What if the Bulls traded Bynum to the Lakers for Gasol? Then they could amnesty Boozer in the off-season and see if Gasol would be interested in a team-friendly deal? Gasol is a verey nice scorer and okay rebounder. With Noah in the middle, Gasol at the 4, Butler at the 3 and Rose at the 1 they would just need to find a 2 guard. They could either re-sign Taj Gibson to come off the bench or bring the Euro over. Defensively Gasol is soft, but with Noah and Butler playing the 3 and the 5 they might be able to make up for some of his defensive shortcomings.
The Bulls already cut Bynum.

Bulls weren't looking to add salary, Nikola Mirotic is their long-term 4, and Bulls are trying to get younger in this mini-rebuild. Gasol doesn't fit in their plans.

Did I read that right? The Bulls sent Deng and 3 picks for Bynum and then cut him?
No. Bynum + 3 picks for Deng.
Yep, save cash and add picks for a guy they weren't going to re sign anyway and improve their positioning in what should be a very deep lottery.I think the Cavs expect to ink Deng long term. Already too young as is, so that many picks is a waste. Chances of the Sacramento pick being a first rounder slim and bordering on none.

It's funny. This draft is supposed to be so great that teams were suspected of tanking for the opportunity to be in the lottery. The Kings they have a decent chance to get a top pick. Yet everyone thinks they won't rise out of the bottom third in at least one year by 2017?

Ah, was watching the Pacers game and they had the graphic all screwed up!

The western conference is loaded.

Cousins is the only player on the kings that would get meaningful run on any of the wests top 6 teams. Gay is picking up that option as well. The kings are a lot closer to the bottom then the top.

Thomas would play for any team in the league, and Gay would get run on most teams playing the way he has in Sac. With an athletic rim protector who could mask their awful defense, they'd flirt with .500. Those guys don't grow on trees though. And while .500 hosts a playoff series in the east, it won't be enough in the west for the foreseeable future.

.500 would be enough for the Bulls to get their pick. That would probably be around pick 13 or so.

It's possible the Kings will start playing .500 for the last half of the season but they won't come close to finishing with that record considering they are sitting at .333 through the first half the season. Pick will likely go to the Bulls in 2015 and be in the teens. Still not bad.

If Rudy was making 1 million and named "Alonzo gee" he would be struggling for PT.
BS. So far 20ppg on 50% shooting. Taking less shots than in Toronto. Rudy is clearly not a #1 option but so far is settling in nicely behind a dominant guy like Cousins. So far it looks like this will be the rare trade that is good for both teams and the players involved

Very, VERY disappointed the Lakers could not make the Gasol for Bynum deal happen.
How much more did they want in return? I think they are over estimating the value of a 6-month rental of Gasol for an also-ran.
Rumor is that they wanted Waiters or a 1st round pick.

Which is probably too much, though Waiters hasn't shown much thus far.
He is 2nd in the league in 6th man PPG. Not too bad.

I'm not sure the Cavs ever really wanted Gasol. At least not as much as they wanted Deng. As a rental, he's a better fit and better chance to re-sign him than Pau I think.

Be patient. Unless something drastically changed in his head, he'll be back to his old ways soon enough.

Rudy Gay  Played probably the best game of his career vs. the Blazers. He was actually efficient. 32 points on 16 shots.
If I'm recalling the stat correctly, Gay shot 50% or better in only 1 of his 18 games in Toronto this year, while he has done so in 9 of his 13 games in Sacramento. Not sure if that's a fluke or if playing with two other very good scorers in Thomas and Cousins is opening things up for him, but he's been valuable since the trade.

Well, I'm sure it's a coincidence that he's basically stopped taking 3 pointers. I don't know if it's by design or if Cousin's just opens the floow up more, but his shot chart is much closer to the rim since the move.

I agree with you, they've coveted Deng for a while now.

If Waiters was in a better situation (not playing so many minutes next to a ball controlling/scoring PG or played with a PG that shot more from the perimeter), I think he'd be viewed differently by many.

