*NBA THREAD* Abe will be missed (9 Viewers)

There has been speculation as to Kobe being on the decline. Given Tuesday's performance of an NBA-best 48 points this season, that could not be further from the truth. He is averaging more points, assists and rebounds per game than in any of his three previous seasons. In two of those seasons he was anything but on the decline, being named NBA Finals Most Valuable player.
Great job by him on improving on his own stats! Let me know when he gets anywhere near the all-time greats that you guys like to compare him to, including LeBron. Especially on a per minute basis. And particularly in the ones that you can accumulate without starting with the ball already in your hands like rebounds and steals. You know, the ones that truly show effort and hustle and complete game instincts. How does he measure up?
Do rings count? He leads Lebron by a large margin there. Didn't we already do the Kobe vs. Lebron thread? Pretty sure Kobe won that one too.

Assists show more effort that scoring? LeBron SHOULD be a better rebounder than Kobe, based on sheer size, and the fact that LeBron plays forward - Kobe's a guard. And Kobe's playing with 2 of the top 5 centers in the game - does Miami even have a center?
Look who you're talking to. Please don't bring facts to the table with this group.
:lmao:

Still using that terrible argument? Horry >>>> Kobe.

Are you a Ferris alias? Cause most people understand that being a superstar matters when counting rings. Being a role player doesn't. And last time I checked Kobe and Lebron were both leaders on their teams that won championships. Errrr, I mean Kobe was a leader on his teams that won championships. Lebron is just the guy that loves to disappear in the 4th quarter.

The Ws send another top east coast squad packing. You can't stop Dorrell Wright, you can only hope to contain him.Did I hear Ernie Johnson right - the 76ers are 7-2 and atop the Atlantic? Kooky.
76ers were number one in Hollinger's power rankings yesterday. They are crushing teams.
I've only seen them beat down the Wiz in preseason. Anyone got some insight into what's going so right in Philly?

From Hoopsworld:
Philadelphia 76ers: Most people agreed the Philadelphia 76ers would probably be a playoff team in 2012. With talented players like Jrue Holiday and Andre Iguodala teamed with Elton Brand, Thaddeus Young and Louis Williams it was understandable. Raise your hand if you thought they would be leading the Atlantic Division eight games into the season. Anyone? That isn’t a Philly fan? No? Philly is doing it with defense. Last year they scored 99.0 points a game and gave up 97.5, but this year they have upped their scoring to 101.6 (through Tuesday) and are only allowing 85.6. That points-allowed number is the best in the NBA and so is the corresponding +16.0 point differential. They lead the league in field-goal percentage allowed (39.2%) and are eighth in rebounding differential. And don’t expect the Sixers to go away either – as long as defense remains a focus they will continue to win games.

They've beaten the Suns, Warriors, Hornets, Pistons, Raptors, Pacers and Kings. They've lost to Portland (who put up 107 on them) and the Jazz. Draw your own conclusions. Tonight vs. the Knicks should be a good one.

They only lost that game to Portland by 3 or 4 and it was in Portland. Look at their avg margin of victory over the "bad" teams, it's astronomical. They are destroying teams. I think they are the third or fourth best team in the East, easily.

And Doug Collins is the obvious frontrunner for coach-of-the-year.

A Fate Worse Than Death: Wizards vs Raptors

The stage was set: Wizards versus Raptors. Winless versus hopeless. After the tip, both teams missed jump shots on their opening possessions. I fought the urge to raid a tiny stash of prescription painkillers I glommed from my father's refrigerator over the holidays. A few minutes into the game, John Wall drove right, pulled up for a mid-range jumper, and watched the ball sail over and past the rim. Two minutes later, as if to give Wall a do-over, the Raptors' DeMar DeRozan toed the 3-point line, caught a pass, and shot the ball a few feet over the basket. Dueling air balls.

Brandon (Detroit)Would you rather have John Wall or Ricky Rubio as your PG of the futureChad Ford (1:14 PM)Right now? Rubio, no question. But I'm not writing off Wall. He has the ability to be a superstar in the NBA. He's in a terrible culture on a terrible team right now. Hopefully that won't permanently stunt his growth. But Wall's superior athletic abilities could allow him to be a transcendent player if he gets it.
Lots of John Wall disrespect lately. He's surrounded by a terrible team, I still think he's a multiple time all star.

