No way the Nuggets agree to any deal with Nets without getting Favors. The odds Melo signs extension is unlikely even so this is all a waste of time on Nets part likely but they are crazy if they think the Nuggets will prefer a few late first round picks instead of Favors

Dumb question: If a pick is lottery protected and the team finishes in the lottery, is the team that traded for the pick just #### out of luck or does it shift to the following draft year (with or without lottery protection again)?

It gets moved back a year. Typically the protection scales back each year ie.2011 - Top 15 protected2012 - Top 10 protected2013 - Top 5 protected2014 - No protectionOf course every trade is different so there is no set standard.

ha, no they get the next year or until the protection runs out. When Detroit had the #2 pick and took Darko over Melo,Wade and Bosh they got that #2 from Memphis for a trade deadline scrap deal they made FIVE years earlier for Otis Thorpe i think. It was lottery protected for five years or so and the 6th year they were SOL and Detroit got it

They may not prefer it but If its just the Nets del and Knicks deal they may have no choice.

There is no Nets deal unless Melo agrees to extension with Nets, thus no Nets deal

Nets have always had the better trade chips, but the Knicks have always been the preferred destination for Melo. I really wish this Melo drama would end though.

there are 2 steps involved - 1. satisfy Nuggets trade demands2. convince Melo to sign an extensionDespite contradicting reports there is no definitive word on if Melo will sign with NJ or not....so assuming NJ is the team Denver wants to deal with it will be up to Melo but if he says no then Denver can sit on him and he could lose a ton of $. I am not sure he would risk losing $20-$30M - Denver can play hard ball too - I think this is going to be a good old fashioned staring contest upto the deadline.

Leroy, I'm not sure if you wondering about a past trade or potential trade, but trade obligations are shown here:http://www.realgm.com/src_future_draftpicks.php

The Bulls' rights to a future Bobcats' pick, for example, is similar to the example Cliff used.

If we redid the 2010 NBA draft, i wonder where Even Turner would be drafted and how high Landry Fields would go
Turner would still be near the top 5, and so would Fields. I would guess it would go something like Wall, Favors, sadness... Fields is the only 2010 draftee other than Favors and Wall producing, but he is fairly old for a rookie and has a fairly low ceiling, so I would think that Cousins, Bledsoe, Turner (old as well, but has a higher ceiling), Davis and Aminu would have a fair chance of being a higher pick. This may end up being one of the worst drafts ever. There are only about ten guys that even look like rotation players at this point, and only Favors and Wall will be very good players.

Why does Favors get all the love and not Cousins?

I think Cousins skill set is highly regarded. I think the huge knock against him was his character/attitude. And he hasn't exactly quashed the immaturity/attitude issues. But if he ever dedicated himself to the sport, he could be an all star. And Favors "love" is justified. He is going to be an ALL NBA caliber defensive player. Still needs to add some offensive moves, but it looks like the Nets made the right choice.

Cousins has a ton of talent but he is a 1st class jerk and may eat himself out of shape sooner rather than later.....better player right now than Favors but I think most would take Favors over him at this point in the long term.

Orlando and Washington are engaged in serious discussions for a trade that would send Gilbert Arenas(notes) to the Magic, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.Arenas has privately told people for days that he believes a deal will soon send him to Orlando, where he’ll be reunited with Magic general manager Otis Smith, a friend and mentor from Arenas’ days with the Golden State Warriors. Sources said Orlando has escalated its pursuit of a deal in recent days. After losing five of their past six games, the Magic have shown more urgency to find a perimeter scorer who can help them stay a viable contender in the Eastern Conference.
Geez, I just don't know about this...

David Thorpe did a very good article on this for ESPN Insider, and Turner didn't go in the top 10.

 for us Rockets fans....Not sure what the team does from here. They have some very good young players in Lowry, Brooks, Budinger, even Jordan Hill is coming along with increased minutes. But they aren't anywhere near being a top-team in the West and the "top tier" guys in the NBA are mostly wrapped up to long term deals in other places and not interested in moving. Hm.
Houston needs to consider blowing it up and taking their chances in the lottery. It's awfully hard to pick up a franchise player in the middle of the draft, or through FA unless you are NY/LA/MIA/ORL.

