Yep. Feels like Soho now with all the boutiques, restaurants and fancy hotels/condos. The weekends get pretty crazy….Pianos is still there. One of the few surviving bars. RIP Max Fish.Wow the LES is a different world over the last few years... I went out in the area Saturday night for the first time in a while, different than what I had remembered, pure chaos over there.
pianos is still there. arlene's grocery too and mercury lounge and I'm pretty sure abc no rio.PIANO'S still around? My cuz used to play there a lot way back (through mid 00s maybe?)
God its a beautoful day. If only we could post images... holding my afternoon calls overlooking a calm LI Sound, Jeep top off, clear view over to New Rochelle and Rye and even the towers in White Plains.
because the neighborhood needed another idiot hotel.Rooftop bar at Hotel Indigo and this place 205 on Chrystie. Entire area is chaos.
Terrible... That was it for me and my night. Basically a shoulder to shoulder overcrowded nightmare. Loud music, not able to move, #### that place, I don't understand how someone can consider that a good time.pianos is still there. arlene's grocery too and mercury lounge and I'm pretty sure abc no rio.
yeah- it's been an absolutely amazing couple of days. love seeing what outfits teh wimmens bring out for this.
because the neighborhood needed another idiot hotel.
how was 205? across the street from where I kick around with my kid, but I never think to got that "far" for a drink.
I just assumed it was always that way from late afternoon to evening and all weekend long. Crazy.went from a bday at the houdini museum for my 5yo near penn station up through times square on saturday afternoon to pick up #1 son at an acting workshop on 46th st. what a crap day for the kids to be inside- and absolutely insane how crowded the times square area was. shoulder to shoulder for blocks going up broadway- my nightmare.
yeah- no idea, really. I never go to times square.I just assumed it was always that way from late afternoon to evening and all weekend long. Crazy.
I feel like I need to keep checking in here, just because.![]()
Wolfgangs is a similar format - Lugers can be tough for a reservation, so that could be a good fallback - Strip House on 12th also fantastic, as is Del Frisco's (went last week, love that place) and Porter House in the Time Warner building. Can't miss at any of those.Absolutely.
Its still the best steak I've had in a consistent basis. IMO not at all over rated and worry every penny - though it's no more and at times less than comparable steakhouses. Just bring cash, no ccs accepted except house accounts.
yeah- no idea, really. I never go to times square.
and you absolutely should keep checking in, now that you're an official NYer.
Lugers is my personal fav, and by a good ways but DF or SH would be great options and I certainly can see why some would prefer either.Wolfgangs is a similar format - Lugers can be tough for a reservation, so that could be a good fallback - Strip House on 12th also fantastic, as is Del Frisco's (went last week, love that place) and Porter House in the Time Warner building. Plan for it to be hot and very humid at that time, so lessen the walking and increase the museum time. If you get lucky and there's a break in the heat, can always free up the itinerary for more outdoors time.holy ####!! my trip is booked!! i am so excited!! i've never been to nyc!
we'll be in nyc, 7/9-7/14. we are staying in east midtown. my inlaws will be there at the same time as us, so 3 kids. 10, 9, 7. and my daughter will turn 10 while we are there! pretty sweet bday present
any and all advice welcome!
I walked in today... and walked out. think I need a little direction here. it all looks and smells like the rest of the joints. plus, I don't really eat the stuff (hot and cold sandwiches, etc) that these places serve. is there something that's a go-to, can't-miss at this place?I walk by there every night on my way to the citibikes at grand central... unassuming looking place that looks like the three or four that are on every block around here. better than the rest of those?Have you guys tried Homefront Deli (on 41st between Madison and Park)? It's also a good, no frills deli. Strictly take-out, though.
can't hurt to start booking things (stat liberty, ESB or top o' the rock, broadway show, etc). that's a really busy time around the city for tourists.holy ####!! my trip is booked!! i am so excited!! i've never been to nyc!

Not really. I just mentioned it because it's the only no-frills deli near my office that I was aware of. I like it more than places like Metro Café and Essen and it's much better than the cafeteria in my building, although eating a pizza crust off the sidewalk is better than the cafeteria in my building. I haven't had the time to explore the area much just yet, but I am definitely going to try Park Italian deli and the place I heard that recently opened on 42nd. As far as Homefront, I sometimes get a bacon, egg and cheese in the morning and have had some of their hot specials for lunch, which are ok but nothing special.I walked in today... and walked out. think I need a little direction here. it all looks and smells like the rest of the joints. plus, I don't really eat the stuff (hot and cold sandwiches, etc) that these places serve. is there something that's a go-to, can't-miss at this place?
I get where you're coming from. Sometimes a generic deli is more than just a generic deli without necessarily having anything that wows you. There was one on 42nd between 6th and 7th, closer to 6th, south side of the street that fit the bill for me for a couple years. It had the normal make your own salad line, but they gave you an option of two proteins or doubled up, which made it much more filling than most places. They also gave you a small soup and their turkey chili was amazing. It was probably 50c more than a much smaller salad at the rest of the generic delis. Not really. Well, the two ends are the Javits Center on the north and the Whitney museum on the south. I would say it depends on what you want from it. We started at Javits because that is where I had my CE, but it was a great walk south to the end, where we got off and went to the Chelsea Market for lunch. It was great. But there are stairs all over the place. Is there a definitive starting/stopping place for the High Line? Or do you just get on it pretty much anywhere along the way?
come and go as you please. my favorite spot is right at the 10ave overpass, where there's stadium seating looking up 10th ave and some benches and trees on the other side looking down with a view of the statue of liberty. I think it's around 20th st.Is there a definitive starting/stopping place for the High Line? Or do you just get on it pretty much anywhere along the way?
No, but for tourists I definitely recommend they start on the north side and walk towards the Whitney. I actually like starting at the Javits Center since you get to see all the trains and all the construction is sort of interesting if you haven't seen high rises going up before, but that may be because my 4 year old loves trains. Is there a definitive starting/stopping place for the High Line? FOR THE LOVE OF GOD (not to mention your sons)... NO!!!!Have thought about switching hotels for that last night, and staying near LGA/Citifield
Very nice! I recently booked a hotel in Times Square (Hilton) for July 14th through July 19th. My wife and I will be taking our 12 year old daughter and 10 year old son.holy ####!! my trip is booked!! i am so excited!! i've never been to nyc!

