NCAA HOOPS THREAD! -- K petitions to get Maui Jim Maui Invitational moved to Transylvania (1 Viewer)

I'm going to cut Miller some slack here.  I once accidently brought home a couple of ballpoint pens from the office.

My view is that we all, on occasion, make mistakes stemming from work.

Head of the NCAA makes about 2 million. What a joke. This whole farce they are running is busted badly. That dude needs to get #### canned immediately.
See, here we find some common ground.

Honestly, if the NCAA investigated the NCAA, post-seasons would be banned for a minimum of two years...

We didn't hide behind attorneys. That's just not what our school is about. It's about openness, taking responsibility and teaching young people to do what is just and right. You'll read this post and chuckle thinking it's a joke but that's because you were never taught that life is not about winning, it's about how you play. It's about the journey, not the destination. If Syracuse had 8 titles and they were UNC or Kentucky level of dirty, I know I wouldn't be proud about them. I surely would never gloat about them. I probably would never tell anyone I even attended the school. Lucky for me I'll never have to do that because we compete the right way. I'll always be proud to let people know where I went to school and what we are all about. If and when UNC receives the death penalty and Roy has to walk away in shame, maybe you can watch and root quietly from a distance for a school like ours, a school that doesn't only celebrate banners and accomplishment but celebrates hard work, playing by the rules and winning not just on the court but in life.
Inspiring. Mind if I print this out and laminate it to share with the Syracuse grads that wait on my table next time I’m in Manhattan?

Shareef O'Neal decommits from Arizona

"At this time I'm am opening up my recruitment due to the current events with the UofA Bball team.I would like to thank all the coaches for recruiting me. At the time my family and I think it's in my best interest to look at other options to assure my play in the NCAA next year."

Which I think roughly means;

"No way UofA will pay me what was negotiated. I would like to take this opportunity to remind the other coaches who recruited me that I am 'back in play'.  Please make a good offer - good enough that we'll never have to watch my dad in another horrible, horrible commercial."

I guess Shareef don't like it.

Solid loss for Nova, should bump them up. Definitely solidifies Nova as a 1 seed

Really showed a lot of resolve in losing that 8 point lead and letting it get into overtime before falling. That’s how it’s done

I don't know if anyone ever answered why the government should care about this, but I'd imagine it starts with taxes that aren't being collected from this amateur sport.
I think the coaches have provisions in their contracts about not breaking NCAA rules or something, not sure of the details, that leave them open to federal fraud charges.

Listening to a podcast a few months ago, it was being postulated that some guy who was running a suit hustle got pinched for something and gave up people for reduced sentencing and now it's making its way up the ladder.

Most school receive  money from the US government for a variety of things including athletics. Shouldn't be a surprise they would investigate if they assume there is something illegal going on.

Just awful, keep the political crap out of this thread.
The growing debate about compensation for college athletes is inherently political. And if you like I'll go dig up the research showing correlation between continuing to support "amateurism" and racist views about society in general.

After my nap, of course.

It is extremely ignorant to infer race has anything to do with what I posted, sorry.  Race card is brought up far to often and it is disgusting.

You know, as a fellow Ducks' fan it pains me to do this, but I feel compelled to say this to you now.

When you claimed you had never heard of The Allman Brothers before, I thought it was some sort of Tanner like schtick; peculiar but perhaps humorous on some level.  Then two seasons ago, you thought Oregon would wax Washington yet again despite me telling you they were about to get abused and they lost by 60.  Maybe, I thought, you were just clouded by your famdom.  And then you fell in love with Trump and I winced as you defended him, but alone you were not in your seduction of the Orange Droolius.

Like an aging dotard, I pitied you and felt like maybe you were sheltered and just didn't know any better.  But now, with these posts, it is absolutely clear to me:  you've never even picked up, let alone read, a history book have you?   And this greatly saddens me because you are a product of Oregon public education, where 5 of my children go to school.  To have no grasp of our history frightens me tremendously.  I feel like I need to move or homeschool my kids.  I think you are a smart man, I've seen it on display in other threads, but my god, you are really ignorant of our history.

Disagree.  If it comes down to paying athletes then the pay they receive should be the same if they go to Ohio State or California.   Otherwise, you will just continue to have the same elite teams dominate every year.
Wow, the same elite teams dominating college sports every year imagine if that happened.

I'll take random thoughts for $400 Alex.  Not sure what any of this has to do with what I posted.  A bit of the rails for you GM.

Back to the argument at hand, you equated race with politics (rightly) and said it didn't have any place in this thread (wrongly*). The concept of a "student-athlete" is a canard. Basketball players or football players whose labor directly generates money for their school should be treated as employees, not put in some made-up box that was created by the NCAA decades ago in order to give themselves a reason for justifying their existence.**

If you really have an issue with young adults getting paid, fine. That's a dumb opinion, because they're working for the benefit of the university, just like a student who punches tickets at a parking garage, but fine. Do you have an issue with junior league hockey players getting paid? Or soccer players on youth squads? Maybe you do, but I'd be surprised if you had ever even thought about it.

But, there are most certainly some people that oppose student-athletes getting paid because the idea of a young POC getting money (or, having a piece of the pie that they're generating) bothers them on a deep level. To deny that is to just deny that racism exists towards black people in the US, which is a ####### ridiculous premise. To say "OK, you can get paid but you can only make a flat amount no matter where you go" is nearly as ridiculous.

And, really, most college athletes who play revenue-generating sports are paid, just not officially. As we've seen. Ayton got paid. certainly a lot of other dudes got paid too. It will always happen. Even after whatever this FBI investigation is, it'll never stop until it's just regulated.

To be clear, this was about Short Corner's post that said "Can't be letting those brown kids have any leverage" and nothing else.  I took offense to that as he quoted GM referring to me.  Carry on.

 All my likes.

Mixed feelings about it but I tend to believe it makes sense to wait until they are professionals for that.  I received a full ride for baseball Div 1 and having my education and room and board paid for me was great.
That’s cool but Baseball isn’t a revenue generating sport in college. We’re just talking about football and to a lesser extent hoops players here, cause they make the money.

Also, why would you be against the players getting paid. Rather old white administrators pocket it? It’s not like it dissolves.

You were probably interested in an education.

I'm also guessing - but don't know - that you did not grow up in abject poverty and had a supportive family.

I just can’t believe there is anybody who answers “no” to the question “hey should the people doing all the work and driving all the revenue make money?”

Absolutely crazy to me.

Are you against all college students making money or just scholarship athletes?
