So have Knick fans given up on trading for Melo this year? Chandler is playing the same as always (other than a HUGE uptick in blocks, which is weird), Gallinari has lost his stroke, Randolph is showing that he is never going to amount to anything, the only young guy playing well is Fields.
I haven't looked into the Knicks cap situation until today, they are on the hook for about 42.5 million next year plus a $3.1 million dollar qualifying offer for Wilson Chandler. To get Melo in free agency, assuming the CBA stays similar to what it is now, they would have to start giving players away again. Unless Melo wants to take less than the Max, his only options as of right now (cap wise) are stay in Denver, go to NJ, Indiana, Memphis, Minnesota, OKC or Sacramento.
Gallo has found his stroke. AR is not going to be a franchise type player like some Knicks fans were hyping him to be, but the season is young and he's coming off an ankle injury. He can become an energy type of guy who can defend and rebound. I believe the Knicks will have cap room to sign Melo. Felton is a young guy and is playing very well.
Here is their cap situation, The Column on the left is from hoops world and the column on the right is hoops hype.Amar'e Stoudemire $18,232,500 $18,217,705
Raymond Felton $8,316,000 $7,500,000
Ronny Turiaf $4,100,000 $4,360,000
Danilo Gallinari $4,190,182 $4,190,182
Timofey Mozgov $3,240,000 $2,566,800
Wilson Chandler $3,099,851 $3,099,851
Anthony Randolph $2,911,231 $2,911,231
Toney Douglas $1,145,640 $1,145,640
Bill Walker $916,100 $916,100
Andy Rautins $788,872 $788,872
Landry Fields $788,872 $788,872
TOTAL $44,629,397 $43,385,402
The total is including everybody except Chandler. Chandler's salary above is his qualifying offer. Bill Walker's Salary is a team option and Tufiaf's salary is a player option. The typical max salary this year is $16,324,500.00, BUT according to Larry Coon's salary cap FAQ the max salary for a player is never less than 105% of his previous year's salary (
HERE), so Melo's max salary for next year would be $18,006,705. So, if they decline the option on Walker and renounce Chandler's rights (that would be pretty dumb) they would have either $14,330,703 or $15,574,699 in cap room, depending on which website you believe.
So, to sign Melo to a max deal the Knicks would have to dump either $3,676,002 or $2,432,006 depending on which site. If Melo wants his current contract extended to get the fullest amount of money he is allowed the Knicks would have to dump approximately a half million dollars more than the above numbers.
Melo to the Knicks is going to take a whole lot of work, and it is going to leave them very little wiggle room in the future to sign anything of value because the combination of Melo's and Amare's salaries are going to grow from a combined ~$36 million to a combined ~$47 million in 2014-2015.
