Games 1 and 2 of a playoff series. It's not good for OKC that they've lost both games, but in the context of the series, SAS has just held serve and the real work starts on Thursday night.
Yeah, but do you trust that OKC can win 4 of the next 5 against the SAS? I don't think many would take that bet.
How about OKC winning 4 of the next 4?
What's funny is that I originally picked OKC in this series, but changed my mind after watching the Spurs dismantle the Clippers and win so many in a row. I really did think a week ago that we were seeing out of the Spurs some of the best basketball ever.

Houston's second best player the first season may as well have not been on the team the second season. And the second best player the second season is in the hall. As a note, it's interesting to think that if they had won in 92-93 when they won their division and lost to Seattle in 7 that Kenny smith is likely in the hall and vernon is really close. Losing in the wc sf is a far cry from winning two more rounds (including the finals against Jordan) but interesting to me nonetheless.

It's a chicken or egg problem - most teams that win multiple titles in a short period of time do so with the same core and thus the "second best with two ring is in the hall" argument holds up.

Are there any examples of this player being on two different title teams? None I can think of, just because a players prime is so small that it's hard to imagine him being the second best player for two different teams that win titles.

It's how the next pass at attempting to measure "clutchness" will be better than current efforts to quantify it.
I think fangraphs has a good start on this - measuring shifts in WPA (win probability added) but of course it's far easier to measure stuff like that in baseball.
And after that work, all that we are going to figure out is that "clutchness" is random. That has already been proven by baseball stat nerds.
If that's true, then why haven't all teams who subscribe to sabermetrics not gone to closers by committee?
Because there is a lot of value in selling closers.

And Shuhmann with a nice writeup over at nba.com.

Although seemingly obvious, this is worth reposting

Boston's big two

For the series, Pierce is a minus-10, meaning that the Celtics have been outscored by 10 points in his 206 minutes on the floor. Ray Allen is a minus-4, also in 206 minutes. And Brandon Bass is a minus-32 in 143 minutes. As a unit, the Celtics' starters have been outscored by six points in 85 minutes together.

But as long as Kevin Garnett and Rajon Rondo are on the floor, the Celtics are in good shape. Garnett is a plus-23 in 189 minutes. Rondo is a plus-5 in 231. And a look at the numbers confirms what you'd probably expect. Garnett is the key to the Boston defense, while Rondo is the key to the offense.

I want the Heat to wear their Road Red tonight. Get out the red jerseys. Rally!!!!!

Call to arms!!!!!

GO HEAT!!!!

Can't wait till tonight. It is going to be a great game.

Bonner's never been able to produce much in the post-season. The bugger the stage, the shakier his shot got. I'm not entirely surprised by Green's disappearance because of the circumstance. He's never been in that setting at the pro level. I can't blame Pop for playing his best 5 players, the ones who were producing in the series until the last seconds of the game.

I think Duncan will play one more year. Parker is signed long-term, but Ginobili and Jackson carry big salaries with contracts expiring in 2013. My guess is Duncan re-ups for one more season since everyone else who matters is already under contract through next year and Popovich knows how to limit veterans' minutes. Then SAS will have a bunch of expensive decisions to make in the 2013 offseason.
If they were cagey, they might try to trade Manu or Jax next year but I doubt it. I expect Pop to time his retirement to Timmy's. It will be a pretty different team after all that.

They should use CGI to replace the Spurs and Thunder players with Heat and Celtic players and just show that game again tonight. That was a win for basketball.
