New York Jets 2007 Offseason (1 Viewer)

4. Defensive End: We need to re-sign Bryan Thomas. I love this guy. He's an active player and always chases hard after the QB. If somehow we don't resign him, I would love to make a run at Dwight Freeney (maybe upset about another Colts playoff loss) or Jared Allen.
With a decent cap #, they should try for two DEs. They likely have the inside track on Thomas so just get another.IMO They should get the best "outfielder" they can so they can stunt with Rhodes even more. He's a phenomenal rusher for a Safety. Any O lineman they can add to their 2 young studs would be a good move. They need TEs to run the New England offense better. Their WRs are far better than the Pats and that's a luxury between the 20s but they need a TE that can muscle the defender around in the red zone. Baker's fine but he's no thoroughbred. I'm a Pats fan very nervous that they'll "steal" Daniel Graham this offseason. Chatham is not a good LBer. Maybe he's a good special teams player but he shouldn't be playing D. They have good LBers then he comes in and there's such a significant drop. They could use some depth at LB.I don't disagree with the original poster about Miller's coverage. Try him at WR or teach him to cover, that guy's got some legs on him you can't teach those moves and speed. With all the trickery Mangini did in 06, I'm surprised he didn't go deep a few times playing WR. Dare the D to stay with him. Even if he doesn't get the ball he just stretched the field. On KR when he's doing well those legs move so fast they're almost a blur. There are times he is NOT running full speed. If you look back at some Jet games you'll see. He could use some more confidence in his wedge, he's just gotta bolt and let it break down how it does. All in all, a great talent that I think will be wasted if he's just a KR.

I repeat.... Bryan Thomas is signed to a five year deal. He isn't a DE either.... he an OLB/rush LB. I'm a Jets fan, but I'm a realist. This team needs, in this order: 1. A true 3-4 DE like Carriker. The Jets got 30 tackles and 1 sack from the DE spot opposite Ellis. Carriker would immediately improve both the run defense and the pass rush. The rest of the DE's in this draft are better suited to the 4-3 or as a tweener. After that, it gets tricky to decide which position is the MOST needed, but here goes. 2. RG/RT- It isn't that the Jets have lousy running backs as much as the offensive line isn't very good at run blocking. After using two first rounders on O linemen last year, with as many other holes as there are, it's hard to imagine the Jets spending another first day pick on a RG or RT, but they might. The sleeper here is this kid Blanton, UCLA I think. He's a RT, and he's freakin HUGE, like 6-6 335. He was activated from the taxi squad for the playoff game, but was inactive. Mangini threw him a bone. That means he likes this kid. Clement, the starting RT this year is as of now, unsigned. 3. CB- Dyson played very well, but after that, it isn't good. Barrett and Poteat are average at best, and Miller... well he's an enigma. This need I think will be addressed in FA... either Samuel or Clements. 4. RB- Balylock is gone. Either Barlow or Houston will be cut. That means the Jets will HAVE to draft an RB, unless they fool me and go after Turner, which I don't expect. How many RB's will be there at the top of the second round that can step in and start? (That means being able to pick up the blitz and pass protect) I don't think that's the popular pick of Bush in the first round. Tony Hunt I see as more likely, and if they don't get Hunt, they may go after Brian Leonard because it appears Askew is gone, and while the Jets don't use a FB a lot, they will still need one. Hunt may be able to play both RB and FB. 5. TE- Yeah, I think they need one, but I also think they will put getting a TE on the back burner with so many other glaring needs. Leonard is versatile enough to play FB/HB/TE too, making him possibly more attractive. 6. OLB- I'm hearing some rumors barton may get cut, and they would move Hobson inside. That depends on whether or not so many people have the Jets taking a 'tweener in the first round are right. New rumor: Eric Smith may beat out Coleman at S...... stay tuned.

some interesting thoughts.FB can be had after the draft as an undrafted free agent most years, almost all the drafts but 1 in the last 7-8 years. NFL teams just seemed to move away from drafting em'.Smith's not ringing any bells. They better not cut Barton unless they've got some vet in line. They need to add depth not lose it. I'm still a big Sowell fan. I don't know why Mangini+co got rid of him(Askew isn't as good as advertised) and Gruden doesn't seem overwhelmed with him either. This is not a deep team, they have to be real careful. Of course any Jets fans hopes is to add to their team. A negative offseason(FA) would really really hurt. They've got some nice pieces to the puzzle and to lose some and not replace em'.......They should lean toward re-signing guys to just not move backwards and deal with the contract later. Alot built this year, just can't take a step backward no matter what.

Bri, while I am a realist, and very few (most laughed) bought into my 7 to 8 win prediction for my Jets this year, I see 8-8 as a likely result next year. The schedule looks very tough, with the NFC East and teams like Baltimore on it besides. While Mangini worked wonders this year, it's still at least a two year rebuild given what Edwards and Bradway left in the arsenal. As far as rsignings go, Hobson, Cotchery and Rhodes have one year left. I expect all of them to be resigned this off season. Barton and Barrett as the rumors go, could get cut. Blaylock is gone, as is Ramsey. There are just too many holes left on this team to be a playoff contender in 2007. Mangini and the rest of the team will have to weather the storm based on unrealistic expectations after getting a WC against a very weak schedule. I can see Clemens getting some snaps in the latter part of 2007 over Chad. We Jet fans DO love Pennington, and he brings a LOT more to the table than many give him credit for, but still.... if the Jets are to be a threat to win it all in 2008, it likely has to be Clemens at the helm, unless the Jets enter the elite in terms of team defense and get a solid running game going. Geeze.... I love this stuff. If nothing else, I have complete faith in Tannenbaum and Mangini. Mangini was roundly critisized for Hiring Brian Schottenheimer. Now, the guy is already interviewing for HC spots. The future never looked so bright.... but there is always the chance it's an oncoming train in the tunnel of love.