the crown is already booked on the SoL, i'll look into the others right away. thanks for the heads up.can't hurt to start booking things (stat liberty, ESB or top o' the rock, broadway show, etc). that's a really busy time around the city for tourists.
is serendipity still open? seemed like a girls' bday kind of place. or [nohomer] american doll place-I bet they have bday stuff available if yours is into that malevolent satanist conspiracy against humanity kind of thing.
what kind of things are you going to want to do? any specific interests?
fwiw- re: airports... they're all fine. Newark is a little trickier in that nyc yellow cabs won't go there unless you pay their return fare. LGA is only for non-trans continental/atlantic flights (small runways) and is the closest to NYC proper ($30ish trip). JFK ... it's JFK.
LGA was a hole. I felt like I needed to lay down cover fire to use a urinal in the bathrooms. Newark was nicer, but further away. Our cab was $40 from LGA, $80 Newark. Don't think I would use public transportation on that one.the crown is already booked on the SoL, i'll look into the others right away. thanks for the heads up.
i refuse to set foot in an american girl store. her nana takes her there. f that noise.
we are going to hit the usual spots, central park, 911 memorial, esb, etc. we love to eat, i'd love to get some killer chinese food, or any other awesome food. we are down for anything.
we fly into newark, how difficult will it be, mid afternoon, to get to grand central station using public transportation? or should we just cab it? we leave out of lga

FWIW the crown and pedestal lines are the same to go up into that portion. The crown is just further up. I could see it being very possible to have a pedestal ticket and then just kind of ending up in the crown?i'm down for any ethnicity on the food. all asianed varieties especially. we'll do some pizza. maybe peter lugers. but we're open to anything.
i'm bummed about the SOL, unless i can grease the right guy, i'don't think it's happening
Not sure of the security from where the big ### staircase starts. It was not watched when we were there.exxxxceeeellllentFWIW the crown and pedestal lines are the same to go up into that portion. Statue of Liberty is in New Jersey. Ellis Island too.El Floppo said:if you can- try to get up the SOL. the inside might be my favorite NYC interior, pretty amazing combo of skin, main structure and interstitial structure. and then you're up in the crown for a few seconds- also incredible.
Hit up Ippudo for some of the nations best ramen. Original is east village / Astor and lots within walking distance the new one in midtown I've not been to.DA RAIDERS said:i'm down for any ethnicity on the food. all asianed varieties especially. we'll do some pizza. maybe peter lugers. but we're open to anything.

Not true even though they are over the provincial Jersey line in the water.Statue of Liberty is in New Jersey. Ellis Island too.
Agreed, they are in NY but always a lot of confusion on this one since they are on the Jersey side of the border but when the border was set up they were exceptions to the general line. Think the landed was actually given to the feds at some point as well. Not true even though they are over the provincial Jersey line in the water.
sure thing and you know what so is milwaukee f it im down everything is in jersey take that to the bank bromigoStatue of Liberty is in New Jersey. Ellis Island too.
coney islandwith 3 kids? hell
could be fun. it's been sanitized over the years... which I guess is good for the kids (no freakshows, etc). longish subway ride out there (hour+ each way)- but above ground most of the way.coney island with 3 kids? sounds like hell. thoughts?
Yes, we go the pass and in the 4 days we had it, we abused the heck out of it. We rode the subway 5-8 times a day going all over. It was fantastic. We used well above the amount spent in value. And probably got a good feel for a part of the NYC lifestyle because of it.should i get a 7 day subway pass? did you use the subway much mad cow? or did you walk everywhere?
Theres mini golf and the beach plus baseball... the trip there is the toughest part if you have kidscould be fun. it's been sanitized over the years... which I guess is good for the kids (no freakshows, etc). longish subway ride out there (hour+ each way)- but above ground most of the way.
ride tickets are steep and the rides are short. but nathans, aquarium (still sandy-damaged last I went out there) and boardwalk are all kinda fun once.
lol... or what sammy said.
