Compare and contrast:

DALLAS -- Kobe Bryant considers the public pressure for longtime NBA stars to take hometown-discount deals, such as Dirk Nowitzki's contract, "a big coup" for NBA owners.

"It's the popular thing to do," Bryant said after the Los Angeles Lakers' shootaround in preparation for Friday's game against Nowitzki's Dallas Mavericks. "The player takes less, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I think it's a big coup for the owners to put players in situations where public perception puts pressure on them to take less money. Because if you don't, then you get criticized for it.

"It's absolutely brilliant, but I'm not going for it. I know the new head of the players' association ain't going for it, either."

Kobe Bryant said hometown-discount deals are "a big coup" for NBA owners.
Bryant, 36, agreed to a two-year, $48.5 million extension with the Lakers last season, when he was recovering from a torn Achilles tendon. The deal is for less than Bryant was eligible to make on a maximum contract but still makes him the highest-paid player in the league.

Nowitzki, 36, re-signed with the Mavs this summer for $25 million over three years, taking far less than his market value to leave Dallas owner Mark Cuban enough salary-cap space to make roster upgrades.

What does Bryant think about Nowitzki, who has never used an agent, taking such a steep hometown discount?

"I think it means he's not playing in Los Angeles," Bryant said with a laugh.

Nowitzki, who has made more than $200 million during his career, has said several times that the chance to win a second championship is much more important to him than money during his basketball golden years. The Mavs, whose offseason acquisitions included center Tyson Chandler and small forward Chandler Parsons, are off to a 9-3 start.

hey todem brohan are you the guy that said aaron rogers would never be anything and would get cut i just want to know if i am remembering right thanks in advance and as always take that to the bank
I wish the SWC account and the Timmy Schochet account would do one of those 80's movie magical place changing things. It would be no less than amazing to see "them" pull this off.

Magic come from 23 down to beat Charlotte.

Fournier with another really good game.
Perhaps they finally have a competent GM. I really like what I've seen from Fournier and Payton. I doubt they compete for the playoffs but I will act like it for the time being.

I loved Hennigan from day 1. I didn't like his coaching hire but everything else he's done has been great. Look how he acquired Vucevic, Harris and Fournier. Very deft.

I think they can definitely compete for the 8 seed in the east. Will take 38-40 wins.

Wonder why Love's offensive rebounding keeps going down. Steady decline in his ORB% over his career.

Pretty obvious, his 3pt attempts have gone way up, taking him away from hoop

Sick Bogut to Curry to Bogut alley opp!

I love this team sooooo much.

After suffering through so many ####ty teams the basketball Gods have given us a beautiful, beautiful team.

Man, I love all of this making fun of the Sixers. I hope they let Embiid come back in late winter, and we can see Noel and Embiid just abuse fools who try to come into the paint. I love all of these sportscastors talking #### about the team, this team will be spanking fools in a year or 2. :boxing:

I have no idea who that person was in the Kevin Seraphin jersey last night but it was nice to finally see him play a solid overall game for once. His D and rebounding were tremendous and he also pitched in with 12 off the bench in what was easily his best game of his career.

Love getting a win over the struggling Heat Cavs and Lebron.

The Bulls on the second game of a back-to-back and without Rose, Gasol and the Captain look absolutely run down.
Ran into the buzz-saw Blazers who make lots of teams look run down. :flex:

Always a good night when Leonard Meyers hits a 3....he could teach Kobe how to shoot one.

In a year?

There is seriously no way to watch this team. I keep trying, because I want to see MCW and Nerlens coming along, but I turn on the game and they are losing 57-35 at home. It is unfathomable. This team is like the Indians from Major League combined with the Washington Generals combined with a pile of ####.

I imagine Brett Brown going home at night and lying on his pool table with a revolver in his mouth, Davey Scatino style.

Spanking fools in Philly means 20 wins.