Still unclear was whether Orlando would send the expiring contract of Vince Carter(notes) as part of the package or build a trade around longer-term contracts, including that of backup center Marcin Gortat(notes), sources said. The Wizards also have been angling to get a first-round pick in return, sources said.
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=aw-m...radetalks121710I can buy this. Several pages ago, I wrote that Carter for Arenas made sense for the Wizards only and Lewis for Arenas made sense for Orlando only. A trade centered on Lewis plus Gortat plus pick for Arenas might makes sense (salary cap filler might need to be included - didn't check).

A reliable source has indicated to Orlando Pinstriped Post that the Orlando Magic could make a trade using "major pieces" as soon as tomorrow, pegging the chances of such a deal occurring at "70-to-80, almost 90 percent." This news comes shortly after Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reported the Magic and Washington Wizards have moved close to a trade that would send Wizards shooting guard Gilbert Arenas to Orlando, likely in return for Vince Carter and a combination of "longer-term contracts" including backup center Marcin Gortat. I reported about Arenas talks between Orlando and Washington two weeks ago, but as Wojnarowski points out, those talks have increased in intensity of late:

Wow. If that's true, Orlando certainly is going all in -- imagine this not working out if Orlando remains an also-ran and Howard decides to leave!

Otis isn't going to do this and get stuck with both Lewis and Gilbert.I hope.

Looking forward to Skribbles's next subtitle update. 9 points on 3-11? They should have hung on to the machine.

How about them Heat?

You can just send me a PM if there is something in particular you'd like in the subtitle.Heat looking pretty good. Beat the hell out of another weak team last night. :hifive:

Knick fans are pretty quiet today... maybe they aren't for real?
No Knicks fan really thinks this team is a top contender yet. Playoff team yes but they need another piece to compete with the top teams and maybe Melo is that piece.
Dwight Howard could be that piece. I doubt they would that that much better with Melo. They are already scoring 108 points per game. They need considerable help on defense to be a top team.

Very good for the Magic, IMO.

Sources: Magic blockbuster shaping upEmail Print Comments151 By Chris Broussard

ESPN The Magazine

The Orlando Magic, already in serious trade talks with the Washington Wizards about acquiring Gilbert Arenas, are close to pulling off a separate trade with the Phoenix Suns, according to league sources.

The proposed trade, which one source gave a "90 percent" chance of happening, would return former Magic star Hedo Turkoglu, along with Jason Richardson, to Orlando in exchange for Vince Carter and Marcin Gortat.

The deal is likely to be completed within the next 24 hours, according to the sources.

"It's safe to say that it's imminent," one source said. "It's very close. There's always a chance it could fall apart, but it's 90 percent done."

The deal is believed to involve either a few extra players or draft picks, sources said.

The Magic and Suns are reportedly on the verge of a trade that would sent Vince Carter, Marcin Gortat, Mickael Pietrus, and a 2011 first-round pick to Phoenix in exchange for Jason Richardson, Hedo Turkoglu, and Earl Barron. The deal is "90 percent" likely to be completed and announced within 24 hours. Phoenix gets some long-term savings and the mobile center they crave, while Orlando restocks their wing positions and improves their perimeter game. Hedo could be a big winner from a fantasy perspective, as he was struggling badly in Phoenix, while Gortat has the potential to break out with heavy playing time.Source: Chris BroussardRelated: Hedo Turkoglu, Jason Richardson, Mickael Pietrus, Marcin Gortat, Earl Barron

Wow, that would be an awesome trade for Phoenix if true.

Wonder if it paves the way for Steve Nash to be traded, although I wonder what his market would be. He offers alot of value to a playoff team, but what playoff teams have pg needs?

Turkaglu is horrible. And I believe he has alot of years left on his atrocious deal. I still think Richardson is valuable, and would not be a bad piece at all to slot in to the Magic lineup.

Gortat is a solid center at a reasonable price, Pietrus can be a solid role player in Phoenix, and they get Carter's deal to flip for more at the deadline. And a 1st round pick?

Who is running the Magic, Isaiah Thomas? Because that is just like a deal he would make.

New depth charts?:

PG-Nelson, Duhon, Williams
