Multiply doesn't necessarily come before divide, and adding doesn't necessarily come before subtraction. They stand on equal footing. When we come to a choice between M/D and A/S we work from left to right. Hence the misunderstanding in the original post. The divide needs to be completed before the multiply which in some minds runs counter to the PEMDAS mnemonic.
