Was surprised to see how effective Azubuike (this guys needs a nickname in the worst way) was in the Duke game. He's a powerful dude. How long until he's starting ahead of Lucas? Azu might bring some offense that we know Lucas doesn't have.

Jackson has sick penetration game. After so many disappointing one and dones like Henry, Selby, McClemore, Wiggins, Diallo, ... perhaps Jackson is the messiah we've been waiting for?
I like that Jackson is trying to play both ends, too.  His off-ball defense still needs work and he relies on his arms too much, but he makes good choices when his man has the ball in front of him and his transition defense is already very good.

Jackson's penetration skills will only improve, and since he doesn't have the burden of breaking down defenses by himself he will break out even sooner.  I like how well he tracks the ball when he doesn't have it - he's stolen some offensive rebounds flying in from the perimeter.  He's going to get some dunks in half court driving in on a scrambling defense after Mason or Graham broke down and kicked the ball out to him.

Duke escapes with two workmanlike performances especially on a back to back.

Need to get healthy. Allen is hurt on top of the freshmen and Jeter. Kennard, Jones and Jefferson are doing what is asked. Frank Jackson has been a welcome surprise although got a little rattled at the end.

Team can win ugly but missing those 3 bigs, have no idea what this team looks like in March.

Uninspiring win for KU over UGA in a "neutral" court in KC.

Self has made it clear the team will go as far as Mason and Graham will take them, and they expect great things from Josh Jackson.

Haven't quite found the right mix for the 4th and 5th on the floor yet.

Hopeful the whistles relax a little as the season goes on.

Shout-out to the Fort Wayne Mastadons taking down Indiana tonight.

Kudos to Indiana for playing Fort Wayne at Fort Wayne.

Indiana fans upset about no-calls on a late OT possession with the ball down one have a legit beef.

Nice win y the Gamecocks today vs Michigan.

Next up, Syracuse @ the Barclay Center on Saturday.
I just want to thank college basketball and cable television for all these great intersectional matchups all over the continent in November and December.  It's so cool they have a system set up where programs have a lot of financial and competitive incentive to seek out and participate in these games.

Well the Gamecocks finished a 2-0 week with a win over Syracuse.  Time to show up in the rankings.

Now let's make it 2-0 vs "Orange " today.

AP Poll -  1. Villanova 2. UCLA 3. Kansas 4. Baylor 5. Duke 6. Kentucky 7. UNC 8. Gonzaga 9. Indiana 10. Creighton

For all of their combined history, when is the last time UCLA, Kansas, Duke, Kentucky, UNC and Indiana were all Top 10 at the same time?

Seriously?  WTF.  Gonzaga beats Arizona on a neutral court and doesn't move up with 3 teams ahead of them losing.

1994.  O'Bannon and Edney set up UCLA's title run the next year, KU reloaded with Vaughn and Pollard after going to Final Four, Grant Hill was a senior in the year before K's back surgery, UK was coming off Final Four losing Mashburn but getting more shots for Delk and McCarty, UNC added Rasheed Wallace and Jerry Stackhouse to four returning starters from their title team, Indiana snuck into the top 10 with some big games from Damon Bailey and Alan Henderson.

Carlton Bragg is done at Kansas.  He spent the night at the county jail due to an alleged domestic violence incident.  Apparently he is only soft on the court.  No place for that in Lawrence.

This  UCLA/MI game is completely insane. 44-41 M with 3 mins left in the first half. M has 12 3s. And UCLA is like 7-10 from 3.

That's a different Michigan team than the one the Gamecocks faced the day before Thanksgiving. South Carolina held them to 10 total FGS and 46 points for the game.

Lonzo Ball just hit a shot from the logo to tie it at half - 50-50.

Insane first half. Best half of the season.
Michigan wasn't just hitting their threes - their makes weren't even hitting the rim.  Full "On Fire" mode.   Ball has imbued UCLA with a pass-first mentality that is great to see especially with a team that has a lot of shooters.  T.J. Leaf had such a great shake move (go 0:24 - he didn't hit the shot but still followed up for an and 1) in the post - as much attention as Ball gets (deservedly so), Leaf has merited just as much attention so far.  Love his game.

Fortunately, the Wolverines cooled off in the second half, while the Bruins continued to score points as they've done all season.  Fun team to watch.

Charges were dropped today.  Video surveillance footage showed he was acting in self-defense.

Haven't seen the video, but descriptions paint a picture there were no winners in this incident.  Bragg got into an argument with a woman, she put her hand on him near his neck, hit him in the chest a few times, then he forcefully shoved her away into some ascending stairs.  Woman hurt her elbow from contact with the staircase.

Police report says 1000 block of Emery Road.  That's mostly fraternity and sorority houses, right?

Haven't seen anything about Bragg's status with the team or his scholarship.

The most effective five-man lineup so far has been the small-and-blinding-fast grouping of Mason, Graham, Vick, Jackson, and Azubuike.  Mykhailiuk is much improved and can play SF or PF in the new offense.  Landen Lucas is a fifth-year senior who will be fine as a backup center.
Would be nice to have Bragg back as an eighth man, but if this incident isn't isolated I'm fine with cutting him loose.  Even with the charges dropped, still uncomfortable with the events as described.

