Why is everyone so simple-minded about this? Individual players don't "win" rings in team sports. To win a championship, you have to play for the best team. It's not clear to me that the Heat are the best team this year. Maybe they are, maybe they're not. The Mavs are very very good, and might be better than the Heat. If they are, how does that take away from LeBron's individual greatness? I just don't get this logic.A lot of older people I talk to from Southern California tell me that for years they considered Elgin Baylor to be the best player in all of basketball. He went to the Finals 6 times, but lost to Boston every time. In 1969 he had two of the all time greats with him, Jerry West and Wilt Chamberlain, and they STILL couldn't beat the Celtics. And that's better than Oscar Robertson, who couldn't even get IN to the Finals until the end of his career when he had Kareem. When you assess individual greatness in a team sport, you simply can't do it by counting rings. I know everybody does, including the players, and all of you. But it's dumb. I don't care how many people disagree with me on this.

I agree no doubt they blew this game. And hat's off to Dallas for taking it the Heat who:1) shut down the offense and took the shot clock down to 5-6 before they ran a set, chucked up threes. No way this team should have 30 3pt attempts. You stop a run by going to the hole. The Heat stopped driving the ball and should have been trying to get to the line. It was baffling2) The last sequence I put on Coach Spo. It is all on him. A foul to give and you put Bosh one on one vs. Dirk? Insane. Bosh also had a massive brain fart by not fouling dirk as soon as his back turned to the basket. A huge meltdown defensively by the entire team.The Heat let this one get away. People can argue all they want, but its the first thing people think of.Dan Marino, Karl Malone, John Stockton, Charles Barkley, etc. Them not winning a title is one of the first things people talk about when bringing up their careers. Dirk said it best this week. 2006 will be on people's minds about him forever until he wins a title. He will hear about 06 the rest of his life and it will torture him if he doesn't ever win. Barkley tried his best to defend the subject the same way on Simmons podcast last week. After he hung up, Simmons and Klosterman talked about the interview and said you could really tell it affected Barkley not winning a title by the way he kept trying to defend it, it hurts him.Todem said it best, it might not be the right logic, but it does define a players career.

As fans...we are not expecting 4,5,6 titles. All that was shtick by Lebron and company. Now back to back...yeah that is an expectation. We want to have our moment in the sun as a legit dynasty in the NBA. If we can go back to back (let's win the first one...I agree) we have a shot at that.Yeah there is an air of arrogance. Actually, that's all they had to do. When 2 of the top 10 players in the league decide to join up to get their rings, it cheapens their accomplishments. I hated the 2001-02 Red Wings, I hated the 2003-04 Lakers and I hate on the Heat. I'm not disputing that Wade, James and Bosh are great players, but if they win, it will be because they are supposed to, because their roster has ######' Wade, James and Bosh.

There is another level of gear that takes hold when you get over that championship hump, and I'm sorry, you have it or you don't. Now if you want to talk to a guy like Ernie Banks or Archie Manning who REALLY lacked the supporting cast to make the playoffs, never mind win it, thats one thing. But in the above, and its really more about a Marino, or a Ewing, and less so about a Reggie Miller who probably willed teams beyond his talent, but when you look at those guys, who had opportunities and couldn't cash in, I don't know. Marino gets a bigger pass though, and frankly, Ewing was going up against Jordan.Lebron is supposed to BE Jordan. Bottom line is I am surprised that other than the "Decision" and the "July Rock Concert" what has the Heat really done to get people in such a tizzy?

Actually, that's all they had to do. When 2 of the top 10 players in the league decide to join up to get their rings, it cheapens their accomplishments. I hated the 2001-02 Red Wings, I hated the 2003-04 Lakers and I hate on the Heat. I'm not disputing that Wade, James and Bosh are great players, but if they win, it will be because they are supposed to, because their roster has ######' Wade, James and Bosh.

Can't disagree with you. They are supposed to win. And that is the expectation. Still winning is fun when it's your home team.But I agree with your point. I loved when the Marlins won the 97 series. We made a bunch of big signings and were built to win. I was at game 7. Amazing experience.However the 2003 team was the best title I have ever seen in baseball. That was not supposed to happen. I watched that team with maybe 3000 other people in the stands for years being built from the bottom up. It was so rewarding. And wow what a rush.Very good point.
