*NBA THREAD* Abe will be missed (5 Viewers)

I don't see the big deal.
I'm all for athletes taking their time to get healthy and not rush back and jeopardize their career. But citing the fact that your knees may be sore at age 50 is a pretty poor excuse for missing games for which you are being paid more than $200k a piece to play in now.

He traditionally misses between 10-13 shots per game it looks like. So I'd go Fri Nov 14 vs San Antonio -- sometime in the 2nd quarter.
Adjusting for age and the Swaggy P factor, I'll take the 4th quarter on Sunday November 16 vs Golden State. That would also be his last chance to get it done in LA before a 3 game road trip, so you know he'll be gunning to finish the job in front of the home crowd.
Wow. Missed it by 2-3 full games. Remarkable. He's been absolutely horrible. Jordan was better in his final year on the Wizards at age 39 than Kobe is at age 36, by a decent margin. Last season 36 year old Paul Pierce was worlds better than Kobe right now, and while Paul Pierce is a sure fire Hall of Famer and great player, even the most ridiculous Celtics fan of all time wouldn't rank him in the NBA's all-time Top 25. This is legacy-changing awfulness.
:goodposting: Thought I had this nailed, but its hard to predict this epic level of chuckery.

My guess- Rose, Thibs and the Bulls realize that the Spurs model or the Heat/Wade model is the way to go with him this season. But they don't want to just come right out and say it, because the coach, player and org don't have the recent the playoff success to back it up like those teams have/had. So in an effort to avoid saying what they're really doing, he rambled on about his future in more vague terms and ended up saying something that sounds kinda crappy.

People are pissed at a guy that hasn't been healthy in two years taking it slow, worrying about his health, and thus calling him entitled. :potkettle:

Really high comedy. Well done Bulls fans. Well done.

Yeah, he should have just come out and said, "I'm still not feeling up to playing every night and we're taking it slow." Nobody would have batted an eyelash.

What an embarrassing loss for the Hornets :bag:
You're going to see a lot of that. Double overtime win with a ton of minutes for key guys followed by a cross country plan trip. The whole Hornets buzz has to be a huge emotional lift for these guys and I expect to see them crash on the road this year. They are already 3-1 at home and 0-3 on the road.
I'm ok with this scenario against good or even average teams. But the Lakers? Not so much. And I really hope it's just rumblings around here about trying to get Kobe back in CLT. The Hornets have worked hard to get a good nucleus and I don't want to see that destroyed for Kobe.
Agreed, #### Kobe. Don't want any part of him.

Another collapse against the Trail Blazers last night.

I don't follow or care about the NBA but this thread title changing makes me feel like I'm at least kinda keeping up. And it cracks me up especially last week's. Good work being done here.

These guys are still trying to figure out how to play together. I didn't make it all the way through the game, so it was a bit of a surprise to see the loss after leading by 20+

One thing to always keep in mind about Rose when you read his quotes is that he isn't very bright and certainly not a deep thinker. There is a reason he had to get someone to take his SAT test for him. Things he says often come out wrong. This has been true as long as he's been in the league. Watching him play, it's clear he loves to play and loves to win. He certainly needs to be careful about playing with injuries particularly considering his injury history. His handlers and the organization have generally been in agreement about this. (With the notable exception of him taking the whole year off after his first knee surgery.) I don't think there is really anything more to this than that.

This season is awful for Kobe because he's doing his thing on a bad team, but I wouldn't say this changes his legacy. The knocks on him are the same as they always have been (ball hogging, terrible efficiency, no leadership, etc.) IMO.

It's just more sad and funny now because the team around him isn't loaded with stars.

Interesting game plan from the Wiz. Send Pierce out to drop an elbow in Lowry's face. Guess they know they zero chance if Lowry is playing.
Paul Pierce is done. That's about all he's good for at this point.
http://gfycat.com/PowerfulNiceGander

Helluva elbow but just angered Lowry into a triple double.
THAT's what you're complaining about? He barely got him and was apologizing before Lowry hit the floor. If the Raps are so soft that they're whining about that it's no wonder Pierce was able to knock them out of the playoffs on their home floor as a 6 seed last year.

Seriously, though- Raps are far and away the best team in the East at this point. It's not close. Of course we were saying the same thing about Indiana until the end of January last year.
Vindicated by Zach Lowe!

Beware: This team is deep and rooted in continuity, with a fearsome home crowd challenging Golden State as the league’s most intimidating environment. They are head-and-shoulders above the rest of the unformed East.

