New TV Show "Designated Survivor" (1 Viewer)

Just watched the second episode. I was pleasantly surprised. I thought it was going to be really dumb and conspiracy and family based. But they are still keeping with the rebuilding gov't theme - which is BY FAR the more interesting.

I would've like to have seem him tell them all to SHUT THE #### UP when they were yelling in his office - but that will come.

The Michigan story was annoying. Especially if you know the relationship between the Dearborn police and the local residents. Its hard to believe that would happen.
A friend of mine is the Mayor of Westland... He had a pretty good article in the Free Press addressing this issue..

Detroit Free Press

I would have to guess Dearborn was chosen at random and not because of any misconception. Everything isnt a personal attack.

It obviously wasn't chosen at random. Dearborn has the largest Arab population in the US. But its a place where the police and the community work pretty well together. Because of that its hard to imagine the fictional scenario presented in Designated Survivor.

And if you read the articles, they aren't angry, condemning articles. The authors understand its a fiction. Its just a disappointment that the writers would chose to portray the area in that way. Not a huge deal, just seems like lazy writing to rely on tired stereotypes.

As an FYI - actual quotes from the real people

As Dearborn Police Chief Ron Haddad told the Free Press about a 2015 White House summit to combat violent extremism in Muslim communities, "Dearborn was invited because it's recognized as a place where it's already been proven to be a success."

...

And Michigan is a place where Gov. Rick Snyder has made real efforts to reach out to Arab-American communities. When GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump proposed banning all Muslims from entering America, real-life Michigan Gov. Snyder, a Republican, called the plan "absolutely inappropriate."

“I’ve been quite clear that I’m proud of the fact that we have the largest Arab-American community in the United States here in Michigan. I think it’s great,” Snyder told WWJ-AM (950), adding that the state's large Arab-American community "represents wonderful, wonderful diversity. What great contributions to our society in Michigan they’re making, and we’re all Michiganders together."

Good restaurants there too.

Just as the show ended last night...

Me:  He's really not going to punch anyone in this show, is he?

Wife: No.  Get over it.

Me: Fine

I get the decorum of the office and everything.  I really do.  But in that moment, when President Jack (that's what I'm calling him) arrested the Governor, there had to be a part of him that just wanted to deck the guy.  Like right before the handcuffs, just a right hook to the jaw.  And it would have been massively enjoyable.

This show gets better each episode.  Everything he has done so far is totally believable.  I'm a little unhappy that this episode jumped a week though.  The minute to minute crisis of this kind of thing is more interesting than anything else to me, but they made it work.  The cast is solid.  I do repeat my earlier post though - why isn't there a Senate?  There has to be a Senate by now.  There is no reason not to.  And frankly, after a week, there should be a temporary cabinet, even if its just the highest ranking guys from each executive office that is left.  If they get too much farther into the story without a functioning Senate it's going to bug me more than it probably should.

It's off to a great start so far! I wanted President Jack to deck the Governor too or maybe the female aide he sent should have kicked him in the nuts.

I was hoping President Jack would grab the Governor and whisper in his ear

“The only reason that you’re conscious right now is because I don’t want to carry you.”

Enjoyed the first few episodes but last episode not too much. Michigan governor's decision didn't ring true and the Prez's wife still practicing law is obvious conflict of interest.

Want to like this show but some of the contrivances that crapped out later seasons of 24 appeared in this episode.

This guy is really taking the job seriously.  Love that he has to 'remind' everyone in every discussion who they are talking to.

Liking the show.  What time frame are we looking at now?   Has there actually been enough time to hold elections?  Are we talking primaries and actual campaigning?  Is the public even ready for that?  So many questions?

The Governors should have appointed Senators. I think that would happen basically immediately. I think there would be a big push to get that done right away to preserve the check on President Jack's power.

He should also be having discussions about who to appoint to the Supreme Court.

 Yeah, you're right.

We are a week after the explosion when the last episode started. They covered two days there. So at most we are two weeks into the timeline.

That is no time for elections of any kind, so there won't be a House anytime soon. But the Senate can be appointed by the Governors to full a term or in an emergency. That should have happened already.

On top of all of that, there should absolutely be a vice president like yesterday. With an active threat to the government, it should be the first priority. Something happens to him and with a bunch of junior staffers filling cabinet positions, who knows who is president next.

