There's a common misunderstanding about the order of operations.

Multiply doesn't necessarily come before divide, and adding doesn't necessarily come before subtraction. They stand on equal footing. When we come to a choice between M/D and A/S we work from left to right. Hence the misunderstanding in the original post. The divide needs to be completed before the multiply which in some minds runs counter to the PEMDAS mnemonic.

I agree with that. The mnemonic is fine so long as you understand the MD and AS operate as left-to-right groups. I'm sure a lot of people forget that over time. I did!

We need a new mnemonic where the MD are together in one word and AS are together in one word. The cruder it is, the easier it'll be to remember. Any suggestions?
