Btw, I dont ever remember smelling as much pot as regularly as I do in the city. All over too, not just my hood.
Smells the same to me. Oh, wait, that's me. :stonedbanana:
how are you feeling, koya? are you back to pre-hfs life, or still recovering?
Doing much better, but a ways to go.

Back to work on a more full time but still limited basis Monday. Past weekend I made it to the bar crawl, getting there at 1... by 4 I was close to done, exhausted. But much much better, no more exposed deep wound and other crap. Much less pain. But still pooping into a bag hanging from me.

Still need to heal up another month, then build up myself a couple more before one last surgery to "reconnect" me.

Appreciate you asking.

Guy got on the 4/5 during morning rush hour yesterday smelling like he took a full ounce and swabbed his entire body with it. Coming home, the 4/5 platform at GC smelled like someone broke out a bong while waiting for a 6. People are getting bold.

If you smoke a J or are carrying some really good stuff not really sealed (like tupperware, not baggie) its gonna smell of it big time.

A couple times I have been walking in the city, and I hear this specific cadance of metal chinkling as it hits the pavement at a high pitch, but usually a couple good seconds of rattling around. Those who have smoked a batty (the old metal kind) know EXACTLY what sound I'm talking about.

the one-hitter?

oh... the wife got a night at a hotel from gilt-city. Parker Meridian, where we've stayed before. Rooms are not great, but it has a 45th floor penthouse indoor swimming pool with huge views of Central Park which makes it worth the trip/stay. baby-sitter stayed the night with the kids. wife and I totally had sex. like for minutes.

we also went to Tao for dinner- my BIL's favorite place when he comes into the city from NoVa. as soon as we walked in, I knew it was going to be... less than stellar. I guess with a group looking for more night at the roxbury club atmosphere than food, it would be decent. dated menu- like they tried Nobu fro the first time and decided to rip it off, but with lesser ingredients and slathered with sauce to make up for it. the sauces were ok, I guess, and definitely did their job hiding whatever the main ingredients were. considering the amount we payed for dinner- I kept looking down at my food and thinking about all the places we could have gone instead for the same amount, but had genuinely good/great food.
Sounds like Pret a Manger would have been better. :P

Mogador! Wow... brings me back to college dates. Loved that place. A little too close to home (literally) and not "special" enough for the ol lady. Will look into the Brazilian place... thanks.

I'm guessing the wife will need me to spend waaaay more for a meal though. Just, you know... because.

I like the vibe of those kinds of restaurants, but if you want more upscale there are lots of places in the city. I prefer places like Casa and Mogador so there are probably others on this board who know more about the fancier places. One place I like that's definitely more upscale and expensive is Periyali (http://www.periyali.com/)

Yeah. Ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding. Oops. Someone just dropped their batty. Oh, there's another white guy in a suit smokin in the middle of manhattan.

I didn't realize the tip of the collapsed crane ended up a block from my kid's Saturday swim lessons. It's a mob scene down here. Makes you think. I park on that corner all the time.

anybody been to haven rooftop?
I was there with a group. We had a reservation to celebrate the holidays. They took us down to the ground floor and set us up in the windowless hotel breakfast room. Literally. With cereal machines and microwaves. Then they tried to stiff us on free drinks they promised, insisting they were never offered but we ALL heard it, eventually telling us that if we insisted on the free drinks it would be coming out of the employee's pay "it's your choice." My friend left a review of that on Yelp. Would go anywhere else.

It is so cold outside! Like wtf kinda cold and just getting colder. I walked 1 block to the store without gloves and my hands were numb. FIL/MIL took my son to NJ for his cousins birthday party, he's sleeping there. We aren't leaving the house today and I couldn't be more excited! About to watch Ted2.

hi Mad Cow...

are you looking to go cheap with the hotel? you don't need to stay near Javits and are better off staying somewhere where better NY life is right outside your door... and there are lots of neighborhoods for that, depending on what kind of stuff you want to see and do.

what kind of stuff do you want to see and do?

So, Peter Luger bacon is now a thing.  AT STORES.

And it's awesome.

Bacon is only reason in even go there.  But if you have a good butcher that has slab bacon then there is zero reason.  However I have no idea iced slab bacon is harder to find nowadays so if this is indeed the thick stuff they may do ok.

