I'm very interested in the leadership aspect for the Heat.
Most teams that have multiple stars have a clear cut "Kingpin" player (Jordan/Bird/Magic/Duncan even Rose/Kobe/Paul in today's NBA). This is the player the coach must tailor communication and management to. Teams that don't have this clear hierarchy seem to be tenuous. Examples: Shaqobe Lakers, NY Knicks of this year and the Heat as probably the most extreme scenario.
I think it does some very interesting things to the team dynamic. If there is one face of the team all the role players know who is the guy. The coach gets the star to buy in, and the rest is downhill. The mentality of the role players is to get behind that one guy who will take the glory, but also the blame.
Usually there are two types of role players on a team. Ones who follow the coach, and ones who follow the best of their peers.
With the Heat, you clearly have two guys who hold so much weight, they really can control the team. The coach has two (maybe 3) guys he has to get to create a united front. It seems frankly like a losing proposition.
It also puts the role players in a spot where they are not sure who to follow. If you're the type of guy who takes leadership from a peer, who is that guy? The best player or the guy who has traditionally held the leadership role for the franchise?
I am discounting Bosh because I think he's clearly taken a supporting role and sacrificed his spot as the face of the team. Wade clearly has not and it can be argued he shouldn't. There are times he's terrible, but he has stretches of absolute brilliance. It seems at times to me that LeBron is willing to let Wade have that role, while his play clearly indicates he should be the face of a team.
Anyways, this is nothing new, just very intriguing to me for some reason. From a talent standpoint, I would trade Wade for a better fit. The previous example of Harden would be perfect. But he was the original star and that could be a disaster for the players who view him as the loyal soldier.
