*NBA THREAD* Abe will be missed (8 Viewers)

I realize the point for Boston is to suck even more than before, but Brooks and Crawford for two second round picks seems to be a freaking giveaway.

GS actually needs more help on offense than defense (eta: esp. their second unit), so this is probably a pretty good deal. Hopefully some of that D rubs off on Crawford, Stevens has done a great job with him so far this year.

Was Boston really that strapped, money-wise? Seems odd to give up on Brooks too.

Simmons points out via Twitter that this trade would allow Miami to go after Bynum.

Boston actually took on more salary (Anthony's deal goes through next year and everyone else is expiring), which is how they got the picks.

All about collecting assets.

Best case scenario: next year Philly makes playoffs as around 6 to 8th seed and Boston gets their number one which will probably be between 15-20. Anthony has a player option next year ($3.8 I think) so next year he can be dangled as an expiring contract in package with some of the multiple first round picks Boston has over the next 4 years.

Worst case: Philly doesn't make the playoffs next year and Boston gets 2 second round picks and has Anthony's expiring contract next year for trade.

Crawford and Brooks were not part of the future in Boston. Ainge gets some assets for them now. I think Ainge is content with getting a good pick in the lottery this year, but ultimately he's gathering as many assets as he can so in the next year or two he can make a trade for superstar ala KG. I'm sure he'll move more guys for more "assets" before the trade deadline and I'd bet my average sized balls that Bass and Humphries are next.

Ultimate scenario for Boston this season: continue to tank and get top 3 pick. Philly somehow gets the 8th seed THIS year and Boston gets their first rounder this year (which would be #15 overall) Hawks crash and don't make the playoffs along with the Nets and Boston would have a top 3 pick (their own), the #8 or #9 pick (from Nets but Hawks have option to swap) and the #15 from Philly.

OK, but it was imperative to give up Brooks? Obviously he has his deficiencies, but why not get another 3 months to look at him?

I dont' know. Maybe they saw enough of him already? Maybe the deal wouldn't happen unless he was included?

Degenerate gamblers, please explain this to me. Raptors open at -4 vs Boston today. A pretty low line IMO for one of the hottest teams in vs one of the worst/coldest (Raps have covered 10 straight overall). Boston trades away their (arguably) 2nd best player and the line moves to -3.5. Why?

Love seeing Boston and Sacramento on their ways to W's tonight, while LA is about to get pounded on the 2nd night of back to backs.

Embrace the tank. Love it. Feel it.

I haven't bet basketball for a long while now. Was just curious as to why it would move like that.

Oden looking pretty good for the Heat, while the rest of their team is laying a turd.
Good news about Oden, but he talked after the game about dealing with soreness, like with Wades' knee, so he's not guaranteed to play against the Pacers. With the trade of Joel Anthony, maybe Bynum will be targeted.

But the Heat aren't guaranteed to play against the Pacers in the Eastern finals. They weren't dominating in either of their 2 latest championship seasons. They needed many things to fall into place, and benefited from being relatively injury free. Missing from the recent Heat losses is defense - the experts say that will come with effort. A big part of the Heat's small ball success is the outside shot when James and Wade penetrate. 38 year old Ray Allen is 3 for hist last 26 from downtown and 35 years old Shane Battier is very inconsistent. Chalmers has a achilles strain. Mike Miller could be missed come playoff time. Chris Andersen, whose super efficiency was been a big part of the Heat's success during the win streak and playoffs last year, has missed several games in December and January due to back and neck soreness. And it never clear which Wade will show up game to game. Lebron can't do it all by himself.

As a Pacers fan, I hope Oden is available if the Heat and Pacers match up. It, to me, is a sign of desperation for the Heat. They know they need help against Hibbert. I can't wait to see Hibbert schooling Oden.

Pacer proud!

Oden looks very strong (physically). His body shape has certainly matured.

So he's about 45 then?
No. He looks like a solid late 20s man.

No skinny kid left on his frame.

Oden had everything - I thought he was bound for HOF greatness. Best big man prospect since Shaquille. He deserves some good luck.

Oden looked like a legitimate piece last night. Hard not to be happy for him.

That said, I don't think he'll be getting all that much time matched up with Hibbert. He can't share the floor with Bosh and Wade, it kills the Heat's spacing. I actually think the Heat might have pulled off the upset win last night over the unstoppable, all-powerful basketball juggernaut that is the Washington Wizards if Spoelstra hadn't experimented with an Oden-Bosh-LeBron-Wade-Chalmers lineup to start the second half. It didn't work on either end. So assuming Bosh, Wade and Hibbert all are on the floor for the start of the game, the start of the second half and the last 8 minutes of the game, gonna be tough to match up Oden with Hibbert.

Whose minutes would he be taking in the playoffs? Haslem started 19 of the games down low. The backup was primarily Chris Anderson (15 mpg). Otherwise, anthony played about 4 mph. The rest of the subbing of the big men pretty much went to small ball lineups with Allen, Battier, or Lewis. Oden is a luxury, not a need.

Yup. I think they'll go small against the Pacers and try to kill them from the three point line. Hibbert's a defensive force, but it's not like he's Kareem on the offensive end. They can throw Bosh and a smattering of other big bodies/fouls at him on that end and probably be OK.

That's assuming the Heat somehow get past the Wiz in the second round, of course.

Hibbert may not be Kareem, but he averaged 22 against the Heat in the playoffs last year. If Oden can do better than the Birdman on that front, Oden should get some meaningful playing time in that series.

The Pacers are playing with a swagger I haven't seen before. A lot of this comes from Stevenson. Looking forward to the playoffs.

One thing that does concern me is the Heat coasting down the stretch if they get the #2 locked up while the Pacers would be playing all out in hopes of securing the best overall record in case they do get to the finals. Might make for tired legs.

They may also have Bynum in the fold, which would mean that between Bynum, Anderson, Oden, and Haslem they'd have 23 fouls to give in a big man lineup which would no doubt disrupt Hibbert. He's a good free throw shooter for a big man, but he doesn't shoot a lot of them.

Maybe some, but like I said they looked an absolute mess when he was on the floor with the Heat starters, which is obviously problem when it comes to sharing the floor with Hibbert. I suppose they have four months to figure it out and Spoelstra is a lot smarter than I am, but it seems like it could be an issue.

It will be interesting to see what happens to Stevenson in the offseason and what kind of offers he'll receive. There will be a lot of interest in him. I'm not sure if the Pacers will be able to afford to hold this team together.

2pm CST game on NBATV today from London.
Hawks/Nets is a weird choice. Am I missing something? I'm guessing there's not a lot of expat fans of either team, given the newness of one team and the Atlanta-ness of the other. Also no Luol Deng, which seems like a no-brainer.