If Rubio wins ROY, he'll be the third player from the draft class of 2009 to do. That's got to be some sort of record. Tyreke Evans in 2010, Blake Griffin in 2011, Ricky Rubio in 2012.
That's pretty cool.

He does not look good so far this season. His jumper is abysmal- that has nothing to do with his teammates. I can't even really explain how bad it's been, you just have to watch the way opposing teams defend him to get a feel for it. His decisionmaking has also been suspect, but that's less of a big deal at this age and easier to fix. I don't know where to find individual game +/- (little help?), but I had the distinct impression that the Wiz were actually better with Mack at the point last night.

He's gifted and he's a hard worker, which is a great combo, and I'm sure he's gonna turn into at least a decent PG. But he was a #1 draft pick, and with that comes much higher expectations and much more scrutiny. Simply becoming an above-average NBA PG won't be enough.

It is amazing how a PG w/o a jumper can wreck an entire offense. Rondo's the most recent high profile example, as entire defenses vs. the Celtics are based on giving him opening 15+ footers. If I'm Flip Saunders, my HIGHEST priority is encouraging Wall to shoot whenever he's open, regardless of whether his jumper is falling. Just keep shooting it. If you miss 10 in a row, don't hesitate on the 11th one. The absolute worst thing that could happen to this Wizards franchise (outside of a career threatening injury) is for Wall's confidence to get shattered during what is effectively a practice season.

 My basketball instincts are impeccable.

Vesely +14 in 16 minutes! He will be the biggest Wiz fan favorite since the glory days of Jahidi White and Juan Dixon.

Agree about Mack, really like him. Him and Parsons were my two favorite under the radar rookies this year. Players like Shelvin Mack and Eric Maynor(hopefully he recovers) will play 10+ years in the leauge just because of their basketball smarts.

I have a hard time calling that "disrespect" anyway. Ability to be a superstar, superior athletic abilities...the guy's right on point here. Wall's in an awful situation. Maybe the worst in the league for a player to grow. 10, btw

 Kobe continuing his clinic. :lmao: @ those who continue to deny that Kobe is one of the greatest players ever.
And 10 is where it ends.In other news...Carlisle got ejected tonight, and I don't think I have ever seen him that mad. He was at the three point line on the Celtics bench end of the floor just screaming at the ref.

Knicks get 4th straight win over hot Sixers team. Defense has been brought back to the Garden. D'Antoni has got to go more than 8 deep in his rotation in this shortened season or Knicks will have dead legs by playoff time.

Jeff Van Gundy says some of the most moronic things sometimes...
Sometimes? He is the worst announcer in all of sports.
Did you see the Mavs/Celts game? Things like "that was an absolutely horrible call" just seconds before the replay shows a guy get horse collared Roy Williams style, or that the NBA should refund fines to players who get the yell-at-ref techs if the replay shows the player was right... :lmao: He truly is awful.

Kinda wish Duncan would retire before everyone completely forgets how good he used to be.

To say he's "a shell of his former self" is being kind. It borders on embarrassing some nights.

How dare anyone post about the NBA's leading scorer during back to back 40 pt games.

Coulda had him for NBA scoring leader at +650.

Horrible call. Wade should have been called for a technical for his theatrics rather than the whistle being 10 seconds after the fact. Horrible.

I turned the game on with 2 mins left and have seen Lebron miss 3 shots, 2 free throws and commit a shooting foul from 3 point range.

Same. That said, its been entertaining for 10 minutes. First NBA game Ive watched since Xmas. I can see why people would tune-in nightly, but I also realize why I dont watch nightly until the playoffs.

Why were the heat pissed after giving up that dunk? Watching the replay, at no point did they foul any clipper.
because they complain after every play.I dont get why the NBA stopped calling techs on any player reacting after a play like they did last year. Amare got 10+ techs for that stuff, Wade and Bron argue after each shot and never get techs