I think he's using "the unformed East" to distinguish it from the teams he considers legit contenders, and/or the teams that are going through "new team" struggles, but aren't expected to stay in that category for long. I don't think he believes for an instant the Raps are the best in the entire East.

FWIW, I like how the Raps look, and don't dismiss their record at all. But I do give records this time a year a back seat to how players look, and what that says about questions we had about those players coming in.

The Raps' backcourt looks dominant, to the surprise of nobody. And maybe they're even slightly better than we thought. That's great!

But coming in, we wondered if Jonas would finally take that step forward, or if Amir's ankles were going to remain an ongoing and unsolvable problem...and I'm worried that neither of those questions looks to have a very happy answer early on. :(

He says pretty much exactly what I said. Not like I projected them to win the Finals

I should add that the Raps had Amir Johnson and Jonas V healthy and relatively effective vs the Wiz, so maybe they're more of a concern than I realize.

JV played the worst game of his career last night :X

It is out of Toronto and Chicago (with a healthy Rose) for who the best in the East is right now. Cleveland will be there at the end of the year. Washington will be knocking on the door.

I'd add Miami into that mix. And yeah, the Wiz are definitely a few rungs down at this point. The Garrett Temple experiment is fun and all, and it's nice to know they won't be completely hung out to dry if Pierce is done (which he might be, he looks awful). But we won't know what we have until we find out if Bradley Beal has improved significantly from last season. If he has they're in the mix, if not they'll be back on that next tier down.

My bold prediction- nobody wins more than 55 games but 7 teams win 45 or more, resulting in a crazy seeding scramble in March and April.

Why aren't the Wiz giving Otto Porter more burn instead of playing around with Temple? Porter's looked pretty solid from what I've seen.

I question whether Miami can keep it up all season. They're so terribly thin.

Beats me, I assumed Otto would start until Beal was healthy, since Temple could help out with ballhandling duties when Wall is out, too. I think maybe they like Otto as their sixth man type for now? He is getting plenty of minutes, sixth-most on the team. Maybe they figure they'll milk Temple as much as possible for now (second-most minutes on the team) and keep everyone else that much fresher for later in the season.

Which part has you stumped?

Nobody posted what Rose said -- wasn't common knowledge yet.
I see. I heard his comments on Mike and Mike on the way in this morning and was very disappointed. I have always enjoyed watching him play. It's clear he's got some poor advisors and some entitlement issues (IMO). Makes me enjoy the class the Spurs exhibit that much more. I really feel bad for you Bulls fans out there. And to have this joker on the same squad as Noah? What a shame.
The best part of this whole Rose diatribe is the bolded. You do realize the Spurs have been doing THE EXACT SAME THING that Rose is doing with Timmy, Parker and Manu for YEARS, right?

Pop rests his guys for a playoff run, Rose is resting for after basketball run.

Huge difference.

For the life of me I can't figure out the difference, other than Pop arguably looking to do it more on nationally broadcast games in order to make his point/thumb his nose at the league office.

Spurs guys are getting saved so they offer the team the most value at the most important times. Rose is saving himself so he doesn't accidentally waste any of his value on the thing he's getting paid for. You really don't see the difference?

I'm pretty sure the difference is the Spurs is all SA has, so whatever Pop does is fine while Chicago is well, Chicago.

It might read as more same if there were anything in Rose's history to suggest saving him for a playoff run actually had any value to the team, I guess.

Last I checked Chicago was a perennial playoff team... Rose not going to play then?

Thought of another way:

On the one hand, you have the Spurs stars, who vocally defer to their coach and team for basketball-related reasons when it comes to their minutes, who are aging, who have a track record of giving back to the team and fans for the betterment of the franchise, and who have an absolutely astounding track record of success to show for it.

On the other, you have Rose, who vocally demands his own right for his own non-basketball reasons to manage his own minutes, who should still be young enough to bounce back, who has absolutely NO track record of sacrificing for the team or the fans, and whose reign in Chicago has been a non-stop parade of post-season disappointment and failed expectations to show for it all.

It can't be any wonder one of these groups is beloved by the fans and media while the other isn't.

Has he done this repeatedly, or just in that one awkwardly phrased recent quote? If it's a regular thing that would change my impression of him.

Also, I don't know what it means to have a track record of sacrificing for the team or the fans. Rose had no obligation to even rehab aggressively from the serious injuries he's already suffered. Every strenuous rehab activity he's undertaken since his first major injury was by definition for the team and the fans, since his money is guaranteed and his current deal + endorsement money is more than he and his family will ever need. Who has more of a track record of sacrificing for the team and the fans than Rose? Also, seems like you're conflating results and effort.