The Knicks have begun exploring J.R. Smith trade options, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein.
Smith has been causing more headlines for his boneheaded mistakes than he has for his game lately, so it makes sense that the Knicks would attempt to rid themselves. He was fined $50,000 by the NBA on Wednesday for "recurring instances of unsportsmanlike conduct" after another shoelace incident on Tuesday night. Coach Mike Woodson called Smith’s behavior "unacceptable." The Knicks can’t trade Smith until January 15 because of the nature of his contract but they’re clearly looking to have something in place. The fantasy value of Iman Shumpert and Tim Hardaway Jr. would increase if Smith is traded out of New York.

Good ####### luck trying to trade somebody making $5M/yr, shooting 35%, coming off of a knee injury, and causing all sorts of problems on and off the court.

"Taking horrible shots that cost the team a game is one thing. But untying someone else's shoes? We won't accept that." /Knicks

5 million for that guy isn't the worst deal in the world if he's not acting like a knucklehead. So, never mind.

Asik and Donuts for Smith and a first

Smart move by the Bulls. The get compensated for a player that they wasn't going to resign anyway. Bynum was just to match the salaries.

No. Bynum was to help them save 20 million and avoid the repeater tax. They probably do the deal without any picks attached.

Sounds like PJ Hairston is going to start playing in the D-League soon.

I think somebody's going to end up with a steal on him late in the draft. Great size with silly range.

Agree on Hairston. He's a lottery talent pretty much any other year that'll likely slip to latter portions of 1st or early 2nd. His game is very well suited for the NBA.

Glen Rice Jr did well in similar path. So long as he takes care of business in D league, he'll be fine.

Change the 1st round pick for a 2nd round pick and you have a deal. Will even fly JR out to Houston.

Man the Pistons look bad; just lazy and disinterested. So much individual talent with $.02 heads.

ETA: Maybe it was just cause they were on a back to back but that was the weakest efforts I've seen all year

These guys rule.

In 1976, the ABA merged with the NBA, bringing the Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs, New York Nets and Denver Nuggets into the fold. Two teams, the Kentucky Colonels and the Spirits of St. Louis, were essentially paid to go away. The Colonels’ owners accepted $3 million from the NBA to fold their team, while the Spirits’ owners got a different deal.

Ozzie and Daniel Silna, brothers who owned the Spirits, took just $2.2 million, along with an agreement to receive one-seventh of national TV revenue that each of the four former ABA teams would receive, for as long as the NBA existed.

Oops.

Now, 38 years later, the Silnas have received about $300 million as a result of the deal. They could make at least $500 million more if they accept a buyout from the NBA now, The New York Times reports. The NBA is willing to pay the enormous sum to finally get the Silnas out of its hair, while the Silnas no longer have to fight with the league, which understandably grits its teeth whenever it makes one of its yearly payments to the brothers. The Silnas will not lose their cash cow entirely, according to the Times, as they will continue to receive smaller payments from television revenue for the near future. A new deal would allow for the Silnas to be bought out at some point.

The Silnas did not have to rework the deal and could have continued to receive payments for perpetuity. But with the popularity of the league growing globally and more fans watching games streaming online, there is some doubt how long massive TV contracts for sports leagues will continue. Accepting $500 million now might be looked back on as yet another masterstroke by the Silnas four decades from now. Also, at some point, a good sport stops running up the score and just walks off the court with a decisive victory, confident that the point has been made.

Bucks are doing what needs to be done finally.
I can't imagine the NBA will let them get the #1 pick.

I think the lowest draft position the league's worst team can get is #4 overall......I expect them to be slotted at #4.

===============================

I like the Deng deal more and more for the Bulls. Very possible they end up with 2 Top 15 picks in the 2014 draft. They've got Butler and Snell at 2/3 and can use one of those picks on SG/SF if they desire.

PG: Rose

SG: Butler/Snell/draft pick

SF: Butler/draft pick

PF: Mirotic & Gibson (if latter isn't dealt)

C: Noah

Wasn't the 1st rounder in 2015?

Yeah, I've wanted Deng gone since the 2nd half of last season on account of Butler. There isn't $12M worth of difference between these guys and without a healthy Rose there isn't anyone on the entire roster that can create their own shot consistently. Hopefully they can find a way to use some of the Deng and hopefully Boozer money to go get that guy. Butler is definitely a drop off on offense and it'll hurt on that side of the ball in the short term though.
