Best tournament I can remember.
Really? Actual games seem pretty mediocre in terms of quality of game play. It is getting better, which is what you would expect in the E8. Not really sure what makes this year any better in terms of games but these refs and amounts of reviews really make this tourney rather forgettable. 2 seconds left and it takes 5 minutes to determine who the ball went off of?
You should probably find another sport to follow, or a take up a new hobby or something like that. If you find this tourney rather forgettable, then college basketball just isn't for you. Not anything there's anything wrong with you or with the sport; just saying you and the sport are a lousy fit.
So you think this is the best tournament you can remember?

You have 5 minutes to draw up a play and that is what you come up with.

Go home Arizona, you're drunk.
Great post.
Yeah that sucked. He didn't even get the shot off.
I rewatched that play a bunch of times to try to figure out if what they ran was what was called. At first glance, I thought Johnson was a decoy and the real play was a delay lob for Gordon cutting to the basket, but the inbounder panicked and threw it to Johnson because he was open.

After further review... I think Johnson was the second option, and the inbounder read the defense as conceding the easy entry to Johnson to prevent a pass towards the basket because of how the inbounder's man was cheating towards the basket and how Johnson's man wasn't chasing Johnson around the double screen. IMO the inbounder passed to Johnson because he didn't think anything closer to the hoop would open up. I concede that analysis may be a bit generous to Miller and the inbounder, because Johnson dribbling to his left to shoot a contested midrange jumper is a win for the defense.

I was impressed by how much ground Johnson covered on his move until I noticed how much of the action occurred after the buzzer sounded.

Unrelated note... is it just me, or was the sideline demeanor of both head coaches in this game comparable with the ringside antics of heel managers in professional wrestling? Swap the whiteboard for a tennis racquet, and Sean Miller was doing a pretty good Jim Cornette impression on the sidelines today. And Bo Ryan had a bit of a James J. Dillon vibe going.

False dilemma. There are several valid responses other than "rather forgettable" and "best tournament ever".I don't think it's fair to make a ruling on the entire tournament until the tournament finishes. However, I thought the first Thursday/Friday games were great fun with a lot of close finishes. The game that ended on a buzzer-beater wasn't on most folks' short list for Game Of The Weekend. The 32 Round games, especially Sunday's set, were great entertainment. The Wichita State/Kentucky game was worthy of a Final Four slobberknocker, and I found the UNC/Iowa State game compelling and fun because of its pace and close finish.

The most underrated game of the tournament was Arizona/San Diego State late Thursday night. High intensity from both teams, hot crowd for a neutral site regional round game, big plays and big errors from both sides, and the storyline of a guard missing his first ten shots from the field and hitting a bunch of free throws down the stretch was a fun subplot. East coast folks probably missed it because it finished so late, but it was a great game.

Sprinkle in a couple close games on Friday night and an OT thriller today, and it's been quite a show so far. Sorry you've missed it. I think it's foolish to call any NCAA Tournament "best tournament ever" before the Final Four is set, but IMO this tournament exited "rather forgettable" territory quite some time ago.

Official review is ruining basketball at all levels. If a defender is diving and tomahawking the ball out of bounds, just let the call stand. I don't care if the other player's fingernail is involved.

That's the hard part about the possession reviews. The first 38 minutes, if the defender comes in from behind like that it goes to the offense unless it goes off another body part.

Don't let the refs determine what is a good tournament. 7 OTs so,far I believe that is a record.
Agreed. This tourney has been enjoyable as any in recent memory. IMO, the right amount of early upsets and close games and 7(!!!) OTs. The "level of play" isn't what I remember from the 70s/80s but that's mainly because the power schools are so young. Though, I will say the Wichita/Kentucky game last Sunday was on an incredibly high level of both skill and excitement.

just a word of warning, though most of you already know this, don't bet on the Badgers
This isn't really a hindsight post, but why did you think that coming in?

I didn't really think Final Four for them, but I definitely thought Elite Eight for sure.

I have a standing rule not to bet on them or against them.

Mainly because I think they are capable of beating anyone...but also very capable of losing to complete crap teams.

Playing damn good ball right now though.

And not only do I hate Dish Network and would never want them...their commercials have made me want to punch a kangaroo.

Shame that one of the great college basketball games was influenced by a horrific charging call vs Arizona.
I feel for zona fans. No idea how you can make that call in that situation. Almost the equivalent of calling PI on a hail mary on the last play of an nfl game. Wisc was great and deserved the win but you can not make that call. Nickle-dimer that happens 20 times a game that's called about 35% of the time.

Zona had a chance to win at the end. They only have themselves to blame.
I don't think they have to blame anyone. Wisconsin played great. Great game. It's still a terrible call though. 3 seconds left in a one point(?) game to decide who goes to the final four. You can't make that call there. Imagine how many all-time great moments in sports might never have been if that guy was reffing.

Way too much talk about this call. He missed the shot anyway and WIS had 3 guys under the rim to snatch the rebound.

1. it wasn't a charging call

2. it probably worked in Zona's favor.. if no call Wiscy grabs the rebound and goes to the FT line and Zona has to go the length of the floor down 2 or 3 with no timeouts.

other than that, great tweet Al.

Whistle intermittently blared before he got it up, can't say he would have missed it anyway. We'll never know.

The refs only called this 6 times last night. They needed that 7th call to fulfill the quota. Mission accomplished.

And the worst call of the game
Not even close.

There was definitely a case for that foul to be called as Johnson clearly pushed him off. But at that point int he game it's not usually called, I'll give you that.

Easily the worst call was the blocking foul on Kaminsky in the first half when that was CLEARLY a Charge.

But the refs were so bad during the entire game that nothing surprised me there.

Who cares if it worked out in zona's favor? It was a lousy call made 100 times worse given the situation. Fans of the game upset as much as zona fans. Then they go to the monitor for 5 minutes after the inbounds play. Atrocious way to end such a great game.

The refs reall did screw that game. The charge call was debatable. I thought it was right on the edge and if it were me I wouldn't have called it. Not there, with 3 seconds left.

But then to review the out of bounds call for 5 minutes and overturn it - that was just about the worst thing I've ever seen. Seriously. The fact that it took you 5 minutes to come to a decision means that it was not indisputable.

Those refs should be canned for that decision.

It was an offensive foul in my eyes but one of the weakest variety that doesn't get called the majority of the time. I also agree with those who said he missed the shot and Wisky was getting the board. I don't see how that player is changing his shot because he heard the whistle. Sucks that everyone is talking about the ref after such an amazing game.

If that ref is the same guy from the Duke/Cuse game he needs to not be doing big games anymore.

So the unders in both games tomorrow have to hit, right? All 4 teams playing have really slow tempos.
The totals right now are 139.5 for MSU/UConn, and 141-142 for UM/UK.

Factor in the spreads, and Vegas is projecting about 72-67 Sparty, and 72-70 Cats.

The totals seem about right. If anything, I like both dogs.

+5.5 seems like a lot for UConn, especially if you think both teams will slow it down.

UK is such a wild card they're almost impossible to cap, but making them a 2-point favorite over UM is a lot of faith in them.

While it was a call that probably shouldn't have been made, it was nullified a few seconds later by the refs reversing the out of bounds call anyway, right? Johnson missed the shot during the charge, and then got the ball back anyway.

Why do they give the ee Saturday teams games vs the Sunday ee teams? Seems a slight bit unfair to have the extra rest.

Michigan doesn't play slow. They can and I think they may try to against UK, but I wouldn't call Michigan a slow tempo team. They like to push the ball and get open 3s in transition.