Really no excuse for not having one in the first 12 hours after the attack. Some governor should have been appointed.
Yeah, I've reluctantly bowed out due to stuff like this and it's gone down some roads I'm not interested in seeing them pursue.

It's weird, but I think this will actually be a better binge watch than waiting a week for each episode.  It's a subconscious thing, but even if this show is supposed to be happening over the course of days we're seeing it over the course of weeks.  Binge watching might make the events seem more immediate.

Some of the political machinations stuff is infuriating.  For example, the Chief of Staff is an easy fix:  There have to be a half-dozen ex COS's running around various law firms in DC.  Any competent person in his shoes picks up the phone and gets an experienced hand in *immediately*.  He doesn't choose between a lightweight Deputy CIO or a 20-something true believer.  So silly.  Of course, that wouldn't make good tv.  So. . . . there's that.

The best thing about the show is we got to see the first lady naked a lot in Californication.

Well, the show's pretty good without thinking about that, but man, I sure do like her.

HUGE fan of her.

Is this pre-empted tonight?  Because the juxtaposition of this show being on while the debate is happening is delicious.

The week off hurt this show and then the election... but got caught up.

I hated the governors scenes. Totally ruined the story for me. They don't get to hold the Senate hostage. The whole conspiracy is fine if not predictable. But I keep harping on the Senate. I'm going to need to force myself to suspend more disbelief or stop watching.

Hate it when they end a season like that. Really enjoyed the show so far though.
Well at least it was just the "mid-season Finale" and we only have to wait until March instead of next Fall.

So VP is being forced to be VP and x-FBI director was forced to confess by some entity. And VP'S wife seems to be in it as well...... "whatever it takes" :oldunsure:

Cliff hanger was dumb but I'm enjoying the series. It's basically 24 except Jack is the president and Maggie Q is Jack.

VP's wife is Clearly pulling the VP's strings.. Guy will break fast once they apply pressure..

It was a guarantee that once the President went in for surgery there would be "complications" that almost kill him... It is Predictable writing that can kill a series.. Also hated the VP ordering the death of an assassin .. Like any non-corrupt person would want the death of the only person that might have Intel on why/who.

Luckily they "cleaned" it up afterwards having Maggie show up in his room telling him that VP is definitely behind the attack and the assignation attempt.

wait til' next week!

I know a lot of you guys were 24 fans, and are probably enjoying some of the shared strings here. I enjoyed 24 for a season or so, but found it ridiculous way too often (and the mountain lion was my shark-jumping moment of non-watching)... finding a lot of this equally goofy. lazy, cliched writing as snogger mentioned, but I think I'm just finding the overall story-arc of the conspiracy completely ridiculous.. makes it hard to get involved with the show for me.

How far was that van that it took so long to get close enough to stop that shooting?

Shocker. Feel bad for Atwood. They let him out to be with his family huh...

Really enjoying this show..
Love how all the Conspirators are going down one at a time.. VP and wife..Murder/Suicide.  Woman who seemed to have been running the show... Suicide by FBI  ..
One of the few shows where being a "bad guy" is bad for your health.

The Speech by Sutherland to "reunite" the country... Could really use a president like that right now

Now onto finding out who is behind all of it.. The last video showing how to destroy the Golden Gate Bridge and the Statue of Liberty is troubling to say the least.

W&M Town Hall! Woooo, go Tribe!

That definitely is not W&M. <_<

This show is almost so bad it's good. Republicans passing gun background checks, jack bauer as president, the alt-right being a violent military group, good looking chief of staff and first lady, hot FBI agent.

:bag:

still watching... but yeah. not good. preachy AND eye-rolly (maggie killing the special ops guy in a fight... yeah- ok).
Stuff with Kirkman and team: ok. Stuff with Maggie/Lozano: :lmao: Lozano with the constant mean-mug is double :lmao:

Emily:

I don't think lozano even had a line until the very end there. just lots of angry scowling. also impressive how quickly he can jump from a car-wreck.

Really enjoyed the first season.. Agree these last couple episodes had some REAL  moments with Maggie... I just hit this car, I'll run around the entire other side of the Van.. Oh wait, he went around the other side and got behind me?? No way!!

But otherwise, I enjoyed how the conspiracy played out.. Although, once you figured out it was an inside job, wouldn't one of the first things you'd do is figure out who is left that could have put you on the designated Survivor list?

Any ways, Liked how they ended season one to take us into season two