I am very happy for Carlton and video surveillance.  He was on the bench Saturday and KU had no games this week - finals. I haven't read much today on the details but it sounds like the gal is going to get charged instead.

I feel bad for jumping to conclusions on Bragg - i hope he is successful and can rebound from this incident.

The area where the incident took place is near Greek housing.  Nice neighborhood with a lot of professor housing.  We park very close to there to walk to basketball and football games.

There's been enough off-court trouble during the Self era to figure there was some fire with that smoke.  I was stunned when the news broke that surveillance video exonerated him.

Like you, I hope he's successful and rebounds from this.  Incident or no incident, it's likely he would have lost his starting spot to Vick or Svi given the small-ball fastbreaking system installed this year.  But the team will need good bench minutes from him when the conference schedule grinds, and during the postseason there's big difference between having eight players you can trust versus seven.

So, that Malik Monk kid can shoot the rock a little, huh?
He seems to love the big moments too.  You don't see many freshmen with the mid-range off the dribble game he has.

Both guards are pretty special.  Easy to lose sight of in the Monk explosion was Fox's 24 points and 10 assists.  He got to the paint pretty much any time he wanted yesterday.  Reminds me of a young Russell Westbrook. Fox is actually ahead of Ullis's school record assist pace from last year.

Very fun team to watch the way they get it up and down the court.  There are some worries defensively, but I trust Cal to get that fixed by March.  They look dominant defensively against weaker teams, but UNC and UCLA both scored a ton of easy buckets.

That must have been one hell of a halftime speech from Self.

FWIW, I hope Davidson runs the table in conference play and we have a KU/Davidson rematch in Phoenix.
Kansas just ratcheted up the defense the defense and their length and athleticism just made it too hard for Davidson to operate.  I suddenly realized in the unc game that the length of these power 5 teams is much more important than their size inside, because the thicket they can create is really disruptive to the motion offense we rely on.  Gibbs and Aldridge gave superhuman individual efforts in the second half against unc to make it close, but they just couldn't do anything in the second half yesterday.  If only KU could have continued going 0-fer from three the whole game.

Unc, Kentucky, duke and Kansas all seem to be totally stacked, plus nova has obviously started great.  Seems like it should be a really fun season overall.

Brutal loss at home to Northeastern for Michigan State last night. They are 7-5 with one more non-con game left versus Oakland. That's not a guaranteed win for MSU at this point.

MSU looking at a realistic chance of missing the tournament.

They're pretty much screwed with the injury situation. The team they put on the court last night would finish at or near the bottom of the Big Ten.

When they get Miles Bridges back they'll be competitive, but still terribly undersized. I've seen Izzo drag teams into the tournament that probably didn't belong there, but this would be his best work yet if he pulls it off.

That 2010-11 squad went 19-15 and made it to the second round and shouldn't have even sniffed the tournament that year.  They've played a brutal early season schedule, four of those losses were at the hands of top 10 teams (Zona, Kentucky, Baylor, Duke).. and they are very young. What's killing them is their defensive intensity, abysmal free throw percentage and having no true floor leader figured out yet.  I'm fairly confident they'll pull it together more going forward.  The freshman have to grow much faster than others have in the past for sure.

Do Iowa fans like Fran McCaffery? He's such a child.

I don't know why HS kids would want to play for him. Spend four years getting screamed at constantly by a guy with a serious anger management problem? I'll pass.

Outside of those 5, who do y'all think can win the NCAAs? I'm thinking Indiana, but that's a boring choice.
I think if someone outside the top tier does it, you've got a group of good teams with good coaches lurking.

West Virginia, Arizona, and Wisconsin come to mind.

I also think the Gators could be a dangerous sleeper to get deep.

UCLA and Oregon have very good teams as well.

UCLA was mentioned before.

Oregon is ranked 22 in KenPom and hasn't beaten anyone ranked higher than 74 this season, having lost its only two games against teams ranked higher than that.  But your dedication to the Oregon :homer:   shtick is tremendous.

Also for those who might have missed it the UNC NCAA mess is messier again and allegations mentioning the basketball team might come back into play.  I've given up tracking the details at this point, but Jay Bilas' twitter can give you the lowdown if you're so inclined.

We will see very soon if Oregon is for real when they play UCLA next week.  I am sure you realize that Oregon was without their best player 1st team All American Dillon Brooks when they lost at Baylor.

I was unaware that Oregon was without Brooks when they lost to a Baylor team that was beaten by Yale in the first round of the tournament last year and then lost their best player to the NBA draft and added no freshmen of significance.  Obviously this changes everything.
Please stop being so stupid.  I know you are a ACC honk so nobody outside the ACC can possibly be very good.  Baylor is a very good team, ranked 4 right now.  If we are talking about last year we have an Oregon team who was a 1 seed and Elite 8 team who beat your precious Duke team.  Oregon only lost 1 starter from last years team and gained a solid senior guard transfer from Villanova who was supposed to play last year but got hurt.

All that said, Oregon has not been playing as well as they should be to date but with Brooks getting healthy they have Final 4 potential.