Wife and I are looking at a shorter NYC trip in mid-April to get a few hours of CE at Vision East at the Javits Center.  Neither of us have been, so are open to any and all advice for hotel, which airport, transportation, restaurants, things to do or not do, etc.  We would get in Wednesday evening, leave Sunday morning/afternoon.  Thursday and Friday mornings would be booked getting classes in, but the rest is up for debate.

The only real thing we do not need are bar recommendations.  We do not drink, so that is moot.

In before the inevitable bar recommendations.

Thanks for any help you can give.

I am thinking we will take in Les Mis on Thursday night, seems to be several tickets left.

Any hints on getting tickets to things like Fallon, etc.?

Thanks for bumping this.  I am OK spending more to get something nicer.  As long as I can get to the Javits easily and relatively quickly with subway or what not, that is fine.   Would like to hit a musical such as Les Mis and just see the major sights.  Thanks

somewhere at the beginning of this thread, I wrote a giant list of NYC things that came to mind... IIRC, neighborhood and interest driven. I'll try to find the post when I have a sec.

short of that- Javits is easy enough to get to, but in a crap neighborhood... dont' stay nearby. lots of options all over the city at varying price-points- so it will be about what you want to be in and around.

no idea about Fallon, but Letterman and SNL were multiyear deals to get tickets... so good luck.

MC- here's the post (definitely outdated)
Awesome write up!  I wasn't going to search/bump this thread but since its here I'll ask.  I'm heading into the city solo tomorrow night for a show at the Beacon Theater. My 1st trip to the Beacon.  How's the neighborhood around 74th Street?  Figure I'm good heading in, but wondering about the subway on a Saturday night.  I'll also be seeking out some food & a beer and don't know how advisable it is to wander very far off Broadway.

Just gonna head up and scope it out/play it safe but any tips and info are appreciated.

oh... Sat night on the upper west side might be a little rough. look out for these guys

also look out for upper upper middle class white people running you down with their expensive strollers and sense of self-entitlement.

The Beacon Theatre is amazing.  Really enjoyed every show I've been to.  You'll be on the Upper West Side so a little more yuppie/family oriented but plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from.  It's very safe.  Feel free to wander.

:lmao:

FBGs who worry about Manhattan safety always gives me a chuckle.  I understand the concerns if you're not familiar with the city but Manhattan is one of the safest places I've been to in the US

I dunno.  I was assaulted by a few topless women in Times Square and some dude wearing nothing but a guitar.

How brief of a trip?  It's tempting to try to get a Pork Johnson/Eye Doc cornhole on the agenda. But with no drinking or shock paddles, I'm not sure what we'd do. I still haven't done my PC build...

If the wife were not going to be with me, I would say it is a go, but probably not with.  We will get in on a Wednesday evening and leave on Sunday.  I will be taking only about 6 hours of CE.

It's a concrete jungle out there.  Man, remember the easy days? Ahh, the quiet tranquility of Manhattan in the late '70's and '80s.

Hey, if you are dumb enough to saunter around Times Square without taking proper precautions that's on you.  It's a way that NYers can funnel all the rubes into the same 3 block area so we can get on with actual life and #### everywhere else.

So booked the flight and hotel.  Get into LaGuardia at 6:29pm on Wednesday, fly out Sunday morning about 9am.  Need to get home since that day is our son's 16th birthday.

Staying at the Dumont NYC - seems to be very highly rated and got a good rate on the rate.

Will be booked mornings of Thursday and Friday for CE.  Looking to get Les Mis for Friday night, have The Tonight Show Thursday afternoon.  So a lot of open time to fill.  The obvious ones to get in, I assume, are Empire State Bldg, Ground Zero and Statue of Liberty?  I know there are tons of things like Central Park (plan on running there in the mornings from my hotel - is that a thing in NYC - going through the urban jungle to get there?) and doubt museums will fit into the schedule.  Open to many possibilities.

my co-workers good friend is a "performance artist"- former model who smears lipstick over her mouth and bare #### and walks around in "character". does this all over the place (like red carpet at places like cannes film festival) she's "performing" right now in Times Square. my co-worker decided to leave a little early today.
