*NBA THREAD* Abe will be missed (8 Viewers)

Well, Pierce and Garnett only have a couple years of good play left. And I think the idea that a contender can be built around Rondo is getting harder and harder to prove.

Can a starting five of Nash, Gay, Pierce, Garnett, and whatever contend in the east for the next two years? I think probably as well or better than now. PLus they would have a TON of cap room in three years when a guy like Love (IIRC) is eligible, among others.

Lakers get younger and get out of the Nash mess.

Memphis gets the Gasols together, which needs to happen.
What happens to Randolph?
Send him to Denver for Iggy.

Would there be any takers for Nash out there?
Doesn't he have two years left on the deal? That would be a tough one.:Fires-up-Scola/Martin-Trade-Machine:Cousins and Nash to BostonRondo, Hayes, and Salmons to LALGasol to Sacramento
So the Kings give up a better, younger player, for a older, worse one. Seems legit.
Forgot to add cheaper and under contract for longer. Hell, I doubt the Kings even take Howard straight up for Cousins.

Rondo has so much more value than any of those other players. There is no way the Lakers could end up with him.
You're ruining this for me.
Regardless, just imagine how much drama would occur nightly by adding Rondo to Kobe and Dwight. Those three together would make the current Laker team look like the Hickory Huskers.
Don't forget that Hickory had to overcome a lot of internal issues as well.My team's on the floor.

You think the team would be worse?

I don't think it'd be better, it's not a strong move for the future, there would be some lineup problems to resolve, and they'd still be stuck with Nash's contract. If they're going to blow it up, getting rid of Nash is priority 1. Also I'd like them to try and retain Howard if possible.

I think it kind of depends on which way the wind is blowing on Howard, hard as that it is to discern. If he's not going to resign, I like it for LA.

given the disaster that is the current Lakers season, is it now assumed that Howard leaves LA after this year (either via free agency or sign & trade)?

It would be funny to see Kobe sign with the Clippers when his current contract runs so he can still live in L.A. and have a chance to win that 6th ring.

There's just no telling. Howard's kind of a weird/immature guy. I would guess he leaves, but who knows.
I think Howard wants to be courted like all these babies. He'll spend a week with each team that has max room before signing with the Lakers since they have the most money.

The Bulls are on a 50 win pace through 41 games. Unreal. And another Bulls thought. They have stolen Gibson and Butler at pick 26 and 30. I think Teague will be a solid backup PG at the minimum and the Euro big man is still getting good reviews. Tremendous drafting for a consistent winner.

Asik, too. Only bad pick in the last 5 years or so was James Johnson (and he's not THAT bad).

Since Ferris isn't here to say it...Can you imagine a LeBron James team ever being 17-25 with the top center in the league, a future HOF PG and one of the top big men in the game on his team? Compare the talent on this Lakers squad to the Cavs team that LBJ dragged to the Finals in '07. And consider that that Cavs team was coached by Mike Brown, a man fired early this season by the Lakers because they, led by Kobe Bryant, were sucking.

Howard isn't going anywhere, either via trade or in the offseason in FA.
Agreed. The Lakers can offer him the most money. If his back is bad (and it looks that way) he's only getting one more max deal. It's LA. He'll take some tours and be in the headlines for a while. He might even do some stupid stunt like Lebron in announcing where he's going to sign. But he isn't leaving the LA Lakers for the friggin Atlanta Hawks...

No one is tuning in to watch Dwight's decision.

Its really unfair to compare Kobe at his age to any other superstar

It's always so silly when people do this. None of us have ANY idea what motivates the guy. None. You can't apply what you would do if you were in his shoes to his thought process. All we know is that he doesn't want to be in Orlando playing for Stan Van Gundy. And we know that he was OK with being traded to L.A. but that he hasn't signed an extension there. And we kind of heard that if he had his druthers he would have been traded to Brooklyn or maybe Dallas, but that's mostly gossip. That's it. That's all any of us know about how his mind works. What part of that makes you think he'll stay in LA for sure, or that there's no way he'd want to play for his hometown team? If you haven't noticed, the Lakers kind of suck at basketball, and there's obvious path for them to get better in the next few years. I'm sure he likes money and an extra year of income security, but I'm also sure that he doesn't enjoy playing for a team that sucks at basketball.

We will see what Lebron is doing at 34. It isn't a completely fair comparison. Lebron was 23 when he took the Cavs to the finals. Kobe has lost a step. LeBron may lose a step somewhere around 34 as well. Also, Dwight Howard has been a top big man, but he isn't playing like it now. Nash is a HOF based on things that happened years ago. I'm not sure he is even an average PG anymore. Also, I bet the Lakers wish they had been more patient with Brown. Dantonio has been a true disaster.

This is silly. Of course Howard hasn't signed an extension in LA yet - it would be foolish financially as he can get better terms by waiting to re-up with LA this summer. And while no one can say the know exactly what motivates any particular athlete, we can look at history and get a pretty good idea of what is going to happen. Athletes very, VERY rarely turn down more money from one organization to play for another. And no one turns down more money from the Lakers to take less money from another franchise. It simply doesn't happen. To ignore the realities of the situation and act as if we're clueless as to where Dwight will go is crazy talk.

If I didn't know better (I don't know better) I'd say the magic are trying to throw games. Vucevic had 19-14 through 3 quarters, and if he played in the 4th it was brief and I missed it. No foul trouble for him and the Magic lose at the buzzer.
